I'm at this point in my project so thanks for the info. Fortunately I don't have deep scratches or high expectations. After the oven cleaner and a good rinse I used Mothers aluminum polish and produced a nice shine with not a lot of effort. Nice collection of trolls by the way

@@AutoRestoMod Great info on using Easy Off and the sanding... I got a ton of original trim on my 71' Galaxie500 that will need to be cleaned, no repo parts for 71'/72'' Galaxie500-LTD and most likely never :( But did a lot of collecting trim back in the day so I have plenty of old trim for about 3 cars :)

I removed the anodizing from a set of windshield moldings. They are easy to work on when removed. I used several grades of wet sandpaper, it took me most of an afternoon to do the 4 moldings. When they were finished, I polished them by hand with rubbing compound, then a couple of coats of wax. That was several years ago, they still look great. I didn't need to poison myself with that spray acid stuff, and wouldn't recommend it for anyone with respiratory sensitivity.
@AutoRestoMod3 жыл бұрын
I wear a respirator when using that stuff. And agree on the respiratory sensitivity.

Those big aluminum "Razor" Grilles on the old classic Full Size Jeeps are also anodized and they also happen to look extremely aggressive when cleaned up and polished, On those if your doing the Grille and headlight trim I recommend going in behind it and repainting behind it with a nice dark flat black, can also hide a couple auxiliary lights behind the grille in a couple original openings...It used the original Kaiser body panels through ALL the years of full size Jeeps, you can go forwards or backwards in look on those!

I just completely effed up a very expensive piece of aluminum trim. It was about the last step in a 2 year restoration. It's the big wide lower qtr piece off a 1972 Monte. I sanded right through the coating down to bare aluminum. Now I just cannot get it to shine.

Hate to hear that! I'd recommend finding a shop that does anodized coatings and trim repair.

So how long do you leave the oven cleaner on for? I don't want to wreck the trim
@AutoRestoMod2 жыл бұрын
We generally check the part every 5 to 10 minutes. the nice thing is you can wash it off, let it dry and reapply if it isn't enough. It will depend a great deal on the quality of the metal substrate as to how much damage the oven cleaner will do.

I'm halfway through refinishing all the Ranger trim on my F100. I worked really hard at it for several weeks, then took a 3 year break while I got married, moved, renovated, and had babies. But I'm hopefully going to start back soon. I'm halfway through the sanding, but I must say, I learned some really good techniques and tricks watching your video. I was also glad to learn it's not best to spray it with clearcoat. Question: how often do you have to polish it with Gibbs oil?
@AutoRestoMod5 жыл бұрын
I've had the Gibbs on the wagon for about 6 months and it need a re-application.

How would I repaint the buckets exactly as they were as well as the grille? The black lines and all that.
@AutoRestoMod3 жыл бұрын
Tape them off is about as close as you can get. Use the plastic fine line tape for rounding corners. For home use, I'd use Rustoleum semi gloss black.

So what does it take to re anodize a piece of aluminum like that? is that something I can do or does a professional have to do it

I'd say that it really should be handled by a pro. most of the parts are pretty large to be done in the home garage.

You might want to try a Bonny Doon forming hammer from Rio Grande. The head is interchangeable and they made of urethane. There is no short cut to polishing aluminum or stainless. It's important to keep grit out of the paper and the surface. You need a bucket or sink to get clean water when you rinse.

When taking dents out of trim, less is more, you need to sneak up on the dent removal. I’m conflicted on the use of clear on this stuff. If it’s a museum piece, maybe. But if it’s gonna be a driver it’s gonna get scratched.
@AutoRestoMod5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I snaek up on them and scare'um. LOL I'd rather have the option of quickly getting at the problem which is why I use Gibbs. And if I am going to do a Concours car, I'll have the plating redone.
