Easiest paychecks I write are the biggest! I love when my master tech flags 50 hours. That means we all made money 💰. In my hiring process I talk about my company’s core values. Why I’m in business. How I got started in my backyard garage & now have a 3 bay brick and mortar. And I share what I want my business to look like in 5 years, 10 years. Techs & Advisors want more than just a paycheck. The better I do at making employees, customers & vendors feel appreciated - the more money 💰 I make. That’s what we all want as humans is to feel appreciated. My real business is making people feel valued and appreciated - I just do it via auto repair & used auto sales. 🙋🏻♂️I also have my dealers license

AS A FACTORY MASTERTECH I AM IN REALITY THE FULL TIME DIAGNOSTICS TECH ( NO TIME TO REPAIR ) . ITS A DAILY OCCURENCE IN MODERN DEALERS THAT CARE ABOUT THERE CUSTOMERS TO FIGURE OUT THE INTERMITTENT ISSUES AT ALL COSTS . THINGS LIKE MY TRANSMISSION GOES INTO LIMP MODE EVERY 300 MILES FOR 2 MINUTES DUE TO A CAN NETWORK ISSUE THAT MAY JUST BE A SLIGHTLY OVERSPREAD TERMINAL .THAT MAY PAY 1 HOUR OF DIAG DUE TO WARRANTIES AND EXTENDED WARRANTIES . IT CAN BE FIGURED OUT BUT MAY TAKE 8 HOURS VS PISS OF A CUSTOMER BECAUSE SOMEONE IS FLAT RATE AND CANT AFFORD TO DO ANYTHING BUT THROW PARTS AT IT AND NOT LEARN ANYTHING IN THAT PROCESS . IF YOUR IN A SHOP WHERE YOU GET ALL THE ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSIS IN CALIFORNIA YOU SHOULD BE GETTING A HIGH SALARY PERIOD . IF A UPS DRIVER STARTS AT 30 AN HOUR A MASTERTECH SHOULD STAR AT 60 HERE.

My old boss was this guy to a T. Was a "lead tech" at a dealership that went belly up and he started the business after that. Always justified low pay with "I do all the diagnostics", among other things. This was back around 02-03. Dude had a mt2500 scanner. I had one identical at home, knew it backwards and forwards. But yeah, every time I'd grab it to hook it up he'd pretty much take it out of my hands like I was a 5 year old. The last straw was when an older lady was coming in once a week and he'd nail her for a scanner hook-up everytime for the same thing (evap code). One day he was off doing something else and she came in. I knew her outside of work so I popped the hood and got to looking around. Had a large obvious evap line that was broke. I fixed it for her. She came back a couple days later and told the boss how I fixed her car and how he couldn't do it right in front of me. The other guy working with me said I better start looking for another job and boy was he right. My fate was sealed.

ODD THAT THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF HIGHLY EXPERIENCED ELECTRICAL AND DRIVEABILITY TECHS . IT MAY SEEM LIKE THERE SHOULD NEVER BE COMEBACKS FOR AN A TECH BUT WHEN MORE ISSUES WITH CARS ARE ELECTRICAL THESE DAYS AND YOU HAVE 45 STORED CODES ITS SO EASY TO MISS THAT ONE CODE THAT WAS TOTALLY UNRELATED BUT BECAUSE YOU DID NOT DOCUMENT IT ITS ON YOU . Amen brother! Great video!!! And dead on! I've found that some people I really looked up to fall into this category and man it was a bummer! I can't say that I pay the best or always get it right, I try to constantly improve. Many of these guys are keyboard warriors and that's the extent of it. I was in a shop today that pays its tech $300 a week and it's manager $250 a week. There's zero garage keepers insurance, there's zero liability insurance, it's a sole proprietor and the staff is frustrated but stays...... No clue why - they are clearly paid well below minimum wage and the shop is a complete disaster. But think of what this does to our industry? Think of those who would consider coming into and then get treated like that. It's an extreme case no doubt - but it's the whole reason I believe that a barrier of entry should be required. Be it through parts, data or tools. And that's not me being a greedy shop owner - I'm not saying that it should be strictly financial. I'm just saying if you had to prove you were properly insured and had a base knowledge? It would go a long way to improve our profession. Keep up the good work FRM!

Every-time you make one of these videos I ask myself: why would anybody want to be part of the auto repair industry? The work is dirty and difficult, the pay is apparently not that great and the fringe benefits, if there are any, suck. I worked for Westinghouse, Motorola, Alcoa, USFilter and STMicroelectronics all in the semiconductor industry. Motorola sucked and I was out of there within a year but at least they paid me good money and had decent benefits. All of these had one thing in common, they were at least 10 billion dollar companies. Working for a small business seems like a sure way to stay poor as the only purpose of a small business is to make the owner rich. If you're working in the automotive field work for Mahle or Federal-Mogul rather than Mom and Pop.

From the outside looking in, here's what I see - Several different pay structures, as many opinions on which one is best as there are good techs, lots of techs who don't understand business and their own pay structure nor what they could do to earn more money, etc. Here's what I think would solve a lot of this - A good shop, maybe a small chain in an area, such as Atlanta, that has a very good pay structure, has cars stacked up daily and has LONG-TERM employees and very, very little turnover - their pay structure would set the standard. Think of it as Chick-Fil-A for the auto repair business. That's what I see being done to settle it all. A single business with a structure that rewards the good techs AND puts money in the pocket of the owners/management, all the while having customers lined up and smiling employees.

Keep in mind if you want a raise it's probably not a good idea to go call the shop owner a hypocrite. As a shop owner I have a few suggestions for employees that are looking for a raise. 1. If you have only been at a shop for a month or 2 dont expect a raise unless you were told when you were hired that you would get one. Most employees are really good for a couple months and then start slacking off. 2. Go talk to the shop owner, let him know you are needing more money. If he is a good owner and you are making him money he will probably give you a raise.
