How To Replace Bad Engine and Transmission Mounts - Astro Van - EP 17

What's going on!
Today, I break down why my Chevrolet Astro van has a rough idle, or shaking idle, which lead to the engine mounts. So, I replaced them and this video should be a relatively straightforward guide on the process.

One advice on the job. Don't tighten any of the bolts until ALL are in and nuts on them. Sometimes it's difficult to get proper alignment of the base to insert the single long bolt. By leaving them all loose you can more easily insert the long bolt through and get a nut on it. Then tighten them all down.

I had a 95 GMC Safari that I drove until about 400k miles, and I currently own a 95 Safari which is at 240k miles. I have probably replaced just about everything at least once between the 2 vans. Working on these vans can be a real bitch sometimes, but not like what I just went through with replacing the passenger side engine mount! What engineer came up with this setup? I had watched your video before starting, and I'm so glad I did because I had never knew how to fandoogle until now. I have never done so much fandoogling in my life! I believe after this nightmare I have reached the Expert Fandoogle badge! I even reached into my soul and came up with cuss words I don't think existed until now! I got it done, and I thank you for making this video, It did help, and was entertaining to boot! May The Fandoogle Be With You!!!

I'd recommend inspecting the mounts before changing the distributor cap, wires, plugs or idler and tensioner pulleys. Easy to see the mounts from under the van. Easier than throwing parts at it. Look for cracks and missing rubber in the carrier. Thanks for the great informative video!

Great video..Thank you.I have a 1990 astro that I love and I was so upset over the motor mount..They want 500 to put the three in and they wanna remove the exhastarter and I told them a Mechanic on you tube didn't have to why do you..I'm just doing it myself..Thanks Brother..great job

did you save the old engine mounts? Them cages are important for those of us with the AWD version - The Prothane bushing kits are the way to go and the OEM cages are way thicker than the replacements you just installed (I've got three videos on the engine mount saga) :)

I did not. Didn’t think much about keeping them. just checked it out, makes a lot of sense man! If/when these mounts go bad, I may very well go that route. I’m sure I could get some used oem ones off of eBay if I needed to. Thanks fir stopping by!

Thanks for the video, quick question: how would rate the difficulty level of replacing the engine mounts on scale 1 to 5, 1 being an oil change and 5 being an engine replacement or clutch??

I hope you kept the original motor mount shells. They are so hard to find and they don't make them any longer. Much stronger and bigger that the cheapo replacement mount you find now. The shell can be used to rebuild the mount.

I have been using Harbor Freights low clearance jack for a while now. It’s probably the best you can get for the price.

I think that are working great! As stable as my Tahoes engines mounts, as far as I can tell. For the price, I would still recommend them
