This car might be best daily drivable sports car in terms of driving experience I have ever driven or owned tbh..... Yes falls short in track but that's tells me Lotus will definitely make track version of it most likely "R" variant with an "S" being the mid point between them.... I was really torn between 981 Cayman GTS and this as best daily sports car I have ever driven, I choose this due to looks otherwise it will be the 981

Awesome honest review, and proper driving. This is the first Nordschleife review I watched of you, and didn't expect much.. thought you were probably going to drive like a beginner and over-praise the car, like a lot of reviewers do.. but I was positively surprised all around.

It's also a sort of necessity. There's no Toyota V6 married to a performance-based automatic transmission that would have fit in the Evora/Emira, and developing (or contracting) a DCT would have been prohibitively costly.

I think you've hit the point exactly. Lotus have spent years making track focused cars - and in the process lost millions because of their incredibly narrow customer base. Hardly anybody will use it for track days - and even then, not have the skills to drive at this speed. It's being marketed as an every day sports car with exotic looks that doesn't break the bank (almost) - and from this video, that's exactly what it is 👌🏼

Interesting re the lack of low torque, I have the 2GR-FE in my MR2 and there's a tone of low torque. Maybe a tune would rectify it.

Interesting results! I wonder if the fixed, sport suspension is just too stiff for those bumpy sections you mentioned. I could see that resulting in a loss of grip in some bumpy corners as the rear end skips across the pavement, resulting in snap oversteer. I would be interested in seeing you race the Lotus Emira V6 with the touring pack to see how it compares around the corners.

I have driven both the V6 and the AMG on a race in China. The AMG in China has a more powerful motor than the ones in the rest of the world (400hp and 480nm of torque) so with 8 gears it is much faster than the V6 plus it has a new rear subframe and the weight is lower in the car due to the AMG motor so it handles better(less snappy). When driving this car fast it is best to use the paddle shifts to get the best out of it on a windy road. By the way the rest of the world get a 360 hp variant. It is important to use 98 plus petrol in the AMG cars to get the best out of them.

Lotus themselves have said that the Emira is meant to be up against the GTS. Not the GT4 or GT4RS.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a more track focused version of this at some point, like we did with the Evora. (Unless they stop building it to make room on the factory floor for the Type 135 really soon.)

How would you compare it with a 981 GT4? I own one and I’ve been thinking about switching to an Emira, but I think the GT4 is a more raw and fun vehicle thanks

Great video. Some people don't agree with me but I think this car will be improved with the upcoming AMG engine. Also, for the track it really needs more downforce in the rear. A wing will benefit and it doesn't have to be big.

Being a V6 Exige owner, I must say I don't agree with your remark the V6 engine doesn't have torque down low. Compare this engine to a S65 in the E92 M3? That car doesn't have torque down low. I mostly drive mine in the mountain passes and the compressor gives this engine plenty of grunt down low coming out of hairpins. Sure, it pulls harder at the top but this engine is for sure not lazy down low! ;-)

@@solarflare2199 I am not sure what is "worth" for you. It's a supercharged engine, so you will not have crazy gains with just a remap, like in a turbocharged engine.

It's supercharged, there's little gains to be had from an ECU map alone. The boost level is fixed according to the pulley size.

I bet the 4 cylinders will be mich easier to tuned up, but also faster than the V6. It comes with a DCT unlike the single clutch of the AT of the V6 version. I ve never been able to do a 0 to 100 with the V6 under 5 seconds and it feels so underpowered vs what Lotus claims . Even a 718S with only 350 HP would be faster. The steering wheel feels nicer than the 718 but from a balance perspective, I do prefer the 718. The 718S with a tune would be a much cheaper car, and would outperform so easily the Emira on all the aspects such as price, handling, acceleration, depreciation. I was about to buy one but after 2 trials, I decided not to purchase it coming from a 718. PS: nice to hear the driver's feedback, but you are continuously talking and it would have been nice to consider a moment in the video to listening to the absolutely great sound coming from that supercharged V6.

Hard to judge, but Mercedes inline4 probably will be not so easy to tune, bc the engine has problems with airflow in this small engine compartment (heat). You can always get smaller compresor pulley for the V6. And Toyota reliabiality vs todays Merc.... :]

@@fredericberthou j ai acheté une C7 Z06 Z07 avec 4000 km au compteur, 660 cv et 885 Nm de couple. Meilleures acceleration qu une GT3RS et tourne seulement 4s moins vite au Nur qu une GT4RS. V8 6.2 litres compresseur, ca chante superbement bien, surequipée, interieur custom full alcantara et carbon, freins carbone ceramique, appendices aero et toit targa full carbon, suspension piloté arriere KW reglables en compressionet detente lente et rapide. Pour 110K euro, a ce prix je n aurais jamais pu avoir quelque chose de mieux que ça.

Slower than the GT4, sorry, but it's still a fast car, the chassis is good and the sound is good. The Porsche seems to be more connected, a better feeling of contact with the road, it gives the driver more confidence, and the chassis seems a little better, anyone who drives around and sees a lot of laps will know what I'm talking about.

Best track video yet! You can't really complain about the weight when you have a passenger that adds a lot of weight. Also were you running on a full tank of gas and what were your tire pressures. Also couldn't really tell why that oversteer happened. You said that there is no track down low so it couldn't have snapped loose other than you braked a little harder before the turn. Also tires couldn't have been hot enough in 2 minutes when it oversteered to give it optimal grip. Prove us wrong with by running a full true race lap time and we can then compare it to other car lap times. And a GT4 has a spoiler which adds to balance and grip so it doesn't get "rotation happy" like the Emira. If you put on an aftermarket JUBU spoiler on it and even with their upgraded suspension, splitter and diffuser, it will still be cheaper and faster than the starting price of a GT4

Wish they had made it turbo charged or better naturally aspirated. Can't stand that supercharger whines on a £70k+ car.

Definely it's a racing car, not a GT. If you are used with GTs, that explains why are you felling the Emira a little nasty on the curves and a "sense" of insecure. The fact is that Emira uses Ground Effect air flux and Also Side Pods, what gives a little sense of flying on the track, like the F3, 2 and 1, and other Formula's. It probably took from you the sense of limit and watching the video, you were very far from the limit on Emira. You could, for exemple, beat any of the cars that passed by you. I also realized that the corvette disappeared and we all know the corvette is a Skating board over wheels and it can't attack the curves without taking off from the ground. I have an Emira and I can assure you the gravity center is perfect as well. Let's do something different...come back to the track with the Emira and imagine you are in a type of Go-Kart with some updates. Try to feel the air passing inside the car and supporting your sides...trust a little more and push a little harder to the curves, then you will feel the difference! 👊

Why compare the Emira to the Cayman GT4… one is an out and out track car the other is a drivers car in the real world. The Lotus is also a $50,000 cheaper.

Manual gearboxes are not making sports cars better in general. It may involve the driver more, for sure but faster almost never.

True. For decades automatic transmission meant a loss of speed, yet with today's automatic transmission technology, it's nearly impossible to out shift the computer-controlled gearboxes.

Quartz watches are much better timepieces than mechanical watches. There is no point in even arguing this. And yet people routinely pay $10-15k or more for mechanical watches when they could easily have a “better” watch for $100. Same sht.

Modern manuals have to be gear ratio limited to meet emissions standards. If you had the money and engineering help you could improve the manual by changing gear ratios.

The cayman GT4 is destroying the Lotus for ALL except maybe the exotic style and price for options! Porsche there is no substitute! 20 Years old engine and manual for a beauty like the Lotus. Worst combo ever!
