I recently tried an other online new car broker to assist in the purchase of a new Sportage GT line, they informed me that it was not worth their while as there was nothing in it for them as the car was so popular that the dealers were paying hard ball with the prices, I sent of an email with my requirements to Auto Expert and within 24 hours they came back with a price $2500 better than my local dealer had quoted me, not a huge discount but a discount non the less and I happily accepted. So I I would like to give John and Auto Expert a big thumbs up,cheers

John the last time I purchased a new vehicle was April 2019, I remember it very well, I went to 6 Sydney Ford dealers (yes I know you are not a Ford fan) and surprise surprise 4 were owned by the same parent holding company (I won't name then here but it's easy to find out since there are only 8 major Sydney Ford dealers) , all were saying the same thing, not budging on DA pricing which they claimed was $42,500, I was about to give in and take the 4th dealer option as they offered more on trade in (and extra $2,000) which would of seen me paying a change over price of around $27,500 however as I was driving towards that dealership I decided to try regional and on the 1st go got what I wanted which was $37,000 DA price together with $12,000 trade in price for a change over price of $25,000 which I think is great value for a Escape ST-Line. Then the fun began with the account manager pestering me to buy on finance, I said no, he tried 3 times I said no 3 times, so they moved me onto the insurance sales rep, a nice looking lady trying to get me to buy a white label insurance deal (which I think was Allianz insurance), again they tried 3 times I politely said not interested. I was moved onto the next rep this time it was the "after market" rep (re: what you term as the MINGMOLE) trying to get me to buy a front and rear dash cam, window tinting, ceramic paint coat / interior protection package, I said "is it free?" they said ok we are moving you onto the final team member which was the compliance manager advising me that the ACCC agreement that Ford had entered into agreement with and then I simply said you mean were forced to sign up to due to powershift fiasco and by then the Ford dealership finally got the message that I was there to buy and trade in not anything else and as such I paid a (get this) $150 deposit (yep that's all) to secure the car which was coming from a far Nth Qld Ford dealership, I asked how long it would take and the reply was 2 weeks, that said they did deliver the car in 8 days from so that was great for me. The most annoying thing in all that was that the 1st dealership I went to was the same one I would go to get my car standard service every year so they know the history however they were so rude and arrogant that put me off and the way they would not move on price yet the regional dealership without question accepted the offer I put forward. So yeah people out there do your research and never let the dealership push you around, remember you are there to buy not make friends, that means you can be as ruthless as you want (well within reason of course), if they pester you simple say "is it free? can I get a spare key for free, how many free services can the dealership provide as part of the deal to get my signature (I love that one it throws them off so hard) , remember you are in control not them.

Had the same issue when I was getting rid of my old Honda Civic. The dealer I purchased it new from, offered me a derisory value - literally below market value, despite my history servicing the car there, and potentially buying a new vehicle as well. Walked well away from that, and Honda all together

Add Ons at point of sale have arguably negligible value at resale time, particularly as a trade-in. As to politely declining the invisible paint protection I was offered when ordering my (still waiting) new CX-5. The cold statement was "No thanks". 4 add ons = 4 "No thanks".

In 2020 I purchased a new Toyota hilux using your tips from past programs. It took 7 dealers . My number one tip from you is the , bullshit o clock one. I Used bullshit by saying my wife needed something written down before anything was to happened. Then used that to wedge another dealer. Worked a treat. I got 10% off plus a few extras. Sold my car privately via gumtree, car dealer bought it. And I was in no hurry. Cheers

You Subaru Forester comment is enlightening. Based on an earlier video I chose to stick with my current car for 6 months to avoid paying overs, looks like 6 will become 12. Question: Are car wholesale prices contractually agreed with dealers for the life of a car's model ? In a supply constrained scenario, I can see, for example, Inchcape running a silent auction with dealers on incoming Subaru Foresters if they were allowed to.

the galvanising of cars was such a huge step forward. Obviously, for those in cold (salted road) climates, it only goes so far, but my 22 year old BMW is absolutely corrosion free underneath. Frankly, it's amazing. So long as spares are available, this car could literally last forever, at least in Australia.

Question, or perhaps two. Would I be wrong in thinking that the vehicle manufacturers are quite happy making the most of non-discounted vehicle sales and in that, do you think that this would perhaps aid as an incentive for said manufacturers to not rush back to pre-beer bug build numbers? Second question being, do you think that if the Chinese vehicle manufacturers were to ramp up, to pre-pandemic numbers and thus, making more new vehicles available, would this then prompt the rest of the worlds automobile manufacturers ton increase output? And yes, I am very much ignoring supply chain issues (whether rightly or wrongly).

Correct me if I’m wrong….if we used Methane to reduce iron ore, and it has to be possible, we would halve the CO2, CH4 would become one CO2 and 2 H2O, half the Oxygen going to Carbon and half to the Hydrogen. If Carbon (Coke) and Hydrogen can both do it, Methane must be able to?

If it’s any consolation, here in Blighty, things are much the same. Decided to keep my 2016 Citroen 7 seater diesel and now service it myself - dealers here increased their service prices by over 30% and then refused to supply me with oil and filter to do my own service. Now it costs me £45 for a basic service, rather than £200 and I use top quality oil. Interestingly my mpg is now regularly above 60mpg compared to 50mpg when it was dealer serviced. Sorry - haven’t checked what that is in kms!

Just bought a new Forester 2.5i-S in April and they said it would be roughly a 3 month wait. So fingers crossed for August. My brother was so mad at me for accepting a $500 discount as he is big on bargaining but I don’t think he understands the current climate. I’m surprised they offered anything. While we were there 5 other couples walked in and stated they want to buy a Forester. The things sell themselves. I preferred the look and feel of the Tucson but hopefully the reliability pays off with Subaru as it was our “boring but practical” choice. Re add ons we just did dash cams, window weather shields, and mats.

I'm a big fan of good rust proofing, here in Canada, where the salt is thicker than the asphalt. But not from the dealer! It's drastically overpriced, and of dubious quality. I've been the schmuck who works in the back part of the dealer, which customers generally don't see. The dealer add on stuff is cheap and thrown together quickly, then charged somewhere up around the stratosphere.

John just curious if you knew when Aussie-made cars started to be made with galvanised steel? I had a '98 EL Fairmont back in the day which was a nice enough car, but the sills had chronic rust issues - as did most of the E-series Fords from memory...

I have a 2000 model Holden Ute and there is no sign of rust. Ford may have been galvanising their cars but not effectively. I read that Holden changed their tank contents for the last year due to some utes were not getting done properly at the cost of over $300 grand. For Ford it may just come down to quality control and not necessarily when they started galvanising. Now I’m not say Holden were squeaky clean, just saying what maybe the reason the sills started to rust on your Ford.

I had an EF Falcon XR6 sedan (way back in 1994) for the period of time I owned it before it was stolen (around August 1999) there was no issues with paint or rust, there was issues with tyres no matter how many times I had wheel alignment/balance and rotation done the left front tyre on the inner side would always be first the go, my guess was Ford went too aggressive with negative camber and the larger size (I laugh since by todays standard they would be considered cheese cutters) tyres (from memory 215/65/16 - I upgraded to a larger factory size rim and tyre) as for the rear well when your young and have an LSD combined with (remember for back then) near V8 power levels with 5-speed manual you can figure out the rest. That said the AU series were way better then the EF/EL series.

No because they are not made in RHD from factory. They are converted to RHD by companies here in Australia which adds a lot to their purchase price. To buy one here the purchase price are over $100 grand and on top of that our fuel prices are dearer here as well. People who are towing heavy trailers will generally use Toyota Landcruiser wagons, utes or dual cabs. The Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux are popular too for towing and there are a few Dodge Rams getting about.

John, with your influence with Olight, perhaps you could suggest a product. A Olight LowLight, red or orange head band. No pulsing, varying outputs (but if you must, just high and low but separate to the on/off switch). Use case = Astronomy. just need a dull dark orange or red, doesn't kill the night vision of other observers but still lets you find that knob on the telescope (like, who not wants to fine that knob?) To be able to just turn light on with out blinding other people with night adjusted eyes, to find your way around the astronomy site. Currently I buy a cheap imported light from some sweatshop produced (or maybe robot produced) crap quality item and then tape red photographic red gel over the front of the light. Workable but so cheap and DIY looking. I have previously provided feedback to this idea but I'm afraid it's fallen on deaf ears (if such a thing is possible in an email) fingers crossed that they will at least listen to you, provide some form of feedback (like it sucks as not enough interest or some other response) cheers Greg (yes, real name)

I love (and not in the sexual enjoyment way) how the DP "Dealer Principle" appears at the exit door as you are being walked out by the sales consultant (because apparently you haven't remembered where you parked your car) having not signed to purchase a car. Then the attempt to violate your decision process with both single and and dual assaults.

love the throw away comment that cars come with a clearcoat, so ceramic coating isn't needed. I do agree that dealer applied ceramic is classic vapor salesman crap and good luck claiming for a warranty. As a detailer with 15yrs of experience I have seen some true horror stories of dealer prep on a new car where the so called ceramic coating has failed in months not years. But with proper prep and application a ceramic coat has its place. But the urban myths of not needing polished and it resists damage are pervasive. So back to clearcoat, so to say a BMW clearcoat is no different to a Subaru is laughable. what's really needed is proper careful cleaning taking off each layer of contaminants in the correct way, but most folk want that service in 10min and cost as little as possible.

proper ceramic coating by a 3rd party professional is a must, as is window tinting. Had it done on my 2013 Focus, and upon selling it (01/22), paintwork & interior were nearly flawless.

Indeed John USED CAR sales people are not budging on price, trying to get a nice hatchback for my niece (its down to a LZ Focus (proper torque converter with i4 turbo petrol or a MY20 i30 torque converter NA petrol) and basically dealership is not moving on price for either, the rational is that there are plenty of buyers ready to snap up these particular cars yet they have been at the dealership for at least 3 week going on 4 weeks now so to me that is not "snapping" anything, for me I can't see the business case for not doing a deal to get the cars of there lot from a turn over case. I know you are no fan of Ford and Ford reps are in kind no fan of yourself, however do you have any views about the new but late to the PHEV party Ford Escape St-Line PHEV? I am reading the same beliefs from people that the added cost (something like $15,000 more) is not worth it as it would like somewhere around 6 years to recoup the extra cost, very similar to the old LPG era were it cost extra for LGP and took anywhere up to 6 to 8 years to get the recoup cost of ownership. Just on LPG, its made here taxed art a lower rate yet now cost $1.10 (Sydney average) , last time I checked we don't get any LPG from overseas and distribution costs should be effective cheaper with the 22.5c reduction in excise yet LPG continues to go up in price.

@@tomnewham1269 - 6 months ago LPG was average price around $0.85c, today (as of 4pm local time 24 May 2022) the NSW Fuel app is showing an average Sydney metro price of $1.15c, I am no mathematician so in terms of raw numbers that is an increase of $.030c, now I do understand that many have given up on LPG (basically there most of the taxi fleet has switched from Falcon (a some Commodore in regional areas) to Camry Hybrid and there are less retail outlets providing LPG option but to jump 30c in 6 months while for at least what the last 2 months where excise has been cut in half by 22.5c that tells me something is wrong there on LPG pricing again for the Sydney metro market, I hear horror stories out in WA where LPG is now something like $1.60 a litre, someone somewhere needs to investigate why this is the case and not use "cost of living / inflation" as the main excuses as to why LPG which again is all AUSTRALIAN made and distributed has jumped so high.
@tomnewham1269

@@351tgv The LPG price rises when the petrol price rises because the demand for LPG will increase because it is cheaper. We export LPG so the LPG price we pay is based on the global price. We are part of the global economy and so our commodity prices reflect the global prices.

I got shafted by Fiat Werribee. Let’s just say I know you will laugh but the Dealer Principal threatened me after I had picked up my new 500, and the trade in Land Rover I left there wasn’t up to his specs. I had told the sales man that I would be returning the vehicle to original rims and worn out tyres at the time of getting a price for trade in. (Was financed so was down sizing to save $ and buy house) he claimed I was fraudulent and he was going to police etc. I asked why he treated a new customer like this when his salesman was clearly not telling the boss all the details I shared and they had the vehicle in their possession for 1.5 hours during change over to review it. It was a short lived customer relationship. Then 8 years later I got money back cause of a class action where by their “added insurance protection” was sold fraudulently. So I got some cash back. Fiat was fun and I did 180,000kms in it. Major fault was the wiring in the passenger foot well which disabled the transmission. That was fun trying to diagnose. The Richmond dealer Zagame destroyed my dash on a warranty claim but I only realised the glue a month later after it suffered in the sunshine and went cloudy. I would have an electric Fiat 500 in a heartbeat. I just never want to deal with a dealer again. Sucker for it I know, but I now own a Toyota Camry 2004 and do all the servicing etc, racked up 60,000kms in 2.5 years with it. Using it for all my high kms and want a fun car as my spare… just can’t justify current pricing.

One of the best money-saving tips when buying a new car is to deal directly with the manager. Then there's is no salesman commission to factor into "dealer delivery". Also, no BS good cop / bad cop routine between salesman and manager (when you know they're talking about football and Friday drinks) to endure. This can also bypass the Xs, although I do enjoy saying "no" repeatedly and watching the side show. Rust protection!!?? FMD. Do these cars rust? Well, I've changed my mind ... I don't want one then.
