Great stuff! Happy to see 2 intelligent, knowledgeable engineers discussing this. Lots of details without a lot of blather is also refreshing, and especially a CEO who knows what he's talking about. I like these guys. Really glad the namesake of this channel wasn't there. Thanks. SAE has a long history of slowly doing things by committees, ending up with ridiculous backward looking compromises, usually to the detriment of everyone. A recent relevant example is the NACS charging plug. The SAE spent years of meetings developing an expensive, unwieldy, large, heavy and klutzy charging plug. Some guy decided to do better (Elon) and just did it; and then "gave" it to them. It still took over a year for the SAE to accept and use the "gift".

Very curious about how the vehicle determines the proper road speed in a given situation. If the road is clear, no other vehicles would it maintain the posted speed limit?

Tesla FSD works up to 90mph on Highways. WAYMO and others CANT even use Highways to do DIRECT routes to Destination. Tesla FSD works ANYWHERE you drop a PIN.

tbh, I feel like an open source universal autonomous vehicle driving solution is better than rigging up custom vehicles. Let cars remain manual while also providing a cheap solution to autonomous driving.

the undertone is if there is an area for autonomous vehicles only, that communicate with each other, all of the what if decisions are greatly reduced, that is taking human driver off the roads.

Good to see you talking about sensors as most people think that self driving vehicles are only about software. Also good that you covered some of the limitations of these sensors due to environmental limitations eg. Heavy rain, fog, bright sun light, falling snow and snow blankets on the road. With these limitations, it’s never going to be possible to have autonomous vehicles that can drive in all the above environmental conditions.

Interesting and a good look at something non-Tesla to see how other companies are intergrating LIDAR, RADAR and visual cameras to solve the puzzle. Elon's is not the only answer. Also interesting to hear about how the use cases have changed quite a bit since the earlier days. That’s something that most people don’t take into account.
@MrQuay035 ай бұрын
There are pros and cons with all systems. Given all the Lidars, radars, cameras, it's easier to solve the problem up to some point. But trade offs are cost, more point of failures, technical like disagreement between sensors, etc.. Tesla's solution is way cheaper but much harder to get working. The trade offs are obviously no accurate distance sensing, can't see in blind spots, and fully dependent on neural nets.

Mind boggling all the radar and lidar plus the cameras that are needed.. It must be some sort of miracle that my Tesla car can drive me for hours with out all the other crap and 8 cheap cameras probably cost less than $5.00 each. It is nice to see other companies working on solutions.

I wonder if they have looked into licensing Tesla FSD--might be straightforward to add the required cameras and HW4 and be ready to roll...
@elvinthalund51935 ай бұрын
It's definitely not straightforward today. 1. You can't retrofit HW4 in a Tesla. 2. The CyberTruck still have no FSD. So, FSD is not in a state to easily adopt yet.

Fun video for sure but man, this will never be a sustainable way to achieve autonomy. Buy a car, spend all that money on the sensor fleet, map every inch of the road you are going to diving on, keep mapping data concurrent with any changes to the roads, code everything that can happen, have tele operators and the list goes on. Seeing this and owning a Tesla with FSD shows who's the leader and which approach is going to make money. The smoothness of the dive on FSD is 10 times better than what I am seeing in this video (jittery steering wheel). I would be shocked if this company is still around in 2 years.
