I got out of flat rate 2 years ago and went into fleet maintenance and do diag work on the side and couldn't be happier. more pay less work less stress couldn't be happier

I BSed my way into my first dealership job... Day 1 on the job I accidentally backed up my BS by knowing what I didn't know... and have kept repeating that every day. Now I'm a BMW and ASE certified tech with 22 years in the field. 😂

I think holding the part supplier's and such more accountable than the shops. And information! If there is an issue "TSB"... recall ect...

@Car_Doc24Ай бұрын
It's a good point to be honest with you a lot of times I hold up with delivering cars back to customers is a parts issue whether it's a bad part a broken part delayed part to a lack of information from the manufacturer so we can't do things that we need to do in a timely fashion. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying technicians are without flaws. Like frm is saying you have to identify what they are own up to them and fix them as you go along fake it till you make it while still doing quality work and not being a shithead

My shop is a laid-back shop. If a car comes that a rust bucket to minimize breaking of parts the vehicle is worked on with hand tools only.
@MsFireboy2Ай бұрын
I found out when I was in the business. It’s a trade off. Laid back shops sometimes are less stressful. It also depends on areas locations and clients.
@Dc5Knightv2Ай бұрын
Hourly is the way to go along with nighshift, you are left alone to fix fix cars, no politics no metrics.
@Car_Doc24Ай бұрын
So you don't like being held accountable and would rather fly under the radar so you don't yell at
@Car_Doc24Ай бұрын
What do you want to believe it or not any business that's trying to turn a profit has a metric eventually if you don't meet that metric you will be replaced. I have plenty of friends and acquaintances that have worked hourly. Specifically for a very popular EV company they have all been replaced when the bottom line doesn't line up they were all hourly or salary. Things are great when they're great but when the stock price drops so does the need for overhead which is salary employees

Dealerships are too much favorites… dealerships they don’t like you if you diagnose right. They what you start recommend most expensive parts, when you diagnose right in first time it less money for them that’s why when they know customer is buyer they give someone who start recommending most expensive part. That’s why you are not their favorite guy but still they keep you because when someone having several time comeback they sign you and you fix it. That’s why does guys make more hours spending less time and you spend more time fix it quicker and no hours may be one hour

@@michaelmcgregor3108 AliExpress!! 🤣 I mean the manufacturers are putting junk on their cars from the get-go so why should mechanics be responsible? I've seen hundreds of vehicles with destroyed engines because the manufacturer put in a plastic oil pickup tube instead of a metal one. They only care if it lasts until it's out of warranty... And even sometimes they'll take the hit for a warranty work if the numbers are in their favor! Complete scumbags running these companies.
@williamcook2499Ай бұрын
@michaelmcgregor3108 you don't know what to buy? Warranty is regardless and the extra for the better... is only for the customer.... offer them the best you can get and the supplier pays for the labor. (Customer is covered, your labor is double and your Tech is paid!) And that's really so.ethi g that is required! If the part is junk... the diagnosis of that bad part.... the time that shop is dealing with shit parts.....ect.
