►Is your transmission slipping? Are you experiencing any hard or overly aggressive shifts? Have you gone 30,000 miles or more since your last fluid change? If you've answered "yes" to any of these questions, it's time to service your Volvo's automatic transmission.
In this DIY FCP Euro's Volvo Catalog Manager, Adam Goral, walks us through the necessary steps in order to drain, fill, and replace the fluid in your Volvo's transmission. We'll also discuss the tools needed, parts recommended to replace, and any tips and tricks to expedite the process.
READ THIS DIY ON OUR BLOG: blog.fcpeuro.c...
BUY THE KIT: www.fcpeuro.co...
This is a comprehensive kit put together by Adam that includes everything you need to get the job done, including the updated spec of fluid provided by Aisin. This includes the fluid and gaskets you need as well as seals & plugs that otherwise may be forgotten. Aisin is the manufacturer of the TG-81SC and TF-80SC transmissions, so you know you're using the highest quality fluid and components in your Volvo when you purchase this particular kit.
Aisin Type WS fluid is the only approved oil for Aisin TG81SC transmissions. None of the other fluids available on the market have been evaluated by Volvo to meet the requirements of these specific transmissions regarding shift quality, slipping lock-up functionality and transmission durability.
Final fluid level should be set while the transmission temperature is warm (50-60C) with engine running on a level surface. An electronic TCM reset is highly recommended after the oil change, especially if it has been a while since the last service.
We recommend replacing or changing the fluid in your Volvos automatic transmission roughly every 30,000 miles. If you are unsure of when the last time your Volvo has had its fluid changed - it's a good idea to go ahead and change it for peace of mind. It is also a good idea to change the fluid if you are experiencing and slipping or hard and overly aggressive shifting from the transmission.

I'm interested in changing the flui on a S80 I purchased but I'm worried. I had a Audi several years ago that had high mileage on it when I purchased it so wanted to change the transmission fluid. Once the new fluid was in, the Audi couldn't move at all when drive was engaged. The shop said the clutches in transmission were so badly burned, they could not pick up the new fluid. They actually threw the old fluid back in the transmission to get the car to move again. My question is... Should you change the fluid on a high mileage car if you're not sure if it's ever been changed? Is there any test that can be done before changing the fluid to know if it's ok to change it?

you should let the transmission sit for 10 seconds in every gear (both ways up and back)...this will dilute the fluid properly the first two drains and give you a closer to bright red at final fill.

After watching this excellent video I became motivated to change the fluid in my 2018 S60. I've had it for about 6 months and it would occasionally shift with a thump. It has 93k miles and pretty sure it hasn't been changed before as the fluid was quite dirty. Overall it was relatively easy although the fill plug was really tight and took a lot of force to remove. Surprisingly I didn't even make a big mess which is my specialty. After the second fill I plugged in the scanner and the fluid was already at 33C. but I was surprised how long it took to get to 50C. I didn't time it but pretty sure it was more than 30 minutes. Finally, I took it for a short drive and it seems to shift better than before.

Quick question lads, i just bought a 2007 s60r with the tf80sc, it has 237k miles and im unsure if the trans oil was ever flushed. It seems the valve solanoid for the trans is going bad due to shift flares, hard shifts, etc. Is it bad to flush all of it now without replacing the valve solanoid first? Or will flushing it remove the gunk that also is holding those solenoids together to allow engagements?

@looncraz

This is rather common - old oil being replaced by too much clean oil has been known to reveal problems (not technically cause them - the problem was already there, but the dirty oil was hiding it). For this reason I prefer a simpler procedure: drain, measure what came out, put that much new back in, call it a day. Do it every other oil change.

Why there is such an excessive fluid amount when the T40 plug is undone for the first time? It should have been filled in up to the plug level, and it seems that it has been overfilled? Where is that extra fluid coming from? It is because the level is set when the car is running and the fluid is circulating somewhere in a gearbox? Strange procedure I would say... Another question - is there a filter you need to change as well? Thanks!
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 19 сағат бұрын
No filter to be done on this one! Completely normal for fluid to come out since it is off and not at operating temp, being pumped through the system.

@alexandermartincausey7333
@alexandermartincausey7333 4 жыл бұрын
An adaption just resets the transmission computer to new fluid. The transmission is "smart" and has a program that will adjust shift points, calculate shift times, etc to maximize smoothness and minimize wear as the fluid gets old. Changing the fluid? Reset the adaptions.

The shops and dealers in my area have a different (and better in my opinion) method. They remove the lines and set up an empty bucket for the new fluid and the supply line sucks in fresh fluid from a large container. They usually bill me for 12qts. Then they just start the engine and let the pump cycle out all the old fluid. When the fluid coming out turns new, they shut the car off, put all the lines back, reset the fluid counters, and set the level.

Everyone: DO NOT attempt to bypass reading the temperature using a scan tool. It needs to be at the temperature range mentioned so that final level is correct. Fluid expands when heated and contracts when allowed to cool down. Why not just measure the drained old fluid and allow to cool down at room temperature. When done, that is the right level of the new fluid to fill. It seemed that the process shown here may not be necessary... What do you think???

I did my friend C30 with an AW55 transmission recently, but the method I used was different. After drining the gearbox & refilling , we the disconnected the oil output to the oil cooler , then ran the engine for a couple of seconds to push a litre of oil out, stopped the engine & replaced a litre. This was carried out 5 times, or untill the oil is clear. This method greatly reduces the new oil mixing with the old oil.

@martinwolfson
@martinwolfson Жыл бұрын
Be nice if you got a reply on this. No one seems to know for sure. Some research from posters on swede speed and other sites indicate that the counter works (or initiates counting) when a certain temperature is reached. I think ultimately after a certain number a DTC is set indicating transmission service required. I get the impression that the counter need not be reset. If you intend on owning the car long-term it's probably advisable to obtain the knockoff Vida dice soft and hardware to enable you to delve into the brains and make adjustments including the transmission reset as necessary.

Staying on top of intervals will help reduce the need of the transmission removal. So if the fluid is still new enough to just do fluid services, that will help a lot!

If I may ramble, this takes me back to when my friend and I tried doing this on his 2009 IS350 and my P2 T5 last year. When it was time to fill the torque converter with new fluid, I drew the short straw and laid under the car pumping fluid into the fill plug on his IS while we had the level check in it (same design as here) until bright red came out into the pan we had underneath. Then we let it get to temp and did a final check. He was inside shifting gears after primary fill because he's obsessive about his car. So far everything is fine, but Ionder if that could be done here. I just don't want to get us all in trouble. 😂

For my 2019 XC40 I removed approx. 2.5-L of Tx fluid from a cold Tx and engine. I did not use a scan tool to monitor fluid level at the end. I did what the video instructed: drained first, then added 4-qt, restarted engine and rowed the gears (didn't run long enough to get up to temp), then drained exactly the 4-qt I put in during the 1st refill. Lastly, I measured exactly the same amount I removed when I first drained it (2.5-L) and refilled with exactly that at the last fill.

It seems to be running just fine. Been quite some time since I did. But you're right this will work as long as temp during the drain is the same temp as the fluid I put in and we presume the fluid level in the Tx was correct from the factory to begin with. So far so good though.

The procedure I saw and did on mine was a real pain. Disconnect the return hose from the trans cooler into the trans. Use a peice of hose to extend that hose into a container you can see the fluid level in. Put a hose with a funnel attached to the tube where the return hose went into the transmission. Start the engine and run it until 2 quarts have been pumped into the container. Shut engine off an pour 2 quarts of fluid into the funnel going into the trans. Repeat. Shift through the gears as you are repeating. I did I think I did 12 quarts with the procedure.

I have a 12 volt oil pump so I'm thinking of making an adapter to adapt 3/8" hose to the small drain plug. I'll buy an extra drain plug, drill it out, and weld a short piece of 1/8" pipe (3/8" dia) to it. This way I could simply pump the new oil in from the bottom for each fill, eliminating the hassle of ever removing and re-installing the airbox.

Can you do a transmission fluid drain and fill just like you just did without a scan tool because you said on the very last fill you need to get the transmission up to a specific temperature of 50 to 60 degrees Celsius or can I just run the vehicle for 20 to 30 minutes and get the vehicle to the correct operating temperature also do you need a scan tool to reset the transmission codes after the drain and fill so you don't get any unusual codes for like temperature or something
