To anyone watching this now: Scott Drake does have reproduction spindles available for 65-66 mustangs, I had the issue described with a spun race and I had to replace my LF spindle. It was a great fit and solved the bearing play

Just came in from the garage pulling my 68 Fairlane coils. I have done at least 10 of these on Torinos and Fairlanes and never had an issue. Today I did have an incident with a two hook compressor. I pulled the coil and carried it two handed using my palms on either side of the coil and laid it on a heavy moving blanket. The blanket is good for absorbing energy if you wrap it over the coil while unscrewing the compressor. The second I laid the coil gently on the blanket the compressor hooks slipped. The spring did not shoot anywhere nor did it launch compressor parts. It did blast a cloud of rust and brittle isolator (so I see why you want to wear glasses doing this). The reason I am writing is that in this video the spring is carried from the end by the compressor and I also saw hands inside the coils. If this let go ALL the force of that spring will travel longitudinally. You really want nothing in line with the force's travel. I was mostly unharmed, my thumb took some of the coil travel and hurts but I think my intentional handling of the spring helped me not be hurt. Most of all WEAR GLOVES. I'd have gotten wrecked without them

I enjoyed this video because you were back to doing work that I might need to do soon. So, thank you for that. I do hope that you video the repairs to the shock tower. I'm very interested in watching that repair. Especially if you repair the current shock tower. Replacing the shock tower is not as interesting.

I'd be interested in seeing you repair it. I too have removed the springs from one of these, same tool. I did however secure the spring with a length of chain to keep it in the same county as the car and out of my face. Have you considered cleaning it up, fitting some angle iron and weld it ?? I'm option 2 guy myself, I'd bring in the 16lb sledge and knock it back the then drill the ends of the crack and weld that dude and grind it flat. Cheers gentlemen. Good job as always!!! Brian

Excellent video, right to the point. What size was that wrench you used to unbolt the upper Arm ? I know I don't have one, but with both sides of my Torino about to get done, it's wise that I buy one.

Is it possible to remove/replace the spindle without removing the coil spring? Or compressing the coil without physically removing it from the suspension?

No lie, Jeff and Cam are THE cutest couple in the auto-restoration KZbin video space, hands down. And I think it’s great nobody talks shit about the age difference or their lifestyle/choices. Do whatever makes you happy, I always say. These two are a perfect yin-yang couple, and I bet they squeeze the juice out of every moment (no pun intended).

From my angle, the caster is very negative, meaning the centerline of the spindle pivot points (ball joints) tilts forward. This is what causes the steering to lose its self-centering function. The more positive caster, the more the steering tries to centralize as the car rolls forward. That bulge and crack in the tower causes NEGATIVE caster.

i vote for showing how to do the repair. since this is a Ford. i would tell Cam to bring the biggest sledge hammer form work. just kidding. however they have proven to be a great tool for stress relief. the more tips that you guys show use the better. we need to keep more of these old Fords on the road.

IF you raise the car up a few inches you could avoid this. The spring coil is not as compressed. But you can struggle with it just about every time no matter how precise you get it. Great instructional video. However. Thanks. To save time use impact. If you have one. Its not recommended to use one of course. So you didn't get that from me. Save time or Save yourself! Your choice.

jeff, when removing the spring, is it best/easiest to remove that spring tower plate (the one with the bump stop that covers the top portion of the sprng ) so you can get at the whole spring better ? No problem with that, correct ? Thanks

@@AutoRestoMod- Hey Jeff ,I cant remove the inner shock tower cover. Unfortunately, the nuts on each bolt, the bolt spins so nuts wont come off. I can still get the spring out with them in place yes? My plan is to compress, remove upper control arm, decompress, put in new spring (compressed) put in new control arm, decompress new spring. Does that sound like it will work or must that cover come off?

Spring compressor, bah humbug. Just before pulling the spindle, place a 2x6 under the lower arm. lower the car until the lower arm is 1/2" from the 2x6. Remove the nuts from both of the bushings. turn the nuts over and replace on the bushings 1/16" short of being flush. Using a 2-5 lbs brass hammer [5lbs] in one smooth hit, smack the piss out of the lower ball-joints nut. BOOM!!! Usually they both pop loose. If not... Have hammer, smack the other one. It may be necessary to raise the car for the 1/2"- 2x6 clearance. By only having a 1/2" clearance the most the arms can spread is, well a 1/2". As most every car made requires a min of a 2" separation [more like 4"] for the spring to come out, your good. By elevating the lower A-frame 1/2" gives you a shitton of spring tension. The hammers impact is multiplied. The release of one bolt often jars the the other. Lower the car until the nuts have a gap between the arm. Remove the nuts. Afterwords slowly jack up the car to release the spring tension. The spring will fall not shoot out. If you try it, I DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU FALLOW THE BABBLING'S OF THIS LOOSE KZbin NUT, but if you did, you might find it's safer and easier. Next year I'll tell you how to change drum breaks with no, 0, nada tool one. Not joking. I've won bets doing it.
