My 2003 XC90 has the 5 -speed AF33 transmission which has the 24mm hex drain plug. I had to fill it through the dipstick tube and access is a bit better than the fill plug on the TF-80SC. I paid about the same for 5 litres of Comma ATF from Halfords. Euro Car Parts were asking even more for 5 litres of the correct ATF and that was with their discount.

Fab video mate, i had the gear box oil changed by a special automatic box mechanic about a year ago charged me £35, and I supplied the oil did not notice any improvement in fact it was the same as when I put it in with him, went to see him about 3 weeks ago about changing the solenoids in the box he said 8 new solenoids plus new oil £480 all in ,the car is a good but not worth doing at that price ,so after looking on KZbin was going to have a go on changing the solenoids my self after all been in the motor trade 55 years doing repairs etc 68 now and still loves a challenge . Then came across your video about the oil needing to be flushed 3 times to get most of the crap oil out only done 84 k ,what have i got to lose bought the oil and flushed her out 3 times each time start up and engaging the gears ,it would not go above third but done all the other gears about 5 times in and out ,on the first drain there was exactly just under 3 litres of black oil made sure the measurement was spot on so just put in on the last refill just under 3 litres of new dextro 6 best oil the exact same as the first drain off ,refitted everything back on to the car then out on the first run with in 50 metres the car was in fort gear smooth as silk never been as good haven't done a long trip, but you can just feel the difference not like when the mechanic supposed to have changed the oil starting to think he did not do the job just kept my oil and money , this time you definitely could feel the improvement the mechanic will not be having £480 of me giving her good run on Friday let you know thanks again by the way trying to buy a lexia to be able to reset the gearbox oil counter Peugeot 407 coupe v6 2.7

Another great video sirrob, looking at buying a volvo v50 d5 geartronic right now. My jeep wj has bad rust around rear lower arms on chassis so sadly is getting scrapped. Was wondering if these transmissions were any good and how hard to change fluids. I do 99% of my servicing, did transmission fluid change on Jeep GC overland including filter and gasket, new plastic round connector switch too. Jeep was great shifting through the gears after that. Saved pounds on garage prices too. Thanks for this video sirrob. Vinny.

Correct in my opinion: Engine running and in "drive" the correct level is when the fluid is being circulated. With the engine stopped; The fluid will raise the level, as it drains back. So using the dipstick or the "Level Plug" will remove the essential fluid....it will be short on re-start.

Thanks Simon for another great video! With these boxes being "sealed for life" and the car in your video already being at 135k, (it should have had maybe 3 changes already at that mileage, no one knows) but was still functioning acceptably. What would be a reasonable interval to do changes at? and have you ever changed the ATF and then experienced wet clutch slippage due to the "less grippy" new fluid?
@sirobb
@sirobb 3 жыл бұрын
I'd change it routinely every 40-50k miles if the car has normal use. I've never encountered problems using new fluid. Some do less dramatic changes so just one drain and fill every couple of years or so.

Yes, Samuel.... Scotty Kilmer is another..... Used to like the bloke and he was quite entertaining but lof late he seems to be obsessed with calling people "STUPID!" And Shouting "DON'T!!!" on all things & everything under the sun. One week he was extolling the virtues of Volvo cars ....build quality...etc... the next week ...."Volvos are STUPID! (Battery in the back of the car....." Loses power over distance" (Rubbish) Alternator difficult to remove: So are many other marques & models.....) Losing all credibility with me, I'm afraid. As regards the seals & O rings..... Don't go Volvo...... Extremely expensive and no different from other suppliers. An aluminium washer...is exactly that. An "O" ring is made of top quality material by every manufacturer. (There was a case 20 years ago that some O rings were not compatible with R134a refrigerants in AC systems.... but I'm pretty sure that issue has been long resolved.) Don't pay crazy money for stock items like that. Stay Good. Cheers.

3 questions Si...1 - Can you run the car on axle stands while circulating the new fluid or does it need to be on the floor? 2 - Is there a specific torque value for the main drain plug before the final fill? 3 - If I don't have access to DICE/VIDA to reset the counter is it worth doing this procedure?
@sirobb
@sirobb 3 жыл бұрын
1. You could have it on axle stands but there is minimal benefit versus the risk doing this. Holding the various gear positions with the front wheels braked is the procedure and there's no need to stray from that. The car needs to be level whether on or off the ground. 2. I can't remember the torque of hand but around 25-30Nm like the oil sump won't get you in trouble. From experience on many cars, fit a brand new seal every time and use common sense when tightening drain bolts. 3. The TCM counts every occasion where the fluid temperature goes above a certain threshold. Once it's gone over that threshold X number of times, a Transmission Service Required message will appear and you may get reduced performance. Resetting the oil counter tells the transmission module that new fluid has been put in and means you won't risk getting service messages for old fluid and performance issues when you've actually got good fluid.

Good video for anybody wanting to get some fresh oil in the box. In Vida, I seem to remember on mine that the oil counter was something to do with counting how many times the box oil went over temperature and would flag up a transmission service light if it reached its threshold? To make my cars gearbox shifts reset it is possible to clear the gearbox memory but not do the full relearn process. This resets the box to what I presume are standard settings and the box learns from that point on. Be interested to learn if simply reseting the oil counter also resets the gearbox in other ways?
@sirobb
@sirobb 3 жыл бұрын
The adaption reset function you allude to is mentioned in the video as a kind of "there but not essential" function. It depends on how bad your changes have become. I've read anecdotal accounts of fluid being changed without the counter reset and the full benefits of new fluid not being felt until at least that procedure was done. This suggests that the reset is more than just a counter going to zero. I have no intentions of going through a fluid change process and not resetting the counter to test though. 😊

@@sirobb When I first changed my gearbox oil I didn't have Vida so I didn't reset the oil counter on mine! The gearbox adapted slowly and within a week was much better behaved. I used Mannol oil as well and three years later I think it needs changing again. The oils viscosity is the key issue I believe as if it thins out to much under heating the gearbox wont adapt quickly enough and hard shifts and flares are more common on mine now when hot. Yet another 'I'll do that soon' job!
@paulluggar5964
@paulluggar5964 3 жыл бұрын
Just to add, yes there is the adaptations process but you can simply clear the memory without going through the adaptions process, from my awful memory there was an odd button in Vida with something like TS200 on it which has no relevance to anything I could see, pressing tgat virtual button allowed me to clear the memory without going through the adaptions process. THank you for your video. One question: the very first time when you take out the level plug there are some fluid pouring out (it means that fluid level is above the height of level tube). But after the final drain you pour in new fluid to the level of level tube only. Why so?
@sirobb
@sirobb Жыл бұрын
The engine is *off* when I remove the level plug to drain the fluid at the beginning. More fluid is settled in the sump so some fluid will leak out. The engine is *running* when I remove the level plug to set the level of the fluid at the end. The fluid is being pumped through the gearbox so doesn't settle and leak out.

Thanks for the video. How do you rate the reliability of the older Volvo autoboxes?
@Jeroen74
@Jeroen74 3 жыл бұрын
I have a 2004 V70 D5 with nearly 310.000 miles on it, and the autobox still works reasonably well given the mileage and age... but the 2 to 3 shift is not always smooth, and sometimes the 3 to 4 shift has a noticeable delay. If I happen to press the accelerator right at the moment it has decided to shift back from 3 to 2 it might shift with a very unpleasant bang. Very rarely reverse engages harshly. I changed the fluid around the 210.000 mile mark, a few months after I bought it. I drained the fluid and put about 3.5 liters back in, drove about 600 miles, and repeated that twice for a total of three drains. What probably helps longevity is that this car is only used for daily commutes to work which is about 60 miles of highway driving, and I don't abuse it.

If it has a fluid it needs a change don't matter if it says life time its just a gimick. And the car is now on 162k the ATF has gone black I've read that if is goes black or smells burnt don't change it and others say do change it so i'm a bit stuck on what to do? @Sirobb Great video as always. Im sorry Simon but after 8 years of great service I have finally succumbed to temptation and bought a lovely 69k 2012 P3 D5 R Design. After performing the 'Gibbons method' on my P2 D5 a couple of times im more than happy to do this drain and fill method on my new P3. Given that the gearbox is so similar, there's a part of me that wonders just how different any new fluid spec might be but I can't hand on heart say to use something if it's not listed in the handbook. A Euro 3 D5 for example is probably 95% the same physically as a Euro 4 D5 but they do use different oil specs. Check every listed spec conformity number on your JWS3309 barrel though as you may find a number which still matches the new requirements for the >2011 gearbox.
