love these videos!!! its been 6 years since I got parts to rebuild my land cruiser a442 Hydro transmission for my 1991 HDJ81 and its still going strong with the upgraded billet torque converter, custom clutch packs and extreme valve body!!! hello from Canada Rodney your rock!!! Hi Rocket, yep my trans coped a gut full on a trip in qld tele track. The breather was located half way up the fly wall the water was much higher. The snatch recovery tool about 2 mins and I had to shut the engine down. I had no indication that water had got in until about 30 klms later when oil started blowing out the breather. The trans needed a rebuild in Cairns. And as you pointed out the clutches had lost their coating.😢

Always great, informative videos from you guys. Transmission breathers - something I keep putting off but pretty dumb given how often it goes through the drink. Onto it. Really value you guys doing these, helps sort out the kinds of mods that are worth doing mechanically rather than just to look good. Very educational. With the Gympie floods I did go through water a couple inches above the bottom of the door. In fact tomorrow it’s getting a full flush and kit from my mechanic. I got my fingers crossed. The nomad valve body from you guys is still perfect.

Great work Gents! My GU Patrol has had a heart transplant with the 6.5l Optimizer and 4L80E gearbox, (it’s got your compushift gearbox controller in it) you’ve got me wondering now if they installed gearbox breather tubes when they did the install at Brunswick Diesels. Where would I look on a 4L80e to know ? Yes, I enjoy the what went wrong segments a lot, keep them coming! Cheers Phil from Sydney

I am in the USA and I have seen Dodge Durangos with engine coolant in the transmission. It is pretty destructive.

Another informative vid, any deep water I avoid it if possible, it's not worth the damage and expense rebuilding.

Ranger wading depth is 800mm for all models, except Raptor, which is 850mm. So they designed venting to meet that. Go deeper and you should trade-in for a submarine.

I like to see what goes on inside the transmission and what went wrong. I'd really like to see you do a rebuild. I guess you have stripped that transmission right down and cleaned it so how do you put it all together and test it!

I haven't done that to my auto but I killed a brand new transfer case on it's maiden voyage all the bearings had completely collapsed by the time I got out of the track. That was in my Suzuki .

Mixed feeling with this. We really don't need to as sales are as strong as ever and the comments are that we are certainly on the right track and prefer what we are doing with the brand-new genuine Toyota transmissions. However, my main concern is that we will never point out a negative with any other companies work, we know others do with us but we would prefer to hold the moral high ground and just respect everyone's work.

My partner had this happen to his jeep he tried to save it buy flushing it, but in the end he took the auto out of the jeep and took it to a transmission specialist for a full rebuild

Hi Rod, what are your thoughts on new 70 series 4cyl auto outdoing the V8 on @ronnydahl ‘S channel? How much of that performance is due to the auto vs manual?

Transmission fairly light weight for heavy towing and the V8 is so detuned from factory that it was never a fair example. The 6 speed in the 2.8L 79 series is only half the size of the 200 series auto we use in the V8 auto conversions.

So in their example of towing a 3 ton van up a hill and 2.8 held 100 kph, you’re thinking that the transmission may not withstand that type of work for long?

In standard form it might but once everyone starts adding all the extra weight of upgrades, larger tyres and engine tune's etc then time will tell what the reliability will be. It's not a bad auto and is fairly reliable in the lighter vehicles so it has a fighting chance but it does seem a little on the light duty side for what I know people are going to throw at it.

I’m in conflict: “Scotty Kilmer” - YT mechanic in the States says do NOT flush transmission fluid through the entire system in a service as he has experienced particles blocking transmission passages. Other mechanics I know say a full flush is best. I’m leaning towards full flush (getting one tomorrow on 2007 120 series Prado). I prefer a full flush as it removes most of the old oil. I can’t understand where the particles Scotty Kilmer talks about as there is a filter. I just don’t get it!?! Can you guys maybe explain this situation in a video, please?

Full flush is the correct way to go but remember that this is done buy using the transmission it's self to pump the old oil out while we replacing the oil as it goes. Absolutely no negative effects from this. Don't listen to anyone that mentions that you shouldn't flush your transmission as it is more of an old wives tale from when they used to use the old transmission flushing machines that is now seen as an archaic way of doing things. The modern passive full flush gets 100% of the oil changed out with no chance of negative effects.

Hey I’m at my wits end I have a gu patrol 4.5 re04 tranny lost 1 due to 500,000 klms towing a caravan overheated long story short only tranny I could find due to time and convenience family vehicle ect was second hand been out for awhile and torque converter wasn’t allocated securely once in vehicle it took a few seconds to pick up drive but would select reverse instantly over the next couple of weeks my wife rang me said she lost drive so on going out I found if u selected first gear it would engage instantly so proceeded to get vehicle home shifting manually all ok next morn I took car to work and cold start perfect drove approximately 10 klms stopped at servo no drive on restart so manual change for the next 20 klm all ok but if u try and kick it down once in drive it will slip into neutral but manually kick it down all ok ?? Overdrive and torque lock up seem to be working ok once in drive? Any heads up will b appreciated cheers and thanx !!

Sorry for the late reply but your filter is blocking each time you start to drive off. However what is blocking the filter is the real problem and the reason that t you will need to replace the transmission unfortunately Steve.
