Note that Toyota later confirmed that the net / usable capacity is not 71 kWh but 64 kWh; that means that our two test results of 25 kWh / 100 km or 2,5 miles / kWh (270 km / 170 miles) and 22 kWh/100 km or 2,8 miles / kWh (320 km 200 miles) would mean even reduced range to 260 km / 160 miles in the 1st test and 290 km / 180 miles in the 2nd test. Still all results that are comparable and you can calculate with a winter range for less than 300 km and less than 200 miles. Our summer time expectation is 400 km / 250 miles, updates to follow, e.g. also with the test of the brother Lexus RZ 450e.
@john1701a Жыл бұрын
When details of 4X were revealed last spring, that 64 kWh value was often noted as capacity. That was indeed the usable amount. It was unfortunate when many switched to gross without stating they were doing so. Confusing matters more is how the various estimate systems do such a poor job of informing people what all the different numbers mean and how much they can be influenced by driving conditions. Oh well.

Drove it 1000mi through California on thanksgiving weekend and in 50-66F temps I was able to achieve 3.2mi/kwh over the course of 191mi which would have made for a theoretical range of 211mi with the nominal capacity of 66kwh. 70-73mph on HWY 99. It definitely gets better in warm weather. Charging at 60F on the Elk Grove EA peaked at 57kw. Fastest I've seen my CATL battery car charge is 87kw. I like it over all.

But it drove really nice, acceleration was decent (nothing like the model Y though), and comfort on ride was superior. I actually really like the inside and the exterior, more than the model Y. But now, it's basically the same price and just doesn't measure up. It has better ground clearance that MY, but you can add 2 in spaces for over 8 inches of ground clearance. Just not quite there yet

Woke up this morning to 32” of new snow overnight (northern Ontario), I have the Subaru version, got it on the road before the plow. I can only put the handling down to the actual weight of the vehicle as it handled the snow better than my Outback. No slippage at all at 100Km/h, my Outback would be being pushed around a little at that speed and depth of snow, especially in heavy snow like it is.

That was a good review. Thank you The car is a lot more compelling than I thought it would be. Good to know they fixed the "wheels falling off" issue.
Ebil24 in Norway could only get the bz4X battery to take 60kWh, so I don’t believe Toyota’s numbers on net capacity. They also only got 307km range on their test, which for a car with a 74kWh battery is hopeless. It also charges to 100% at snail’s pace
@autogefuehl Жыл бұрын
did two range tests, check timecodes. Recharging is possible 150 kW when battery is at 20 degrees, even in winter. You just have to drive it that warm that it is at about 20 degrees Celsius. If it is colder, it will indeed just charge some 45 kW or smth. I agree that the winter range is not sufficient as I concluded
@Jeddin Жыл бұрын
@@autogefuehl your range test looked like it only calculated consumption and then extrapolated range based on stated net capacity. But there is doubt about the net capacity of the battery as they could only consume and charge back 60 kWh not 74

After watching EV reviews including yours I picked one up! I tortured it in the first week going from snow (in June!) in the BC mountains now to 26c back in Surrey this week. Mileage is interesting, I lost quite a bit driving on the steep grades in the mountains here, and having big bear passengers cut back the range quite a bit too, so there was a lot of charging on this road trip. My range testing on the FWD (LE in Canada) was very similar at +8 C mostly highway driving, I got about 265km of range. It's supposed to have better range than the AWD. The defrost was necessary to run every 20 mins or so, and the range dropped much more than I expected with the 'efficient' heat pump. No additional cabin heat was added. The estimated time to charge on L3 is also totally inaccurate. Although it changed at up to 100kW at 8 C (FWD) once at 80% it dropped to 8kW but still said 30mins to full, then 25 mins later, 25 mins to full....hhhmmmm.

Yeah honestly I bought one and the downside is if you don't have a home charging station. It's limited to your daily commute. The price is a little high compared to other ev's that have a 300+ range. Toyota needs to bring about an update to the range of the vehicle, I hope so

@@alane3985if you were to get any EV at all, why would you not set up a charging station at home?

@Ricky Gill I was implying the fact that the miles outweighs having to charge it. Generally I can get about 200 miles without having the a/c or heater on. Now realistically i habe to use the a/c so that lowers it to 179 miles.I would like to be able to go to work where there's no charge station get lunch drive to pick up my wife and still have a few extra miles without having to be at 20 miles left. There's no room for those extra emergency tasks without having to charge immediately. Now if you look at it long term, battery efficiency will lower I don't know about how much but it's an inconvenience. Where you could get a 300+ ev cheaper price and not have to worry about charging immediately. There should be legal actions where a minimum of 300 miles has to be met to sell evs.

The BZ4X is a poor Toyota attempt at an electric vehicle. Having a heat pump is fine but this vehicle also has a resistive heater element which is why the range drops so much when you activate the cabin heater or the car calls for battery heating. The overall efficiency is very disappointing. It has some nice features but its not my choice for an EV.
@autogefuehl Жыл бұрын
Agree! Other EVs also have resistive heaters although having heat pumps, so why would this one here still drop so significantly?

@@autogefuehl so that means that you've tested the 6.6 as well. I have a BZ4X and I can fully agree with your findings regarding winter range and winter charging speed. I was surprised of the low(er, than expected) range, to be honest. I, too, am very interested in how the car will behave in the warm season. Otherwise, I'm very happy with the car, I really have no complaints regarding ride quality, features, offroad performance etc.

You wanted to be precise on energy consumption and battery range to dissipate rumors and that's your usual exhaustive precision we appreciate. These numbers are not very impressive and a little under par considering other propositions. Toyota want extreme longevity for batteries with means other manufacturer with better numbers don't care ? We will see... What is strangely deceiving is the lack of a route planner to charge (more often...) this battery. I think for the moment the best offer is a pure hybrid, soon with quick charge solid state battery (2025 ?) that will be used during 70% of driving time. BTW I'am proud owner of a 2002 Prius with a perfectly healthy hybrid battery...

Also bear in mind the battery warranty stipulates in the fine print the car has to be serviced at a Toyota service centre for the entire 10 years or the battery warranty is void, other manufacturers don't require this for their warranty, Toyota is currently under investigation for lying to customers in Norway.

I've been to the Toyota dealer for a regular service a month ago. And they have said that this electric model has been stopped from orders. You can not order it anymore, at least in Bulgaria. And that Peugeot style steering/instrument cluster design is just not for me. A steering wheel that low in order for me to see clearly the instruments is like sitting in a child's car toy with pedals.

1 electric vehicle uses 93 hybrid vehicles worth of battery and 5 plug-in hybrids. So you make one BEV and you lose 93 hybrids. The latter will have a far greater impact on carbon emissions reduction. Hybrid is still a 100% the way to go. $14 for 40 mins of charging cost almost as much as a combustion engine. Not to mention the convenience of gas stations and the ridiculously long range of a Hybrid. I get 550 miles range on my 2022 RAV4 XSE and it's an AWD and I love the way it drives. HEV's make no sense at this point, may be they will in 20 years.

Thanks for the interesting review, its Food to have your opinion on this car. Would have appreciated a more complete comment regarding charging speed in winter conditions. Because this looks like another „coldgate“ (as it was with Hyundai Ioniq 5). So for me this is a bad electric car, which is very unfortunate for e-mobility as a whole. Its completely unnecessary, as there exist proper solutions to this problem: active battery heating. It‘s not about the warranty, its about Toyota saving parts, development and money.

The exterior is growing on me in terms of the wheel arches,, but I really don't like the steering pod. Maybe better in person? Overall, I'm surprised Toyota doesn't have a big advantage in motor tech. No V2G? Maybe I missed that. Other than the brand name, I see no reason to consider this. Seems to be inferior to Tesla Model Y and even Hyundai Ioniq 5 in virtually every regard for the same money (or more if you spec it equivalently)
@benjaminsmith2287 Жыл бұрын
Is it in terms of body solidity and ride quality to a Y? the Hyundai is a nice car. The Y isn't that great IMO. Not in terms of how it is as a car. But it is a great EV. That's Tesla's specialty.
@patmanrick Жыл бұрын
@@benjaminsmith2287 "virtually every regard". Sure, it might ride better (although Model Y 2023 has improved significantly on the prior version), not sure about build quality, again, historically Tesla have had issues here but the latest Model Y seems to be very good on build quality. But the Tesla is much better on price, range, efficiency, charging network, practicality, performance, software, features, sound system, safety etc. people need to understand that there is not a distinction between a car and a BEV. Soon virtually all cars will be BEVs, so whoever can make the best BEVs for the cheapest cost is going to take an outsize market share - and its not going to be Toyota
@benjaminsmith2287 Жыл бұрын
@@patmanrick I'm sure about build quality. The Y is not screwed together as well. And I doubt Tesla can do anything with the ride quality to make it better beyond changing the suspension and torsional rigidity of the car. The Y's steering bothers me at higher speeds because it is too sensitive to the smallest input. Even a Porsche has a bit of a buffer because that's a safer and more stable feel for a car. Just so many areas to me the Y doesn't have the refinement that is in your average Hyundai at the same price point. I think an all-new Y has the potential to fix those issues but Tesla is so hell-bent on just producing as many cars as possible, they don't work on vastly improving the refinement. Their aim seems to be volume over everything else. Modern Hyundais have figured out ride comfort, the build quality gets better and better and a lot of cars are doing well in passive safety now. Yes Tesla has some advantages but it isn't like you aren't in a crashworthy car in a Hyundai or something else as well. You don't have to get Tesla or Volvo/Polestar to get a crashworthy vehicle. And how "soon" is "soon." I don't know who you are talking to but in the USA and Canada, most people aren't eager to get into BEVs right now. It may take years. I'm really not sure how long it'll take or what type of BEV friendly or BEV unfriendly type of Congress and government that backs BEV infrastructure will be voted in in the USA at least. And I disagree about Toyota too. They are doing far more with BEVs and going carbon neutral than people are giving them credit for. Just because they question going BEV only in the future doesn't mean that they are totally against BEVs. They have 5 all-new ones coming to Europe by 2026. BEVs are still just very expensive to make now and some aspects of BEV production aren't environmentally friendly whatsoever.
@patmanrick Жыл бұрын
Seems strange to say that you dont know what they can do about ride quality beyond "changing the suspeny" when suspension is like the No1 thing that impacts ride quality along with tyres. Tesla already have updated it v recently. The steering is of course direct, but many people only do higher speeds on highway, where most use autopilot anyway On the speed of the BEV transition, all I'll say is, let's see. Toyota is doing next to nothing in BEVs, they don't even have a dedicated architecture yet and won't do for at least a couple of years according to their own press releases. BEVs are still expensive, but Tesla's are now cheaper than ICE equivalent (it's just that there are currently no compelling budget BEVs IMO). Look at BMW 3 series vs Model 3 for example. If you spec a BMW with equivalent options, the Model 3 is cheaper to buy, cheaper to run and have better performance, safety, tech etc etc
@benjaminsmith2287 Жыл бұрын
@@patmanrick So I just viewed The Late Brake Show's review of the Ioniq 6. He showed a crash test .They got the highest rating for a car in its size class. The car looked to do very well in crash tests. He also said the car rides "like a Jaguar XK." That's how good Hyundai has gotten at ride quality. Toyota and Hyundai/Kia are right now great at having many of their regular cars ride almost as well as cars in their luxury divisions. They're not as quiet. That's where they're not as refined as the luxury division cars. I think in terms of details and refinement, Hyundai may be leading the pack in mainstream cars but Toyota's EVs may feel refined as well. But Hyundai/Kia also do well on the BEV front. That's where Toyota isn't doing as well.

How are you supposed to use wired carplay in that tiny phone compartment? i don't think any cable still fits in there.. Also, still not charger planning available after being on the market for almost a year is unforgivable. I can't shake the feeling that Toyota doesn't actually want people to buy that car, so they can claim that there's no market for BEVs and stick with their old ICEs and hybrids.

Typical of the car industry, giving people what the industry feels like giving rather than what people want. No rear wiper is a safety issue. And cost cutting. A yoke steering wheel is a silly gimmick to copy another company. You can't say it needs a silly computer game steering wheel to see the display. Just position the display where you can see it with a safe steering wheel. This gimmicky approach from the car industry combined with all of them blatantly copying each other is pretty shameful. Driving while using the phone was banned for a reason, but car companies transferred the phone screen to the dashboard. Now it's more dangerous than using a phone. Again, using one screen instead of buttons and dials is cheaper. That's always the drive. Cheaper. Fake vents, fake exhausts, no wipers, no dials, no buttons. I wish some car companies would take leadership and break the trend. I wonder how many lives have been lost because of these silly touchscreens and cost cutting design trends.
