As soon as Toyota announced its intention to give the GR Supra a manual gearbox, most car fans probably thought they knew the recipe. The Supra’s BMW-sourced ‘B58’ in-line six-cylinder engine has been hooked up to a manual option in plenty of cars before, including the previous-generation M240i and 340i.
So, surely a manual Supra involves taking the gearbox used in those cars and dropping it in? Not quite, it turns out. What Toyota actually did was partly develop a new gearbox, believing it to be the best way to get the right level of shift quality. The development team “went shopping” at German firm ZF, building a transmission related to BMW’s, but with many bespoke components.
The work didn’t stop there. To accommodate the shifter, the top part of the centre console had to be widened considerably, with the infotainment controls, drive mode buttons and the electronic handbrake all moved to new positions. The shift knob itself isn’t an off-the-shelf part either, and Toyota went through multiple designs with different weights, settling on the heaviest of them all - a 200g part - in its quest for the perfect shift. As Nicola Hume finds out, the manual gearbox - plus numerous chassis tweaks - make this the best Supra yet.

Great review. I LOVE this car in a manual. Dare I say it, there comes a point where fast is too fast. Driving feel and feeling connected with your car is king and this is what you get with a well-designed manual. Toyota made it happen and now it is time for us enthusiasts to fork over the money and buy this thing. You can't row your own gears in an EV. Well done Toyota. Well done.

Confirmed on mine - '3 MT - Not sluggish IMO, but a bit notchy and hard to get a smoothe transition. Works better changing 1st to 2nd at 3k rpm

Since 2021, MK5 Supra has 387 HP not 335. But some say that's not the real numbers, and that's actually the wheel horsepower, so it might even has more brake horsepower. Some dyno'd it and actually has around 400 HP.

I watched this because Rory Reid is not on the show, I really don’t enjoy his presentation. Unfortunately Toyota always did plan a manual for this car, it was scheduled for its swan song to help late sales in the product life cycle. Not sure if the UK gets a de tuned spec, I doubt it, but she short changed the Supra by about 50 BHP. The old N54 1m engine had 335bhp. If you want a better assessment of this car watch Savage Geese.

In Europe this car is listed on all Toyota websites as producing 340PS (335hp). She is quoting the correct figure for her home market. In the US and other markets the power increased to circa 380 for the second MY.

Yes, yes, yes, it's worth the wait, though pity it's so expensive!! While we can't currently buy the manual in Ireland, which would be a tiny bit cheaper, it's still a very dear model - €95,000 for the base spec with the silly automatic and nearly €100,000 for the higher spec! We also can't buy the GR86 here yet, but if we could it'd be at least €50,000, as the GR Yaris starts at about €53,000 and the GT86 started at €45,000! Edit - Seems the GR Yaris has gone up and it now starts at €56,000! 😯😂 Why can't we have nice things?! 😯😂😀🤘

In America a GR Supra starts at about $43000 and a GR86 starts at $28000. A V8 Camaro starts at about $38000. Irelands over priced culture is all down to the welfare state management of the economy that is has an extremely high taxation approach.

@@mattyoz0 V8 engines are more common in Australian car culture than they are in british car culture hence why you will find more power engines in Australian cars. The only V8 engines you will find in British cars are in the $200,000 range of cars.

Amazing what competition does for a vehicle. Took the new Z to make Toyota finally give us the manual we were asking for. Sadly you still can't drive the Supra with the windows down. Maybe in another couple of years Toyota will fix it

It is silly that Toyota hasn't fixed it, but luckily it's a simple fix with a $10-$100 add-on to the mirrors. I got the AWE version and drove all weekend on a track with the windows down the entire time. Not one ounce of wind buffeting. But it is crazy that this fix doesn't come from the factory, even after quite a few years now for sure.

More like a Z4M+ Indeed it's based on the Z4 and uses many BMW parts, but Toyota has done a significant amount to make the car unique and very good on their own... Similarly to the GR86, when compared to its' sister car the Subaru BRZ, it has significant suspension and ECU changes and improvements Overall it's a great thing that all such cars exist at all in this day and age! 😯😀🤘

Blind spot on the dash, and no hand brake. The ducktail spoiler is lame. Other than that I like it, but I would rather buy a Cayman for the price and turbo the Cayman. The screen sticking up from the dash is hidious on the Supra and is a blind spot for short people. I might buy a Lotus Emira and turn more heads than a Supra.

Sorry, but I just can't stand the way she only ever puts two hands on the wheel so that she can take one off again to let the wheel slip through it. Awful, She'd fail a driving test immediately. How can she expect us to believe she can even control a manual performance car, let alone talk about it authoritatively. As for any meaningful insights, I didn't spot any, simply endless tired cliché after tired cliché. Shame really, Supra dooper. No.
