It had to do with when Gordon Murray was working at Brabham (I believe) but he designed a car purely for speed and close second was reliability thus the gap they opened up was enough to do a pit stop (essentially refresh the car) and then go back out and rip around some more. Ferrari would go on to use a very similar race strategy in the early 2000s by way of shear pace over anything to win races.

And remember, both Williams and March built cars with four rear tires. The theory was to eliminate the huge rear tires and use four smaller tires to keep the same contact patch without the aero penalty. Great story, John !

the March was just a mock-up though. Williams were the closet to running a 6 wheeler.
@66PHILB
@66PHILB 3 жыл бұрын
@@dr2stroke611 No the 2-4-0 was intended as a race car. During the design stage, Wayne Eckersley's custom transmission case looked too pricey so he was told to rub out a lot of the expensive looking strengthening ribs. When the car was first tested, the case flexed, the crownwheels and pinions lost alignment and the transmission broke. March were on a tight budget plus they were making production F1 cars as well as running the factory team so the concept was pushed to the back burner. Ironically it was March's financially most successful car because Scalextric produced a slot-car model and it sold like hot cakes! The 2-4-0 was their regular 761 or 771 fitted with the 4 wheel rear end so the car was converted back to a 4-wheeler and raced. Roy Lane used the 6-wheeler in the British Hillclimb Championship with some success and the work he and Hewland did on the March fed into Williams' later research for the FW07D & FW08B.

A friend of my family was the team photographer for Williams when they were at Station Rd in Didcot. I remember the evening (actually 2am) when he was called to the factory to do the RACMSA registration photos for the 6 wheeler.. He phoned my Dad to be his assistant that night. At breakfast, my Dad just said to me - You will not believe what the new car looks like. Frank took Don's photos (Studio Atlanta, Didcot) to the RAC first thing in the morning, got it registered and then Patrick and the team rolled it out for testing at Silverstone at about 10am. Patrick was telling dad that his theory was that, by reducing the frontal area, he could get 20mph extra on the straights. What he was explaining was that he wanted to see in testing what it would be like in corners. He was expecting ground effects to be better due to the longer wheelbase, but that the wheelbase would affect turn-in.

Interestingly enough there were 3 other 6 wheeled F1 prototypes that never ended up racing. The March 2-4-0 and Williams FW08B had the extra wheels at the rear of the car and even Ferrari experimented with the 312T6 where the extra wheels were also at the rear, but next to each other like on a dually truck.

I said, “No, Ford F-250s and F-350s exist.” They tried to convince me that the F-150 is the only truck that exists. They denied me pointing out all the Ram and Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500s existing. California is full of idiots.

I was in a San Fernando chapter of the Civil Air Patrol who got asked to usher for the 1977 Long Beach Grand Prix. I was assigned to a set of bleachers at the inside of turn one. Got to see Mario Andretti in his JPL Lotus AND both of the P34s. What an amazing day for a 16 year old. Incidentally Mario led the race for most of the day. Then on last lap his JPL Lotus lost 4lbs of air pressure in a front tire. This allowed the eventual winner to pass. I was bummed. *edit: time and memory are not always kind partners. I went and checked, Mario won that day, and its coming clear that it was the 4lb pressure loss that allowed Mario to make his pass on the last lap. Actually found a video of the race, wow, surreal. **2nd edit. That race was LOUD! Echoing off the buildings in Long Beach. I've been to Metallica shows and they don't even come close to how loud these cars were.

Great piece of historical information, I loved that car and watched it race at Watkins.. John stated that Tyrrell needed new drivers after their driver quite in 1971. In actuality, Ken Tyrrell, owner of Tyrrell Racing needed two new drivers for 1974 because Jackie Stewart retired from driving at the end of 1973 and François Cevert was killed at the 1973 season finale in the United States. The team signed Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler. Tyrrell and Jackie Stewert won the 1969, 1971 and 1973 F1 championships.

I was a young GI, stationed in Germany, 1976 and managed to be at the old Nürburgring for the German Grand Prix. What a thrill to see Jody Schecter take 2nd in the Tyrell! It was only 2 or 3 yrs prior at Watkins Glen seeing him battle it out against Mark Donahue in the brutally fast 917 spiders in the Can Am series. Sadly Nikki Lauda (the come back kid) had his crash at this race. I have framed B&W 8 x12 prints of the Tyrells in pursuit behind the 911 safety car.

John Ficarra says "So I want to talk about one of my favourite race cars of all times", mean while I want to talk about one of my favourite guests on this show of all times,,,,John Ficarra no doubts, in my opinion he's a great story teller and a treasure trove of information on formula one racing.

I've always loved the P34 ever since I saw pictures of it in car magazines in the early 80's. I love the Covini C6W as well. I also love the Mercedes G63 AMG 6X6. Thanks.

I saw the engineering drawings for this 6 wheeler in the off season prior to it's launch. Northern hemisphere off season. I was working for a race car designer in New Zealand who was sent a copy for his opinion and input... He came into our smoko room and said "Ok boys, can you keep a secret", and unrolled a set of plans for this amazing looking 6 wheeled race car. We were all gob smacked... I think I was 17 years old back then... George Begg. Formula 5000 designer and constructor...

The P34 is my all time favourite F1 car. It was the car that actually got me interested in F1 back then - because it was unique. The theory that certain rival teams may have felt threatened enough to sabotage it to me are quite plausible. As you say John we will never see such outside-the-box thinking in F1 ever again. Thanks so much for a brilliant video. Just subscribed.

So something else that also explains Goodyear not wanting to develop the tires, 1976 Goodyear basically had F1 to themselves. 1977, Michelin decides to come back into F1 with Renault and then get bigger as the years go on. Goodyear doesn't want do develop tires for 1 team when now they have to fight for their tire dominance in F1

It was highly entertaining watching Ronnie Peterson wrestle it round Silverstone as it rapidly switched between understeer and oversteer. The description of how the wheelbase changed gives a good explanation for that.

Fantastic video John! Please do a video on Williams' F1 FW07D & FW08B 6 wheelers of 1981 & '82. There's a lot to say about their origin, the whole ground effect thing, the politics involved in it being outlawed and the fact the 4 wheel version of FW08 won the Drivers' championship in '82. Throw in a piece on the March 2-4-0 6 wheeler and its right up your 6-wheel alley!

You mean the one with a fan? That's a Brabham. Gordon Murray said that he knew about the loophole and already guess that that implementation was right on the edge of the regulation and though very effective during the race the system itself is very crude.

Nicely done! One interesting point: John said Tyrrell won the F1 championship in 1971 but I’m thinking, “what about 1973”? All these years I had failed to understand that even though Stewart won the driver’s championship in ‘71 and ‘73, Tyrrell only won the manufacturers title in 1971. Then I looked at the ‘72 season wondering why Jackie/Tyrrell missed that title. Stewart completely missed the ‘72 Belgian GP because of............gastritis. Turns out he was burning the candle SO hard in ‘71-‘72, racing so many cars all over the world, doing media stuff, etc that he kinda trashed his body. There is a great video of Stewart coming out of retirement for a few laps in ‘76 to drive a few laps in the six-wheeler - fun stuff!
