Was about to buy a blue dial Tag Aquaracer (Automatic) before stepping into a Longines shop and checking out their new Hydroconquest with a ceramic dial. Even if they were the same price, the Hydroconquest is a higher quality watch. Considering the Longines costs about USD1,000 less, it really is a no brainer. Great video and very mature replies to some rude comments.

@PerthWAtch5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for those thoughts - which Breitling and TAG watches did you have a look at? If they were modified ETA 7750 movements then yeah I reckon this Longines is definitely the better one. However if talking Breitling B01 or Heuer 01/02 movements, those are in-house calibers and arguably have more desirability than the Longines.
@sktfan38435 жыл бұрын
@@PerthWAtch I checked the Breitling Navitimer it is awesome but a bit pricey, the basic model chrono price is ~A$8000. I did not checked other models as i am not interested in their aesthetics but the Navitimer was stunning in actual and there were 20-30 models displayed. While for Tag i checked their heritage Heur 02 and the Monaco 11-12 but it seems there is no wow factor aesthetically to me unlike the Hydroconquest ceramic and the Breitling which is stunning in actual view. I need to comeback in Sydney soon to grab maybe the Hydroconquest or the Longines Avigation (big eye), hopefully.

I walked into the Longines boutique shop in Sydney and had a look at the Master collection triple date chronograph with moon phase complication. The watch is fitted with the L687.5 caliber which I expected to be a cam actuated Valjoux 7751 movement. To my surprise there under the hood was a beautifully finished movement with a blue tempered column wheel actuated chronograph. The bones are a Valjoux 7751 but Longines have had the movement exclusively modified. I purchased the watch and was surprised that it lost only 5 seconds per week. This is the most accurate mechanical watch I have ever owned. The movement has a silicon hair spring which I was not keen on at first. But the accuracy of a silicon hair spring has changed my opinion of them. I think Longines is producing some of the most amazing timepieces at fantastic price points. Longines is back and going from strength to strength. My favourite affordable Swiss watch brand.

Longines is a good brand with history that is nigh on incomparable (older than Patek, for example) and some great designs. They haven't done so well of late, perhaps due to poorer marketing... but that's a good thing for the discerning buyer as you don't have to overpay for their stuff. Why are you put off by a silicone hairspring?

It was lack of knowledge on the advantages of a silicon hair spring. I know better now. Fantastic advancement in mechanical watch design.

In February (one of the last cruises before covid-19), I got this Tag, which I love. To me, the Longines (disclaimer: I’ve never owned one) looks like every other watch in the class, whereas with the ceramic bezel, bracelet links, and placement of the complications make the Tag more visually interesting. If I were buying an investment watch, da true diver, or trying to impress clients, I wouldn’t buy either one of these, but I do get more compliments on this Tag than on my Rolex Datejust, or other watches. You get what you pay for. If you want it super accurate, perfect movement, etc., don’t buy these. I just like the fact that the Tag stands out a bit from the crowd at this price point. I got it for $2500 USD (no tax!) in the ship gift shop after talking them down from a ridiculous $4700 USD, so I felt like I got it for a fair deal. It will stay in my small (but growing!) collection. Thanks for putting this comparison together.
@PerthWAtch4 жыл бұрын
Interesting comment about the placement of complications - the Valjoux 7750 is the most ubiquitous and widely used Swiss automatic chronograph movement of all time, and it's ubiquity is part of its downfall - almost everyone has one or has seen one, and it is really nothing special. Day-date with 6-9-12 sub-dials pretty much guarantees it's the 7750. If the retailer on the ship was listing this TAG for $4700 then they're going way above the MSRP (I'm surprised there aren't laws against this...?) and probably hoping to pull a fast one on hapless holiday makers!

If I was you, either upgrade to the newer hydroconquest, or go after an Omega Seamaster. Breitling is too expensive for how much money they lose as soon as you buy it, and Rolex is just too much hype and expense. The Omega will keep better value than the Breitling. Both watches and brands are excellent choice. But today Tag Heuer is just a very slightly higher brand. Tag Heuer is Ferrari and Formula 1 and those are a real deal and luxury! It isn't the same like fake advertising using fake movie people like actors ala James Bond etc... Longines is an iconic name with good horological reputation, but in today's world Tag Heuer is slightly more prestigious if it's the right word. Also genius of world watch industry Jean Claude Biver is involved with Tag Heuer, Zenith, Omega, Hublot.... So buy what your heart says, because either way is a right choice, but judging on paper with rational arguments Tag Heuer should win by very little.
@PerthWAtch5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing those thoughts - I think in terms of brand consciousness among the general public there is absolutely no question about the success of TAG Heuer marketing... they are definitely in the top 5 names (maybe even top 3) that any random person will come up with when asked about watch brands. Among horology enthusiasts however the appeal and respect is quite different, as I've briefly explained. So it depends on the circle of people discussing this. With regards to "fake advertising", well I don't really know what you mean by that phrase - there is no question about the success of Omega. Whether James Bond is "fake" or not, the results of their marketing are very very real. You seemed to be taking a shot at Omega yet mention them positively a few sentences later...
@lulolee53255 жыл бұрын
My message is that people are shallow and stupid, and Swiss industry have used this phenomenon with public's moronic obsession about fake characters from popcorn movies with some success... Omega watches are very good regardless so it's hard to tell how many people were affected by that infamous advertising campaign. That story with first man on the moon worked much better for me:). I like Hublot approach when real deal self made successful talented people wear Hublot watch in real life with style. I like real things and real facts. I was also affected by one online "hero" talking nonsense about watches, and somehow dismissed Tag Heuer, but when I was in Paris two years ago I took a tour around watch boutiques, and Tag Heuer watches impressed me so much, so much quality you get at that price range... Watch brand reputation is so fragile because for the most part is based only on marketing and public opinion, and unfortunately any moron who has freedom to talk loudly in public can hurt brand's image... people always been like sheep they believe what they are being told... that's why so many people including myself ask other opinions about wristwatch purchase choice.... Thanks there are genius people like Jean Claude Biver who have much more authority than those clueless "experts"...

If you look at the product range, the Tag Heuer should easily have won the brand comparison. Longines is mere entry-level without in-house movements, Tag Heuer has nowadays their own Chronograph and even tourbillon movement. Longines is nothing but a shadow of its past.

Depends on how "in-house" is defined... some argue it's made within the same group. I think the TAG scandals make it hard for people to rate them highly. Thierry Stern had an interesting comment on the TAG tourbillon...
@urieelSEptim5 жыл бұрын
@@PerthWAtch it really depends on how you rate the scandal and the history. For me, the lineup nowadays is more important, but i prefer the new tags over the new longines (with a few exceptions) so i guess im biased

@@PerthWAtch concerning Stern: I think its pretty much bullshit what he said. The tourbillon is of course not hand finished, that makes it cheaper. But its certainly not killing the quality of swiss watchmaking

Actually I too disagree with Stern, it's rather poor form coming out to say that... when you are the head of Patek, your words should carry some weight in value. I rather liked Biver's more measured response in this case.

Actaully you will that this model of Longines has an in house movement.
