Legend has it... That the initial performance of the p34 in 76 put some of the teams back on their heels. Ferrari reportedly negotiated and purchased all of the production time from Goodyear that manufactured the 10" front tires. Thus destroying any future development for upcoming 77 season. So Tyrell had to run 1976 tires on the front and 1977 tires on the back. They could never get the car to handle again even after moving the front tires out 6" on both sides, destroying the drag reduction altogether. Legend has it,,, Ferrari being unscrupulous.

Huge fan of the Tyrrell P34. I race slot cars for fun and have a large collection of them. There was 1/32 slot car versions made in Spain and Mexico in the late 70's. I have well over a dozen, all different, a couple worth serious coin, like the Banco Occidental version. Scalextric also did a few versions of the March (I have 3). The Williams was never created as a slot car, although one enthusiast did make his own. Two years ago, Scalextric did a new box set of the Belgian Grand Prix winners

I kinda wish the FIA would give F1 teams options between a set of car concepts and technical regulations that are all made to be fairly even in performance! That would make the technical side of the sport so much more interesting, and we would get to see so many more unique designs battle each other! Having a set of regulations with 6 wheels would be seriously awesome! And maybe a set of regs that focuses on ground effects with a suction-fan, but with minimum to no external pieces to create downforce externally. And perhaps also a more traditional concept without ground effects and crazy external aero! I just wanna see F1 in the shape it was in back in the 1970s where every car looked massively different in shape and size, and with more open regulations that allowed teams to try out things such as 6-wheelers or decide what sort of engine concept to go for, some with and some without turbochargers, and so on! We need to see F1 back in it's glory days of technical creativity and tough battles!

My understanding has always been that there was no ban on 4 wheel drive cars but rather there was a restriction introduced very late for the start of the 1982 season on the number of tyres that constituted a "full car set" to four tyres meaning that Williams could build their car but they couldn't shoe it.

It was banned in for 1983 onwards, mainly due to the ongoing war between the Manufacturers and Privateers. Along with ground effect, the manufacturer teams see it as a way for the privateers to gain an advantage through innovation instead of engineering better engines. Yes, at 7:12 - because "the teams" (FOCA) unanimously requested the ban. Although Chrysler built only 500 copies of each with the 426 Hemi to meet NASCAR's homologation rules; they also built-I believe-2000 copies of each with the 440 six-pack (3x2bbl), also sold at dealers. While it was officially banned with the 426 Hemi in 1971 (it was legal with a small block), Buddy Baker in a "transmission test" at Talladega set the closed course record over 200. mph. Search KZbin for "The greatest racing EXPLOIT of all time!" (no quotes) and see why the Tyrrell P34 and Dodge Charger Daytona were the two most amazing cars of the 70's!

(DRS Zones FFS???? ... why not all the time?? Grooved tyres??? remember that?). My suggestion: (1) Give them the basic limits of maximum weight, length, width, height and engine size (2) Let them develop WTF they want after that. If they want fans, or 8 wheels, variable wings, or side skirts ... let them. Let's see what technology can really do. Let's go for it and see what shows up on the grid.

I might be wrong but water cooled brakes were never banned. They just became obsolete when the ruled changed about being able to top up fluids after the race before the cars got weighed. Once they couldnt do that the point of water cooled brakes made no sense as the 'water reservoirs' couldnt be emptied/dumped at the first corner. Making it ballast in the wrong place on the car plus there was no way to have a water tank big enough to last the race.

I disagree with your conclusion that the FIA naturally disagreed with it. For a start, I'm pretty sure this happened when the governing body was the FIA's predecessor, the FISA. Secondly, the end of 1982 saw a complete revamp of the regulations, which - whatever the FIA haters say - was done in coordination with the teams. The biggest concerns at that time related to safety and it was probably the first tranche of rules to attempt to _slow the cars down,_ something everyone agreed with. This was in response to the horrendous crashed which claimed the lives of Gilles Villeneuve and Riccardo Paletti and ended Didier Pironi's career.
