Fire authorities have said that nearly all ICE car fires are arson, followed by a small number after accidents. The rest are electrical faults or mechanical faults like split fuel lines in older cars. ICE cars can have some spectacular crashes and still don’t burst into flames. Cars can be almost demolished and still don’t burn. EV’s can just be sitting in the driveway and combust.

This is good for Toyota in that they were "late" in putting lithium batteries in their vehicles. Now, they're putting Ni-Mh back into some, probably for just this main reason (?). The Ni-Mh also is more temperature resistant to hot and cold and it doesn't explode. It's obviously less energy dense, but it's also a lot safer and a bit more robust in temperature swings. In our '13 Prius, we had zero problems with the Ni-Mh battery and it held up just fine. We weren't losing sleep because it was a little bit heavier and had a bit less electrical power. Great car.

If safety regulators have allowed dodgy batteries, then other safety measures the industry have included before EV's can be ignored (obviously) by the manufacturers, to improve sales profitability. I'm surprised we still get seatbelts and airbags. But making side windows out of laminated instead of toughened glass is actually proof they are probably trying to kill you. If you or your rescuers can't open electrically locked doors, the option to smash the side windows has been removed by having laminated windows you'll need an axe to get through in the event of an emergency.

Stop picking on the poor old Pinto. I drove and worked on these cars and the did not explode until someone hit them in the rear at a decent rate of speed. They never exploded on their own. 90% of Pintos went to the scrap heap when their timing belt failed at around 60,000 miles and the rest rusted away quietly. While I agree that the combined decisions of extending the gas tank into the rear bumper, making the gas tank the trunk floor in a hatchback and stamping the rear bumper out of thin sheet metal, first to extend the car's range during the gas crisis and then to lighten and cheapen the vehicle, were less than optimal, the vast majority of Pinto owners enjoyed their fuel efficient, and good handling little sporty cars until their timing belts broke or their feet went through the floor. Mostly... when you bought a Pinto, you could just look underneath and see the gas tank in the rear bumper and the timing belt was right out front of the engine, moreover, most other Fords had really bad rust issues at the time too. People who bought the Pinto knew or should have known that the car wasn't much safer than the VW beetle it was competing against. People knowingly sacrificed safety for economy and then got all bent out of shape (and incinerated) when things didn't work out their way. The defects with the Jeep batteries aren't something that most customers can see or understand. They think they are buying something sold as a safe car that explodes on it's own, that's way different to the Pinto or even a motorcycle that doesn't survive crashes well. If you drove more safely and did proper maintenance you could reduce the risk of dying in a Pinto, a Jeep EV will kill you even if you do everything right and drive safely.. I might add... that I also had a 1971 Ford Galaxy 500. The Gas tank was behind the rear seat and about 5 feet from the rear bumper. The car was rear ended by a heavy duty pickup truck and shortened by at least 2 feet. No one was hurt. Ford knew how to build a safe car, but it got half the fuel economy and cost twice as much as the Pinto at the time. People had the choice between safe and economical cars sitting on the new car lot side by side. No one was forced to choose poorly.

Then Ford went on to make great small cars, and now they've gotten rid of them 😠
@RJ-vb7ghАй бұрын
@@deanchur I'm not sure Ford ever got small cars right.... Maverick, Pinto, Granada, Escort, Tempo.... and then everything with the DCT and now wet belts. But yes there were a few small Fords that were a lot better than others. Unfortunately Ford always looked at small cars as cheap cars and really cut corners on them. They also liked to design them with shorter life spans. Ford literally had a policy to prevent their lower price cars lasting too long for second owners. Also... Ford has pretty much given up the budget car business, leaving it to Korea and soon to come... China.

When you see Jeep advertising the next model year and it's the fall of 2024, it feels like when you visit an old relative for the last time on their deathbed and there are wires for monitors and oxygen tubes and shit and the dying person starts talking about their plans for next summer.

It's theorized that the gas engine of a hybrid takes extra damage from the constant stop-start operation. It's not a theory for years Glider tow and parachute drop pilots know not to point the aircraft downhill too much as the sudden cooling cracks the head and block. The same effect will happen when the battery kicks in on a cool day with cold air hitting the hot engine on one side to restart later.

I’m an old fart. Just turned 64. As time creeps on, the more convinced I am to keep driving the least high tech, modern car I can justify . I have an Audi A6 Biturbo SLine Diesel. I bought used 2 years ago for $30,500. New , the previous (diligent) owner payed $130k in 2015. I have travelled 20,000km, replaced the water pump ($450) one standard service, and 2 new front tyres ($550ea). It is high tech for a diesel, but being a well sorted c7.5 model, not much tends to go wrong, but being an Audi, you have to be proactive on maintenance, if you don’t want any nasty surprises. The next model c8 has a complicated mild hybrid system, that if something goes wrong, which seems to happen a bit, is f-ing expensive. So when it is time to replace mine. I’m not going the mild or heavy hybrid rout. In fact I might even go more old school and basic. Call me an old analog dude 😂.

Here is a suggestion for you John. How about you engineer a discount code for car detailing? Surely there’s some bigger franchises out there that would happily give a discount on a promotion via your channel……..

Will never be an EV fan no matter the layout. Bought myself a Suzuki SV650 in March ok being a bike has its drawbacks but it costs me about $22 using 95RON fuel every 300km or so, it will never suffer from thermal runaway, it’s fun and easy to ride and cheap to own and as it has basis electrics there’s no Bluetooth tracking me so no government or corporations invading my privacy. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

It's brutal what designers have to do to accommodate some new requirements. Like everyone and his dog knows that Jeep ain't designed for electric car. All tooling for car is done. It's not economical to make new tools for few of them. So they just scrambled whatever is possible. It went out horrible I guess. When designers are designing new hybrid car they don't think it's the best idea to put hot battery, hot wires and hot coolant with all water flowing around under the seat... They probably had have done car and made whatever is possible.

Irregularly beat myself up for being a failure in life. I've only worked constantly for 30yrs as a heavy diesel mechanic and supported my family. Never considered myself smart enough to design and build this stuff. It's refreshing to see even the professionals and leaders of industry are also f¥€k¥ps!

Logic suggests all lithium batteries will fail eventually from separator failure just the same as the old lead acid batteries do! Except lead acid douse not catch fire as the cell shorts out and go's flat. Lithium battery can only go into thermal runaway when it shorts out.

On the positive side, if they make the batteries vent to the rear of the car and add an immediate ignition source, maybe it would provide a nice rocket assisted increase in the MPG rating!😂😂😂😂

When looking at a cross sample of equal age EV vs ICE, ev is slightly more likely to catch fire. However that's with average age of 3 years. I'm curious when the lithium batteries age and swelling starts pushing their compartments open, thus exposing themselves to salt and other goodies what will happen to the stats then. Also although the EV were slightly more likely to combust, (when looking at equal age) what's interesting is their mileage was around 1/9th that of the ICE equalivent at the time of fire. Also PHEV was the most likely to combust of all groups.

You never know when you might require a self contained source of heat😂 Would have been nice of them to put a floor in it, to keep the interior separated from the battery case.

Schrödinger's EV paradise ... you never know what state the battery packs are in any of the mobile vanity rooms about; except these don't care whether you observe them or not, they seem to prefer you not to observe them while 'changing' their 'mood' if we anthropomorphize the situation just a bit.

I think as these batteries age the chance of failure is going to increase expediently. The fire may not be as intense or sustained because of the degradation of the chemicals, but the deterioration will increase the likelihood of the battery just commiting chemical suicide! I agree with Jhon, when these cars reach ten plus years old, fires are going to be as common as ICE from electrical faults. I think a very big percentage of the battery's will catch fire just from age.
