I totally agree and just posted a comment about that a couple mins ago. I found the dual wheel on the transit probably helped it in the corners, by producing more over steer, rather than under steer. That is just my opinion tho, and not sure how others feel on this comparison?

This test is stupid and unfair. The vans should have the most similar layouts possible. The reason why the Transit handled better is because it had a dual wheel rear axle and the Sprinter didn't. For almost a year, I was set to buy a Sprinter. Compared, test drove, watch all the youtube vids, read as much as I could.. then, I spoke to an old family friend who is a certified Mercedes mechanic for as long as I have been alive, and drives Mercs. He said the Sprinter is the only Merc he won't endorse. I was stunned. He gave his reasons, and I asked which van to go with, and he said Transit. I would never guess him to recommend Ford ever. Then said the Transit is outselling Sprinter in Europe. I got my Med/Med Transit Van in June. I love the pick up on it, and it was a blast to drive in the Colorado Mountains back in August. I hung a hammock in it. :)

Interesting. I used to drive cabs in Brisbane, Australia. I did at one time drive Maxi Taxis, yes, the vomit comet. My boss had a Sprinter, and a Transit. Two things to say. (1) With the options we had, the Sprinter handled well, not quite sportscar, but way closer than you'd think. The Transit thought it was a Greyhound Bus. Now that said, in pouring rain and when grip got very, VERY bad, the transit got better, but on anything like a normal dry road, the Sprinter KILLED it. (2) Both these beasts come in a bewildering array of options. Doing a normal test of a car would be easy. Comparing two cars would be fairly easy. Comparing two cars that come in many different varieties, get's harder. In a case like this, all you can do is state very clearly what the options are on the one(s) you have, and compare them. I did always wish the Sprinter I had, had a lot more power, because it was quite fun to drive. You just had to get used to the size of it. I had a long running fantasy I used to giggle over, of hiding a twin turbo V8 under one....

Work for FedEx here and drive both the ford transit and Mercedes sprinter utilizing both of their gear shifters and both have dual clutch transmissions Ford transit does perform better imo, corners better, more dynamic, responsive, powerful, and rigid. Sprinters on the other hand have softer independent suspension, so they do flow through corners but bounce like crazy making it difficult to maintain traction for both tires. I’ve only driven diesel sprinters so there’s less power but when the turbo kicks in it’s fun af and fuel efficiency is much better. Tbh I fun sprinters more fun to drive, it requires more finesse with throttle control to fling the rear into a corner but also note that they are longer and come with much larger wheels. Also, they require a lot of maintenance that FedEx contractors don’t usually set time or money into. In summary, performance winner is transit but imo sprinters are more fun. Glad this video is out there to put my opinion out there considering I spent lots of time comparing the two vehicles

Having owned both Sprinter and Transit in different trims and year models, i can say this. The older Transits where built simple and hard as tanks, until the TDCI engines came in later mk6 models, Then the problems started, injectors, fuel pump, sensors, wiring gremlins and so on. The funny thing here in Norway you can only have the 2.2 155hp tdci engine as the strongest option and not the 3.2! There is no automatic option ether, and no Xenon lights. Low year and mileage warranty. The pro is that they are better for longer drives and rust less then Sprinters. Mostly cheaper parts to. The Mercedes sprinter are simply stronger, and you can have them i all configurations of engine & gearboxes. They used to be a bit harsh to ride, like the T1N 95-06. But the newer are a huge step up. Sadly you can not opt for differential lock any longer (helps a lot on crappy gravel roads). And the fucking traction control can not be turned of in newer models, getting unstuck in snow some times it fights you! The bad is they cost way more to buy in the first place, and the parts are more expensive, Aaaand they still rust like faster then naked sheets of steel.

I've seen many "comparison reviews" between the Sprinter and Transit here in the states on various review sites. The testers always give the Transit the 3.2L diesel and the Mercedes the less powerful 2.1L diesel instead of the optional 3.0L. And as seen in this review, the Sprinter gets the less powerful motor, and single wheel instead of dual wheel. Not too fair. Wheel bases are hard to "equalize" as the longest for the Ford is 148 inches compared to 170 in the Sprinter.

I'm not convinced, given the difference in costs that this was a very equal test. A comparison using mechanically similar specs would perhaps have been more objective. I would have preferred for them to have had the same axle setup, length, if possible similar payload capacity and equalish power to get a better idea. What about a run round a track with a 500 to 750kg payload just because we rarely run empty... I prefer the Ford Transit really - put it this way, at my former school, Fitzwaryn in Wantage, Oxfordshire I was at from around 1997 to Friday 17th July 2009, the X-reg Ford Transit we had (the early 2000's type model) never once broke down (at least when I was in it) 🙂! It was better (and liked more by most or all members of staff) than the 54-reg blue LDV. At Abingdon College (was there from Monday 14th September 2009 to Friday 6th July 2012) the best minibus I think was the 17-seat 59-reg Ford Transit. That and the 59-reg Nissan Qashqai (college car it was) we took down to Dorset on a 4-night residential trip. The Ford Transit was the best in passenger comfort I reckon 👍. And when I was at my former school to watch an afternoon nativity / christmas day, I was told (after I asked) that green minibus (the X-reg) is still going. It gets serviced regularly. I bet other models wouldn't have lasted almost 19 years. I bet it will still going now and make it to 20 years old. I can see it lasting at least 5 more years!

The low payload rating is due to European laws on goods vehicles and driving license classes, which go by the gross weight of the van. On a normal car license in Europe you're only allowed to drive up to 3.5 tons, any more you need a LGV license. Also anything over 3.5t used for commercial purposes needs a tachograph and all the regulations that go with those. As I understand it on a normal US car license you can drive anything up to 26k lbs (12.5 ton). Some US pickup trucks would be classed as LGV's here in Europe due to a

The Ford Transit has 4 wheels on the rear axle while the Mercedes Sprinter only has 2 wheels.... does that impact the performance testing between these two vans?

I miss the old ford econoline 350. 6.4 ltr diesel 360 hp and 650 ft pounds of tqe or to our aussie friends 881 nm tqe. You stomp the peddle on the right and that van would light um up. Not to mention it hauled 18000 pounds. God bless detroit for making that monster.

Guys go back and watch this again, his body language, facial grin etc was so different in the Transit before he had even started. Clearly a Ford man. He kept mentioning Ford cars this Ford cars that. Biased isn't the word. No mention of what a lovely engine the Merc has compared to the unrefined Ford. Test both vehicles after a quarter of a millions miles of work. I know which one I would want.

The transit is a dead copy of a Sprinter. And if Ford thinks it can compete with Mercedes -- which it can't. And this guy was deadlocked on the Ford before he began the so-called test.

Not a Ford fan, or a Nercedes hater, but all Sprinter is full of rust after a few years. The previous model of Sprinter you see on the streets is already full of rust. All of them. The newer Sprinters are nothing like the old ones that still move tons of goods each day.
@MrTewe748 жыл бұрын
+A анонимный One reason for this is that the Sprinter still runs when the other vans have gone to recycling

Other way round, actually - Ford invented the panel van with the Transit in the 1960s and all the rest followed. "Transit" actually means "van" in many countries now.

Too soon to say for the transit vans since they are new to the states, but I can say the sprinter vans rust out in just a couple short years.

Apparently Mercedes dips the lower 1/3 of the body in wax. Options are one coat, 5 coats, or 7 coats of paint .

Here's a "fun" idea, or maybe just nerdy. Load them up to their respective maximums, put them around the course for a couple of laps, then compare their speed:payload ratios... which one does more kilos per minute?

I own the 2016 Mercedes, not to race around a track, but for it's superior craftsmanship, resale value and it's 28 MPG. I spent weeks comparing sprinter vans and in my opinion and the opinions of most mechanics, the Mercedes Sprinter wins overall.

For those saying that dually wheels are better than single wheels when being stable at taking corners, that is not so. Also the longer wheel base over the shorter wheel base on the corners, the shorter wheel base is more likely to rollover in the corners. The Mercedes Benz van got both advantages over the transit and yet it lost to the transit. In 2018, the transit is the best tall van product in both the European and USA market. When it comes to diesel engines versus gas engines, the 3.5 Lt twin turbo with air to air engine cooler is it. It comes in two versions when it comes to horse power 385 HP with a 6 speed transmission and 525hp with a 10 speed transmission (my favorite) I prefer the
