CCTV Camera Pros has been designing LPR camera systems for business and government customers for more than a decade. We also supply security camera systems for home, but LPR cameras are usually not practical to install on a house. This is mainly because ALPR cameras should be installed with the most direct angle to the license plate detection zone as possible. This is usually not possible on a house that is typically set back 25 to 35 feet from the street in front of it.
Mike, CCTV Camera Pros co-founder, mounted one of our LPR-IP4 cameras on his house to run some automatic license plate recognition testing. Expectations were low. However, the camera performed much better than we expected. At distances of 110 to 140 feet, the LPR-IP4 was actually detecting license plates and identify the letters and numbers on the plates. When the ALPR software did not detect the plates, the license plates were still clear enough for a human to read the plates when playing back the recorded video surveillance footage. This is known as license plate capture.

Viewtron AI security cameras support the ability to setup an intrusion zone and automatically detect when a vehicle enters the intrusion zone. This intrusion detection can be used to trigger video surveillance recording on any security camera on the system. This allows you to bookmark all of the events when a car passed by the LPR camera. This makes it very easy for users to locate all of the vehicle detection events and manually review the license plates.

16 ft high looking at vehicles come straight up a long driveway workable, or do I need to get it lower? Human readable is fine.

16 feet is really high to mount a license plate capture camera. I have tested an LPR camera installed on my house at about 8.5 feet high and set back 35 feet from the road, and that is pushing the limits for license plate capture. If the camera is centered directly on the driveway and you zoom the lens all the way out on our Viewtron LPR-IP4, you may be OK for human readable license plate capture. Your endless videos, articles, research and communication seem second to none. Thanks for being honest about your products and it's limitations. I'm still saving up for a system and your company will be my choice. Do you think a future software update to the AI will increase the systems ability to recognize and data log the license plates? If you can read them manually, it would seem the info is there with the hardware and physical installation. Perhaps a stronger ai program will complete the loop?

@@ablackformula Thank you for the kind words! The Viewtron ALPR software does improve over time, so the effective distance and angles may be increased in the future. Within the current recommended ranges, the LPR-IP4 will detect almost every plate. In addition to providing a fail-safe way to bookmark license plate capture events, we do always recommend using an overview camera with LPR cameras, so even if you miss a plate here and there, the vehicle object detection picks it up and bookmarks the event. In addition, the LPR camera is focused in on a tight LPR detection area. The overview camera gets the rest of the scene and everything else going on. Please let us know if we can help further.
