I’ve watched your videos for a three years now. You’re like a member of the family. You have taught me a lot. I ended up buying a Mitsubishi triton glx because you had one. It’s the best car I’ve had and I’m very happy with it. Even got myself a few olights too which are good bits of gear. I’ve done a bit of research on you and you’re not some bloke on KZbin. You have a lot of experience and quals behind you. I don’t think people know your background. Thanks for the videos. I always let the ads play in your videos hopefully to support you.

Don’t worry about the wife mate, mine sent me out about ten years ago to buy a Commodore wagon but I came home with a ‘71 Ford Galaxie coupe with a seven litre motor. She wasn’t happy but by Christ I was! Still have both of them so get what you want - it’s worth the pain.

Advice I recently gave a friend who needed a new car in a hurry. First time car buyer too. 1. get 7 year finance with no early settlement fee from a respected credit union BEFORE you walk into the dealer. Know how much you can borrow. Why 7 years? If there is no early termination then there is no advantage in getting a time restriction on your loan. Get a long one, pay it off in 3 or 5 and if tragedy strikes, you lose your job whatever, you have a 2 year buffer and lower min repayments it's worth a small increase in interest rate and you don't need the insurance. 2. Don't make a decision on the showroom floor. Go home, work out exactly what you want, come back, give them a fair price between 5-10% off retail (in this market) and stick to it. 3. You don't need it. None of the extras are worth a cent unless you actually definitely, 100% are going to use them. So mats? 4. Don't fall for dealer demos. She got 8% off. So you don't need to be a shark to make this stuff work for you.

Hey John, my partner and I have been watching your videos for over 3 years now. We love your Aussie humour and the stylish production set that only Aussies can do :P. We have two young kids under 3's and two cars (a family friendly Forester and a 2016 M135i). Given the prices for second hand car, especially for the last few breeds of that little hatch, we are looking to find a more roomier but still a 'fun' car for me if it made good economic sense. Is it worthwhile buying a bigger car now - be it slightly used or brand new with all these supply issues in the next few months? Regardless, thank you for a thoroughly entertaining channel.

Great timing with this video John! We are in the throws of researching the 'next' vehicle and are watching the EV and hydrogen vehicle developments with great interest. You video on Hybrids vs Plug-in hybrids vs ICEs was our first experience of the mirror being put up to our false authorities on how we viewed them as a natural stepping stone to EVs. The list of don'ts is written down and will take pride of place in our research for the new vehicle. Thanks as always for keeping us informed.

Love the colourful descriptions of sales tactics. Reminds me of a book that I bought about 30 years ago about buying cars in Oz. I know that it’s dated but I wonder how much of it is still relevant today. Like the tactic of letting you take the car of your (wet) dreams home for the weekend. Or sucking you into buying something that you clearly cannot afford but the easy credit of the in-house finance provider making it happen. Or you dump another $120k onto the mortgage to get that Sahara.

Another tip is if you're buying a car for yourself by yourself, have somebody else test drive it too. A friend or relative. Not only does it allow you to bounce your thoughts off somebody else who's not trying to sell you the car, it also allows you to experience the car as a passenger.

Thanks John for the tips, i will look into the wholesale selling path as an option i can never do private sell to much Gumtree tyre kickers , and also instead of knocking at ‘we buy cars’ or ‘we pay top dollar for cars’ ‘cash for you wheels’ on the main street outside Chermside shopping centre. Or the other route might be auction house such as Pickles but that might be risqué. I got sort idea of the ball park selling price using Redbook and estimated km ranges i deduct $100 per 1000km over Recommend trade in price i might add $200 or more depending on wear and age for added aftermarket accessories such as having the added benefit Aftermarket Android auto/Car-play stereo and Tow bar fitting which differentiates my car to the redbook car estimation. Trading cars at the dealer is highway robbery and they cared less for the aftermarket accessories thats my experience.

I don't know about Australia; but in United States finance companies usually cannot charge extra for paying early. Gap Insurance is for people who didn't put any money down; as a result depreciation gets way ahead of their payments, and the loan is termed upside down. If you need gap insurance you cannot afford the car
@SurmaSampo
@SurmaSampo 2 жыл бұрын
Early loan termination is a legal option on loans in Australia and is standard on Hire Purchase agreements which are the worst type of loan. Gap insurance is used to cover the gap between the insurable value of the car and the loan amount (used to be common for people buyingtheir first car at full finance (cars lose a significant amount of value as soon as they leave the car yard). This type of insurance is less nessasary as many insurers offer old for new covber for the first few years on new cars. Gap insurance is only important if the car gets written off. The reality is that most people can't afford cars hence they have to borrow money to buy them.

Thanks again for highlighting the need to put the brakes on when going to the showroom. I am wondering if it is possible to test drive by hooking up a caravan, then going for say 3/4 hour drive in our hilly city to test drive vehicles of interest? I spend 5 months a year spending money interstate towing a caravan (yes that thing John) and am looking for a 4 door diesel 4x4 ute to replace my aging Triton (which has run faultlessly), fingers x'd. I did note that you rang the death nell for the Mitsi/Nissi mix for the replacement 2022 Triton in your August report. Is it best to look for something now or will the discussed changes take place with the new model? I had seen the top 10 ute reviews from others over the past years and one road test did include towing a van something similar to mine. However, I would like to think that I could do this as well as the test driver as I am going to hand over my $'s and own something that I feel safe and comfortable to drive. Surely there would be several of us vanners (ha ha), perhaps tradies that continually tow a bigger trailer may be interested in your reply?

I didn't know that gap insurance was still a thing for new cars. Any half decent comprehensive policy usually has a new-for-old replacement option (if not a standard feature) that'll cover the insured for at least a couple of years from new. Some will offer it for as long as 4 years from new. Either way, 100% agree that insurance is something that new car buyers should take seriously.

I'm surprised you didn't talk about being upsold on trims. If you don't need all of the gadgetry that will add $5-6K to a car, isn't it more prudent to haggle with the dealer to find a car to your specs than for them to say, "We only have the highest trim in stock?" (This actually happened to me when I was locating a new car for my grandmother, but I was insistent and the dealer did manage to locate a lower trim model without all the bells and whistles - you know, one with physical climate controls, and A KEY-).

Seems your consumer laws need an upgrade in Australia. Ist new car purchase in NZ went like this. 2015 Decided to buy new car. Had a good look around decided on make and model, waited until 2 days from end of month, made dealer ( salesperson) cash offer. Dealer said not enough, I revised my offer. Ok you win, what colour? Even before payment I was asked if I wanted to proceed with deal, no deposit was requested, then I was reminded of standard 24 hour cool down period if I changed my mind. Easy, no fish hooks. Though at present new cars are in short supply so the advantage is with the car dealers.

Used car prices have gone bananas a friend recently sold their car to a dealer who approached via the advertisement in gumtree for only $1000 below what they were asking they had been willing to accept $2500 below the final price. There appears to be desperation and fear in second hand dealer land that they just don’t have enough second hand stock to turnover to generate the commissions needed to buy a steady stream of leather jackets. A most pleasurable scenario as secondhand slimers are even a lower subspecies than new car dealers.

I took my trade in 2010 Nissan Navara to a major Toyota dealer for a quote on a new hybrid. The straight faced sales person offered me $15,000 if I signed now for a car to be possibly delivered in 6 to 10 months. This was a much better offer than I had earlier from a Hyundai dealer. As an after thought he said that of course at this time my trade would have to be re-appraised again remembering that contract had been signed & deposit paid already. I must have had STUPID stamped on my forehead if I was going to accept this deal. Why didn't he offer me $50,000 as the offer didn't mean diddly squat?

My advice is don’t tell anyone what you are thinking of buying or about to buy. You’re certain to cop the expert advice about how crap and everything that’s wrong with it. Also, don’t tell anyone how much you paid for it; they’ll know people who got it way cheaper. And don’t buy a car you won’t like or be happy with just because you’re pretty sure resale value is good and the front left shocks have a great reputation. Get what you want, work within your budget, be sensible in your decision and maintain it well.

Was looking for my first car 5 years ago. Looking at hatchbacks. Typical Eastern European models of choice - old Golfs, A3's a Civic here & there. Then, a collegue recommended to look at a Cee'd. - Look at a what?? The rest was history. Bought a 2008 Cee'd then, now on my second year with a 2012 one and even dad got a new Hyundai i30 estate, after I vetoed him buying a third Megane in a row.

Bloody hell! When I bought my two new cars in 1973 and 1976 (always bought 3 to five yo and kept them for 3 or 4 years since) it was an almost civilised and genteel process. Each salesman was OK with me shopping around to the other dealers here in Adelaide seeking the best change over price (when I didn’t manage to sell the old car privately for a better price). We did buy a new car in 2017, but not here in Australia.

I don't regret any new decisions I've made and while you dislike these cars I've enjoyed them all - Ford Terry diesel titanium - Brilliant family car, travelled all around Ausi with the kids, Wife meanwhile brought Discovery sport - OK car not loved by the family but a good car, and my favourite my FN mustang convertible - kids now grow'n love this car 45k in two years - daily driver and loving ❤ it ironically I could sell this right now for my purchase price - I'll never sell this car but I might buy a Tesla - just to piss u off and to offset the CO2 emissions from that dam V8 engine!

Many similar stories in the comments, but my 2 cents: Researched (everything you need to know is on the internet), rang and spoke to 3 dealerships before test driving (knew exactly what I wanted but let them go through the "sell" and nodded along). Asked about finance options (I was going to buy outright), asked about outright price, asked for a trade-in price on the old girl. Left saying "lots to think about". Rang other dealers to confirm the pricing was in the right ballpark. Went back 3 days later to "talk a bit more". Eventually the RRP was reduced by nearly $3k on a $34 000 "special deal" with first 5 years of servicing, tinting and foor mats thrown in. Note: offered $11 500 on the trade-in, eventualy they reluctantly bumped it to $12 500. I entertained them for a bit - sold it privately 2 weeks later to the first bloke who saw it for $23 800. Keep up the GREAT work John!!!

Often test driving for a new car is pointless… you are not testing the actual car unless you do it at pick up time and you determine that the deal is off if the car doesn’t drive as advertised.

My wife is aware of what her limitations are and her car knowledge is very limited. When it's time for a new car she tells me what features she would like and I get a car with those features and a 5 star safety rating. Wifey having the final say on which car to buy would be like me having the final say on what hygiene products she is to use.

There's only one critical mistake buying a new car in 2022 and that's - unless you absolutely have to buy a new vehicle for business purposes, or can write off the loss - buying an ICE vehicle. EVs will hit price parity by the following year, and beyond that ICE vehicle values will quickly diminish to zero, just as Nokia phones did when smart phones arrived.
