What 3Words, brilliant! I can't tell you how often, as a member of the NSW State Emergency Service, I've needed more than just an address or something other than an 8 figure grid reference. Try navigating a flood boat through a town where every landmark is underwater, looking for an address you can't identify and you'll understand my enthusiasm.

Great video thanks Robert. I searched and watched more on autonomy and seems like such a great movement. The opening speech by Ross Douglas was interesting, he makes a good point about making the right decisions now though, with his example of how wrong It would be for everyone to use free autonomous cars to shop and buy products from amazon and Google while they travel (when the companies pay no local tax, while the cars drive past empty local shops) .. Also that if we don't sort out car sharing we will just have the same numbers of cars driving around empty to avoid paying for parking... I like his vision for last mile solutions of walking and cycling more.. Plus his focus on reducing pollution and congestion and a nod to Paris for leading against climate change.

When people who ride them wear the right safety gear, pay Road tax, and have the correct lights and signals or actually bother to learn hand signals which the entire nation seems to have forgot the meaning of even though they are part of the Highway Code.

I was fast forwarding - Ah the Solowheel was actually mentioned. It's good because some of the early videos of Solowheel were in Paris or thereabouts. The single wheel EV will never go away because that is still the best idea yet. You ride in-line which means you lean as you turn, it's self-balancing forward and back but you're responsible for everything else. Just like a bicycle you can't ride it without learning first, but once learned you can't forget how to ride it.

UK law just hasn't kept up, none of the things you rode or looked at could be used in the UK. You can't use them on the roads and you can't use them on the pavements. The same issues the Segway faced are still going to be faced by these. Interesting to see Norway has such a large percentage of EV's sold. Good for them.
@jurivlk54337 жыл бұрын
Andy P : France is less stupid. These electric vehicles fall under no legislation and are hence tolarated. By the way, a state that forbids everything that is not explicitly allowed is also called dictatorship. Maybe Iraq should free Britain.
@FuzzyScaredyCat7 жыл бұрын
It's not that they aren't explicitly allowed in law, it's that they don't meet things like lighting reulations for vehicles etc. They are forbidden for not meeting the requirements for a motorised vehicle to be used on the roads. Motorised vehicles aren't allowed on pavements in the UK which is why they can't be used there. The law being slow to adapt is the issue, not that we have a dictatorship. There's also the matter of insurance. It needs to be addressed but it's not as simple as it first looks.
@jurivlk54337 жыл бұрын
Andy P: In other countries they are allowed. So it is not very complicated. It's just a paternalistic attitude that wants to forbid everything that is fun. Maybe Britain would have less drinking problems if it would not forbid everything. Alcoholism is far more costly than some broken arms once in a while. And regulating to put some lights on it when driving at night, isn't rocket science either. Concerning other regulations, Britain is far more permissive: Have you seen the state of your falling apart railway system or the disgusting, never maintained water supplies?
@eriklevin84477 жыл бұрын
For well over decade I have been saying Segway is the future of personal transport, but of course they are illegal. Have used them overseas a few times and absolutely amazing short distance city transport. Much better than a bicycle, but well suited for use on bicycle paths.

Hats off to the Norwegians. They're doing something that is helping the world more than it is helping themselves. In the long-term, of course, what helps you helps the world, but very rarely do politicians, and the majority who vote them into power, see/ understand that.

@morosis827 жыл бұрын
That's easy. The river is easily wider than 3 metres, so each side will have a unique address. Also in the centre of the river will have it's own address. Each car lane over the bridge will have their own address sequence (assuming they run with the grid), as they are also more than 3 metres wide.

Hey, finally a mention of Canada! It's one thing I've always wondered. Often you'll talk about these long road trips across Britain, but Canada is huge, and I don't see electric cars becoming mainsream here if you can't drive from Calgary to Winnipeg, never mind across country.

I think my main concern is the time. Most of my family is in Sask, and that 8 hr drive is already interminable, but then to add the wait for a car to charge? I know charging times and stuff are constantly improving, I just personally don't think it's quite there yet to make such an endeavor anything but a hassle. Inner city though, fine, it's just the cross country road trips that give me pause.

I really enjoyed watching this episode, lots of interesting concepts and technology. Why would you need the 3 word addressing scheme when you could scan your phone, or prebook on your phone or use some smart token or barcode? The address thing sounds good when you don't have a phone but it doesn't really help identify other locations, sounds like you'd still need a smart device to decipher the names of those locations and in which case you could simply flag them and use personalised monikers for them.

I liked this episode very good. But all this stuff is what I have been talking about for years. The problem we have in the UK is that we are not allowed to use any of it legally. The French are way ahead on this, you can even use a 28 mph electric bicycle and you don't need insurance, just a small tag to indicate that it's a powerful bicycle, and you can use the cycle lanes and ways. In the UK anything that has two wheels and is powered by an electric motor except a bicycle, has to be registered as a moped this includes all electric scooters and even skate boards. I even hassled the DPT Trans about this but their stance is clear, if it has two wheels or more and is powered by an electric motor regardless of how powerful that motor is, it must be registered as a moped or motorcycle. I own a 1000W scooter it manages to go around 20 mph max, it has to be insured, registered and I have to have a motorcycle licence to ride it. The law in the UK needs to change to allow these small personal machines. Many people use them on the roads illegally now, but all it take is one cop who is eager and you could lose your license for riding one if you don't have all above.

@Phoen1x8837 жыл бұрын
Cumbersome to work with. Any decent accuracy requires lots of digits.
@nicolascarnot48577 жыл бұрын
It's a lot easier to remember 3 words than an 8 or 10 digit number. Long/Lat works fine, particularly for large scale, but compared to 3 Words, it takes a lot of skill to use. I teach map and compass navigation for the NSW State Emergency Service, but If 3 words can get me to within 3 metres of my destination, I'm all for it.

They're saying there is insufficient availability of power there. I'm assuming there are large stretches without any power at all. So, a solution to that is dropping in solar/wind and batteries. The solar/wind don't provide enough power to rapidly charge a vehicle but the batteries solve that problem: the solar/wind continuously charge the batteries and when you need to rapidly charge you charge from the batteries.
