This video was filmed over a month ago and I've had some additional time to get to know the system in my shop. So far, so good. I've had one instance of a blast gate not opening when it was supposed to and it was just a matter of pushing on the movable metal plate to get it working again. Also, my "heads up" in the video about the cords and power requirements still stands. If you cluster your tools like I do, you'll need to plan for the additional receptacles and cord management. Overall, I'm happy with the system and it's great not having to hunt around for a remote anymore! The biggest challenge with this system is the price. If you're looking for basic automation, the simple iVac Automated Vacuum Switch is probably a good bet. But if you're planning on outfitting a full ducted shop, it's going to be a sizable investment.

Marc, For what it’s worth I appreciate the full disclosure on the products. I realize some would think it’s blasphemy, but this is how you support your family. Good for you to be good enough in which corporations seek you out. Your skills certainly didn’t happen overnight and it’s payment well earned. I have had an ivac control system on my dust collection for many years now (just the remote switches, not the gates). It has been flawless the entire time. I recently added a second system and I got another ivac switch for that new system and because of the multiple frequencies they can run without interfering with each other. I find it be a very convenient system and well worth the investment.

Enjoyed the iVac video. Your disclaimer at the beginning was welcome but not necessary for me as I’ve watched your content for many years. I have a small hobby shop where “I’m a maker of fine sawdust and the occasional useful project,” with only three blast gates in my dust collection system. Even so, I have the iVac controller with remote for my dust collector. It makes it safer and easier to always use the system. Would love to have the three gates automated, but that’s beyond the budget in my shop. After all, I give everything away to the kids, grandkids, and friends with no incoming revenue. And I’m OK with that!

Things cost what they cost, either I can afford them or I can’t. It makes no difference to me what a KZbin content creator paid, or didn’t pay, for goods and services. It’s not like anyone on tv is disclosing the nature of their relationship with a sponsor. I have had the Ivac system in my shop for several years and I have had zero issues with it. I have been thinking of upgrading it to the style they have now. There is nothing wrong with what I have now but my nephew is in the process of setting up his own hobby wood shop so I thought maybe I would give him my system and get the current system for myself.... He doesn’t have the budget for it right now and I have been giving him some of my older tools that to help him get set up...

This appears to be the very thing I want in my new shop, & apart of the new dust collection. Good review and disclosure. I looked at this when I installed my cyclone but all the blast gates, sensors and additional recepticals would have cost as much as my cyclone. My system came with a remote to turn it off or on, good enough. Just remember to open the gate.

I agree. I bought one of their remotes for controlling my dust collector without having to walk over to the switch. I love it. But their blast gates are just crazy expensive! Each tool would be over $300 for the blast gate and tool sensor. That's more than some of my older tools cost! Once I get all my duct runs completed, I'm going to experiment with an Arduino-based solution that would be way, way cheaper. There's a KZbin video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/emKtiHtqZ5qibcU) where someone shows how he automated his dust collection system with an Arduino and some servos and relays. He even gives away the source code.

@@ivac9521 That would help some, but about half of my tools have 5" or 6" drops, so I'd need your 6" blast gates, which only come in metal/$$$. One of these days I'm going to try a DIY, Arduino- or Raspberry Pi-based dust collection automation project. For a professional woodworker, it totally makes sense to just install a full iVac system and get on with building cabinets or furniture and making money. But for a hobbyist who also likes tinkering with computers and electronics (i.e. me and probably many other viewers), a DIY solution is attractive. I don't mind paying premium prices for nice tools, or even for high-end ducting (e.g. Nordfab). In those cases there are a lot of alternatives and I know what I'm getting for the extra money. But in a case like this where it seems like prices are high mostly because there's little / no competition, not so much. Though to be fair, iVac's prices for automated blast gates are _way_ lower than Nordfab's 😀

I'm having serious issues with the Tool Address 1 (Always Open Blast Gate) blast gate. It works fine whenever I'm using any of the other tools (Tool Address 2-8, Blast gate 1 closes whenever I turn them on and opens after they close) but whenever I'm finished using Tool 1 (Blaste Gate 1) it closes for about 2 seconds and won't allow air flow to my extractor, maybe 2 seconds won't damage the components of my extractor but I can't figure out why it doesn't stay open.

I have a question regarding the blast gate always open feature. Lets say i have 4 electronic blast gates in my duct system and two blast gates that are non electric. If i open my non electric blast gate, will i be able to shut all 4 electric gates and override the always open feature? Thank you for your time.

Did you have to buy nordfab flange pieces and modify the ivac system to fit with your ducting? How's did you connect them to the nordab?

Apparently Nordfab makes a version of their 4” machine adapter that is slightly wider, allowing it to fit these blast gates. So every blast gate required one.

How well does this setup work if 2 people are in your shop using different tools? If I'm running the table saw and my wife is on a sander, is the system smart enough to keep both blast gates open? Also, is it possible to configure 2 of the sensors to operate 1 blast gate? The use case for that would be me having 2 tools close together with 2" dust ports. I dont mind these two tools sharing the same 4" blast gate. So I would turn on either or both of my drill press and router table and the single blast gate would open.

How does it an handle an instance of material getting stuck in the gate while its trying to close? Does it try to close for X amount of seconds and throw an error? The same issue would also come up in the case of broken linkage.

Hey Mark. Been watching for a bit because I'm about to start fiddling with wood working in my retirement years. I've read every comment as of 'this' comment, and tbh I'm not surprised at all at the negative comments; don't agree with them, just not surprised. The reason I'm not surprised is because I realized two (2) important things a long time ago. 1. People watching YT videos are too damn lazy (or possibly just too stupid) to click on the "Show More" button in the description and actually read the damn thing. 2. People get so damned butt-hurt nowadays about other people getting free stuff because they (those other people) have a successful YT channel and they (the butt-hurt people) don't; I believe this in large part results from simple jealousy tbh. I retired at 53 and am about to turn 56. My point is that I've watched a LOT of YT videos over the previous couple of years. BY FAR... You are one of, if not the most transparent YTers I have come across when it comes to endorsements. Just from "listening to what you say" in the video, I gather these companies may be paying you to use their products, but they sure aren't "buying your opinion" on the matter. And if deciphering that from the video is too GD hard for most people, you specifically spell it out, in English no less, right there in the description. Alas, our society has become one of the laziest that has ever existed since we were put on this earth. Anyway, good video none-the-less. And fyi... I'll be filling my shop mostly with Powermatic and Festool based on watching your videos and then doing some followup research on my own. I'll be ordering a new PM jointer next week and am excited to start building some stuff. I already have a lot of the other basic tools just from being a contractor, so I'll use them for now. But if this wood working bug "grabs a-hold of my balls" so-to-speak, I'm going to put the Dewalt stuff away and fill my shop with Powermatic tools. Thanks for what you do.

I bought the Ivac switch box 2 years ago and the relay burned. It seem that i’m not the only one who had that problem. The two breaker are useless. Would’n recommand those product.

How did you address the the 220 to 110? What is a contactor and how did you install that? And can you install that to any 220 tool like a table saw?

The sensors don’t care about the tool voltage. They just clamp to the power cord. As for the contractor, that just something that allows a high power 220 tool to accept on/off commands from a lower power switch. I don’t give wiring advice but if you google around you should find info on it.

Looks like a great product. My question is with the large dust collector is it good to be Turning it on and off when you go from tool to tool? I actually asked about this awhile back on Friday live and you said it wasn’t recommended to cycle the dust collect in and off too much. Thanks for the info!!

I mentioned this in the video. It has settings for turn off time. I have 45 seconds to fire up the next tool before the system shuts off.

Hi Jeff. In order to look after High Power Dust collectors we supply a software update to the iVAC Pro Switch called Minimum Run Time. This ensures that the Dust Collector runs for at least a programed time of 2, 4 or 8 minutes. This avoids over heating of the motor. I don’t recall if your miter saw is connected to your central vac. The blast gate looked a little slow to open. Do you think there would be any issue with quick use tools like the miter saw? I priced this out for my cabinet shop and it quickly became more expensive than I was hoping. Maybe when I build a new shop and get a central vac I’ll check this out again.

William Butler I have one on my miter saw (separate system from my table saw) and what I did was set the off time for a full minute. That way when I'm making multiple cuts it gives me time to grab the next piece of stock or make a measurement or line something up without the collector shutting off right as I'm about to use it again. This minimizes the amount of machine cycling. Also, when I'm just going to make a quick cut I'll spool up the saw for a second to get the collector going so it's already pulling suction when I make the cut. The ivac puts a slight delay on DC startup so you don't have the inrush of the tool and the dust collector hitting your electrical system at the same time.

I would normally say this is a luxury item but I keep accidentally leaving blast gates open on other machines and my dust collector isn't powerful enough to compensate, so then my jointer backs up and pukes chips into my face and it takes me 10 mins to get them all out. I think the price is ok. I know what goes into that and I think it could be lower but I get why it isn't.

Mark, I wish you’d back away from promoting these super high cost gimmicks and stay with shop made jigs that will get the job done for under $50. These fancy dust collection setups that would add $1800 to my dust collection system cost or replace a perfectly functional Biesemier fence with a different fence for another $350 or more make me worry about your allegiances. Have you become a high end huckster in your old age? I admit, I might try out and maybe even keep a freebie from them but I wouldn’t be making a full video touting their overpriced offerings.

Dennis, I think you're letting your personal distaste for expensive things cloud your vision and memory. I have been using and talking about expensive tools since the beginning. In my earliest productions, you'll see brands like Lie Nielsen, Festool, and Powermatic. So if you think I'm a high-end huckster now, you should think I've been a high-end huckster since day one. I did a full video because that's what iVac paid for and I liked the product. There's no gimmick here. It does what it says it does. If it's not for you, then move along. I'm baffled by your need to leave a comment like this. You, yourself, admit that you'd keep it if it was sent to you. So if you had a channel on KZbin with lots of subscribers, you'd be lying if you say that you wouldn't also do a video advertisement for them if they were willing to pay for it. And there's certainly no reason to question my allegiances. I make my allegiances known and I'm completely transparent in my dealings with companies. By the way, can't wait to see your suggestion for how to get this done with shop-made jigs for under $50. lol

The Wood Whisperer Yes, Mark, I totally agree. I have always thought you were a high end equipment huckster since the beginning. I still enjoyed your projects which is why I still watch. When you get past the pitching I do learn from your projects even though I’ve been a hobbyist in woodworking for almost 60 years. The difference is that now the pitching is for stuff that 99% of your viewers can’t afford. That places it in the ‘over the top’ category. Seriously, what hobbyist is going to shell out $1800 or more to improve or customize a dust collection system that already works but you just have to manually close a gate and/or manually push a button on your remote to start it or turn it off? The audience for that has to be extremely small. Just because I admire Festools for their quality and good design, doesn’t mean I’ll ever shell out the $$$$$$ for their gear any more than I would shell out $250K for a Mercedes AMG or a $350 fence to replace my Biesemier which works just great. FYI, I do own a Powermatic drill press - got it for 25% of new price on CraigsList. It works fine but doesn’t drill holes any quicker or better than my old Grizzly. My reason for upgrading was I wanted a floor model with more power and this was cheaper than a new Grizzly. None of my jigs have ever cost me more than $50 LOL. I have 8 of them for different equipment including a cross cut sled for the table saw, a table for my drill press built of free plans from WoodSmithShop, a trammel arm for my router and a circle cutting jig both from New Yankee Workshop (thanks Norm). If you can get the high end stuff free for pitching their products, please don’t feel offended - It’s your choice. I said in the first comment I would do the same. I just wish you would point out in advance that this entire video is an ad for very pricey stuff that 99% of you won’t ever consider buying for your hobby shop. Then I might still watch it out of curiosity and wouldn’t think twice about your motives. Thanks for your thoughtful response.

And I'm not offended at all. I'm doing what I've always done. I'm just baffled by the fact that you are taking offense and then asking me to make disclosures that I've already made.
