Episode 117
Make your 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 Ford Galaxie handle better.
Today, we will be dealing with making a street Galaxie handle using parts that are available now.
I will be concentrating on the 1960 to 64 Galaxies as they are the ones in most need of help.
Let hit the biggest problems first
Front suspension:
1963 and 1964
The offset bolt. Honestly the one thing that will make a 1963-64 Galaxie handle better is to lose that offset bolt.
The offset bolt induces:
• Darting under hard braking or uneven pavement (bump steer)
• wandering at higher speeds
• Pucker when the owner has either
There are two ways to cure this:
bornagainclassics.com/products...
• One is the same mod used on Police and Taxi applications back in the day. The mod got rid of the offset arm and replaced it with an offset bushing removing the funky feeling Born Again Classics can modify your originals or you can buy a set from them.
budsclassiccars.com/
• Use Bud’s Classic Car tie rod stabilizer bar (if the front end is fresh).
Either of these will make the issues go away.
Suspension deflections
Urethane up front? No.
• No one makes a urethane kit for the 1960-64 Galxies.
• Urethane in those areas gets squeaky.
Stock
• The only way to make the deflection on the bushings better is to locate a ‘60-61 set of A-Arms and trade them out for the stock arms. The early arms have smaller bushings and therefore less deflection.
Tubular
This is one place I consider tubular a-arms. Places like Fatman Fabricators offer a kit to enhance the caster and camber settings that were not present in the original parts. Because power steering was not as big a thing in the early ‘60s Ford usually put larger steering wheels and zero caster in the cars-and not much prevision for adding caster.
www.fatmanfab.com/
Sway Bars
Simple and sweet run a 1 inch front and a 7/8 rear with urethane bushings. The only place that carries the rear bar is Quickor.
quickorgarage.com/
Shocks
I recommend using a non gas shock, though I am pretty excited about the Ride Tech HQ series fully adjustable shocks; we are looking at adding these to our ‘63 as a test.
www.qa1.net/
www.ridetech.com/
Front HQ Series Shock - T-bar to Stud - 5.25″ Stroke: 22159846
Air ride
could make for an interesting ride when combined with the Fatman Fab arms. I would go with Ride Tech for this They offer an air ride with a cool four link rear for the 1960-64 Galaxie.
Suspension deflections
• The only way to make the deflection on the bushings better is to locate a ‘60-61 set of A-Arms and trade them out for the stock arms. The early arms have smaller bushings and therefore less deflection.
Lowering
• Out back do it right, get a set of leaf springs done to drop the rear axle. Lowering blocks will do the same job but will induce wheel hop. You want the axle as close to the centerline of the spring as possible.
• Drop spindle for the front or new lowering springs, just remember that your shock may be effected by a dramatic drop and have to be shorter. Fatman offers the spindles and that opens you up to bigger Wilwood brakes.
Brakes
• Many aftermarket kits are available we’ll be using one from Auto Krafters.
• You can also use '72- Torino/LTD II/'77-up Thunderbird/Cougar. These spindles can have camber issues. BUT! You can, when using the ‘72 Thunderbird 11.72 inch rotor combined with the right spindle
Galaxie 500 Manual Disc Brake Kit 1959-69 : DB1513M
www.autokrafters.com/p-12054-...
Chassis
You have the option of complete chassis. But like dead sticking an air plane that the gear won’t come down...this is going to hurt.
Frame swaps
Can you frame swap the later frames with the 1960-63 Galaxie. No. At least not without a lot of trouble, a gas axe and copious amounts of cash. The early frame and the 1965 and later frames have zero in common outside of name and make.

As the director of the Ford Galaxie Club of America for the last 27 years, and having been to many a show where there were high performance 427 and 406 Galaxies in the 1963 and 1964 year models, and owning a 1963 427 "R" code 2 door sedan, I have NEVER seen one that had straight shafts. I've also, due to curiosity checked out a decent number in recycle yards over the years, taxi cabs (2 I know of) and police cars (6 I know of) and NONE of them had straight shafts. As a matter of fact I scavenged the large concentric nuts off two police cars to use for modification back then. I am also the Mark Reynolds of Born Again Classics. I really appreciate the mention of our replacement kit here on this video. Say hi to Ron and Melody for me!

Yes please please please make a 65-67 Galaxie suspension video! There is so little info out there about modification, the only obvious solution is to give Hotchkis $5k and I would much rather modify the stock suspension. A particular problem is the lack of caster. The factory settings max out at 2 degrees. Also understeer. And wandering at high speed even after tightening everything and new bushings... the list goes on. Thanks in advance!!

I can tell you that using front shocks from a ‘90’s Dodge 3/4 ton van helps a TON!!! stiffer valving will help front dive a lot, almost eliminating it. The lower bar pin must be modified slightly.

👍Good job. I learned of the 63 rod to tie the cam bolts together. Thanks. As for "all geometry stays the same with dropped spindles". Scrub radius. Look what happens. It is grossly changed. Worse tjan wheel offset and tire diameter changes. I know that most people wont care that a pot hole might jerk the steering wheel when changing the scrub radius more than an inch.... They expect 5* of caster to help the jerk. JME. Thanks👍👍😎😎

I once saw an old magazine ad for the 1961 Galaxie. It bragged about how the car floated across the road even at top speed of 112mph, and then "when you throw on the anchor this thing really stands on its nose." In other words, not enough damping to have good control and pro-dive geometry to make you think you're stopping harder than you are. Yeah, they need some help to mix safely with modern traffic.

The Country Sedan handles night and day better. The car feels much more solid and responsive on the road. Going around corners always felt like the rear end of the car could possible switch places with the front end if I took it too aggressive. Not that I am going to be road coursing. It just feel better. Highly recommend.

Addco has them also. I found out the hard way that if you do the front lower control arm mount modification there is not room for the Addco 1" front sway bar. The front of the control arm is moved up and there is not room for the sway bar arch to clear it . Even if you could get it mounted there is not room for the bar to twist as they need to. Very disappointing.

1968-72 Galaxie/LTD disc brake spindles/steering knuckles will swap right in. The only difference is you will need to change your outer tie rod end to one from the doner vehicle as the taper angle is different. May need new tires and rims as these are for 15" wheels. Also recommend New dual zone master cylinder and the proportioning valve from the donor car. I did this on my 64 XL 30 years ago, rebuilt and painted all parts $200.00 spent. And all FORD parts.

@@AutoRestoModI remember reading about the '65 427 Top Oiler in Car Review or similar. Was a featured car, till that point I thought all '65 were side olers. I knew on introduction in the 63½, 427 were top oilers. Those were still running the streets when first got my license in '66. I can't argue the Galaxie front ends, they held up well enough for first 10 years(sold mine in '74). No doubt History has proven them less than durable. Few early front ends are as good as we remember. My '69 Torino went from being best driving car on street, to akin to a field truck. All new components, fiddling with caster(thank you) and adding P/S mostly cured it, now fun to drive.

The photo with the yellow Galaxie......it's a young couple eloping without the father's knowledge (that's him with his head out the window in the upper right corner of the picture).

I know, but who climbs a ladder like that? And what 20 year old male is going to be able to afford a Galaxie....AND, if he has THAT much money, wouldn't he be "connected" if you know what I mean...sooo many questions...

I'd recommend getting the Galaxie assembly manuals from Auto Krafters. They have a good show of that in the electrical section.

No need to use lowering blocks , most 60s Fords already have flattened out rear leaf springs.

Hey Mr. Ford. I have a 63 Galaxie Convertible, and tons of questions! I *THINK* I remember you saying in one video that you'd be willing to entertain some dumb questions in a facetime, if the owner of the dumb questions was willing to contribute to your Pateron. Is that accurate, or am I remembering incorrectly?

I put Addco front and rear sway bars on my 71 Galaxie 500 White Lighting replica and it REALLY helped make the car handle way better. The car stayed very flat in turns and made the handling more neutral, the front end didn't just plow and push anymore.

My 64 does OK, could be better, but I have done several low buck mods...idler arm tapered bearing kit,..., disk brakes, spindle and tie rod ends off a 1973 mercury marquis,.., 1978 zepher manual disk master cylinder,..., KYB gas-ajust front shocks,...,,urethane sway bar bushings,.., front spring spacers,..., 15x8 wheels,...,rear sway bar from 1990 F150,..., rear air shocks. The car is good as long as you keep it smooth, sharp corners throw the alignment off, and big bumps can turn into a thrill ride...390 with 1963 427 heads could use MUCH better handling!
