Thomas, I've been speaking English as pretty much my only language for 53+ years and yet I still wish that I spoke it as well as you. Another great review. I owned a series II Touareg with air suspension and high/low range transmission, it was a remarkably capable off road vehicle out of the box. This looks a little soft in comparison. Nice tech anyway.

Great video, thank you! I’m in the US and I agree with VW’s decision not to bring the Touareg here. The Touareg does not have a cult following like the Land Cruiser, the 4Runner, the Wrangler, or LR in the off road market. Without the dedicated off roaders, the Touareg would be compromising sales of the Atlas, the Q5, Q7 and upcoming Q8. Unfortunately there isn’t a business model for it here but I’m happy it exists and appreciate the review.

I'm sure VW would like the public to believe that the cost of crash testing in the US was behind the decision not to export the new Touareg to North America. But that explanation doesn't ring true. In fact neither of the earlier generations of the Touareg sold well in the US and there is every reason to believe that the third generation would have done just as badly. The US replacement for the Touareg, the Atlas, on the other hand has significantly outsold the earlier generations of the Touareg. I've already seen more Atlases here in the Seattle area than I saw in a decade of the Touareg. It's a lesson VW should have learned with the ill-fated Phaeton years ago. They did learn it with the Passat. There's little doubt that the European Passat is superior to the US version but there is likewise no doubt that the larger, lower priced American version increased sales of the Passat several fold here. The bottom line is that the brand perception of VW in the US differs greatly from that in Europe. Though the Touareg is priced as a premium or even a luxury SUV, the American market simply does not see VW as a luxury brand. For example, Europeans happily pay the equivalent of up to $20,000 more for a GTI than Americans. In the US, a $50,000 GTI is simply not a viable offering. Put an Audi badge on the Touareg in the US and it might be a different story. It may be a bitter pill to swallow for VW fans in the US (like me), but Americans' priorities (including in SUV's) and brand perceptions constrain what VW is able to market successfully here.
@autogefuehl6 жыл бұрын
Yeah as I said, they didnt expect enough sales so that the costs for homologation would have paid off. I still think it would be important for their lineup in the US.
@stephenhendricks1036 жыл бұрын
I certainly would have loved it. My wife and I were shopping for a crossover earlier this year and ended up getting a Kia Sorento rather than a VW Atlas. Apart from the price difference for an equivalent trim, my wife found the Atlas simply too large. Apparently that's a plus for many Americans. Not for us. As I said, though, there seems to be much stronger price resistance for VW products in the US than in Europe. I suspect that slapping an Audi badge on the Touareg would make a big difference here. Unfortunately, it might well cannibalize Audi SUV sales.
@autogefuehl6 жыл бұрын
yes indeed that was my 2nd main point, there is difference conception of VW brand in the different countries. In the US, people obviously wouldnt spend so much money on VW like they do in Europe

Hi Thomas, Do you find new VW cars to be closer in terms of class to BMW Audi and Mercedes? I mean has the VW cars become more luxurious than before? If your answer is yes, do you think this is good thing, like are their cars good in terms of luxury and good for the already established name of VW? Can this Toureg compare with GLE and X3 or X5?
@Johnyjohny-os9cj6 жыл бұрын
Andro Dimitrov its definetely good thing vw is big company they have wide range of models for everyones wallet,i think that ve touareg can compete to some luxurious brands
@sic22l6 жыл бұрын
Not really. Touareg is the most expensive VW to it got some of the best echnologies VAG Group has to offer but in the same car you'll find much more cheap plastics than in the premium competition. As for other models I'd say VW did a step back, T-Roc is not luxurious whatsoever, it has disgustingly cheap interior.

@andrw89466 жыл бұрын
But isn't that opposite of what Volkswagen really translates from German. I mean since when VW is a luxury brand, instead of people's car. Does this mean that luxury is not so expensive anymore or the middle people class in Germany has become richer? Or maybe VW just wants to be a more premium brand, since they have Skoda and Seat? I wonder which answer is the correct one.

Overall styling reminds me of a mk7 jetta SUV. I really dig it and I agree that it’s a huge missed opportunity for VW not to bring this to the states. The Atlas doesn’t look anything near to this quality, Atlas is purely built to be a cost-cutter and I would never buy one. I actually prefer the new Tiguan hands down and I’m glad that refresh finally made it here.

Great car and great review! Touareg did not sell well in the States probably due to rounded body design and a price that pushed into a BMW/MB territory. Americans don't pay attention to interior quality much but love aggressive and tough off road look. I had a chance to drive a new Tacoma 4x4 and the interior is just horrible with poorly fitted plasticks, hard plastic everywhere, it felt like a basic utility truck but was priced at $40k.

I was wondering if the dieselgate scandal is the reason why VW is not considering bringing Touareg to The US. Further, VW has faced maximum penalty in the United States as compared to anywhere around the world. Perhaps, this might be the reason why VW is playing safe and going slow in The US market. It’s just my speculation. Nevertheless, I’m from India and VW is quite popular here, especially the Polo (the only popular and practical car VW has to offer for Indian market). Its very disappointing that VW didn’t introduce any of the newer models that it offered in other market for as long as year ago. It’s about time that VW should revise its entire range for Indian market (incl. Polo). Touareg is one eagerly awaited SUV that was long gone from Indian market. With competition getting steamed up with Q7, X5, XC90 etc, VW should seriously consider bringing Touareg to India as soon as possible to get an upper hand. They’ve already earned bad rep with dieselgate and this is their, perhaps, last but golden chance to earn people’s trust in the company.

VW Touareg was already too expensive for its class, and fact that we hardly have any options that the EURO get, such as Air suspension, 2 speed transfer case, sparse engine choice, and its market target was too much (ie starting family) and not very practical for larger families. The Atlas was born to replace the VW touareg , make it 20k cheaper, make it larger, make it very praticle and slap a very good long warranty and there you have it,a breadwinner suv, and the atlas just sells like hot cakes. I see more Atlas than any other models ie golf, passat, tiguan, ect

Not sure if I would say that VW has a premium image in Europe. Sure - they have some expensive cars. At least here in Sweden we have this issue about VW beeing a discount Audi - and not in a bad way really. Why buy an A4 when you can get a Passat? Why pay for a Passat when you can get a Superb? Of course there are differences that might justify the price premiums - but there is no real difference in the build quality. Sometimes you get the same switchgear, stearingwheel etc. I think it's a bit of a problem of VAGs parts bin philosphy. All brands get kind of bland.
