The theory of it makes sense, or at least did when it was announced at sub £60k and was punching with the base spec Cayman S. Now that they've upped it to £80k it's up against a pretty nicely specced Cayman GTS and I just don't see many people looking at the V6 Emira, a specced Cayman GTS and the I4 Emira and going "I'll have the 4 cylinder for more or less the same money".

I also liked the variance in sound between comfort and sport mode. In the end though my head won the day and I got the Cayman GTS. The steering is not quite as crisp and the looks are not as exotic but.. The engine feels stronger (IMO), gearbox and drive ability are absolutely on par with Lotus plus it is far more useable but it’s the peace of mind (dealer network, residuals, build quality) that won me over. I am pleased with my decision but I do LOVE the Emira in my heart and if I was a bit more care free about such an investment that’s what I’d have bought.

On a dealer list for the Emira and they just called to tell me I can place my order now. It's a beautiful car that looks great, just not impressed with the motor, size of the footbox or interior and the exhaust sound does not make me grin. Oh well, time to call the dealer to take me off the list. Despite my feelings, I think Lotus has done a great job with this new design and I wish them success going forward.

Lotus makes some head scratching decisions. Most enthusiasts like their smaller displacement engines coupled with a manual and higher power cars coupled with a dct for maximum lap performance(for those that track), it seems they did the opposite with this car. Head-scratch*

it's kinda crazy to think that this stunning last stand sports car for Lotus, would be resolutely trounced in a race with the £36k MG X Power. I'm telling you, those MG boys have just killed off the era of the supercar, coz. like that villain said, in the INCREDIBLES , "if everyone's a 'super' then no one will be". In essence, MG have made 'supercar performance', accessible to all. You don't need some crazy, nuts looking, stupid expensive' Lambo to drop a sub 4 sec 0-60, now you just need a relatively cheap, electric hatchback. Pandora's box has been opened. There's no going back now.
@MrDead1975 Жыл бұрын
sports/supercars aren't just about 0-60 times, they are also about the handling, top end speed which your MG will lack + the additional sensory impacts such as noise/vibration which EVs do not have. no one will have a picture of an MG on the wall.
@misaelbarcia541 Жыл бұрын
@@MrDead1975Totally right. Just handling-wise, your average heavy electric SUV can't compare to a sports-tuned car meant to handle like on a track. Plus, I can't think of an actual car enthusiast wanting a Chinese electric SUV over a sports or super car say from Germany, Japan, Italy, etc. Electric cars may be faster, but so far they aren't as exciting as ICE cars.

They should have given the I-4 400 horsepower and the V-6 closer to 435. That would have made it more appealing and pulled more people from brands like Porsche.

Ironically, the parts that are most likely to give the owner any trouble in the future are the German bits. Not something you could have said 25 years ago. The Toyota V6 with manual gearbox is bulletproof.

If it wasn't for the weak Toyota gearbox, the manual V6 could be a lot more powerful and torque. As it stands both cars are compromised, but the V6 is more appealing.

I think Lotus should keep one model in their future range as petrol only, at least until every Lotus sales territory bans new petrol/diesel cars. I think going all electric across the entire range in a couple of years is a mistake because it will definitely affect future sales. People aren't buying EV's, the sale rates have nose dived across the world and until battery technology has improved and the price of EV's have come down, EV sales will continue to stagnate. Also synthetic fuel hybrids and Hydrogen combustion engines are going to take a big share of car sales in the future and EV's will be niche products not mainstream.

The AMG’s turbo is going to cook the backside of the trunk, and possibly the engine cover. Lotus should’ve gone the NA route, using the Camry’s 2.5L I4 or 3.5L V6, and tuning it for a 8k-9k redline…that would’ve differentiated the two versions and would’ve been more fitting of an ICE send off.

The I4 m139 definitely has potential to unlock more power at an affordable/easier method than the toyota v6. This along with the weight distribution in the i4 model makes it a more viable option over the v6. I'd love the i4 in a 6spd if it existed.

Reliable Toyota V6 with a manual or an undersized AMG inline 4 thats riddled with long term reliability problems with an automatic? Hm …

The price is high (currently £77k), but this is the First Edition - it's fully loaded. A lot of people are complaining that it was supposed to be £60k. It will be close to that in its basic form (without all the packs). Certainly whinging about £60k turning into £80k is bending things quite a long way. My guess would be abase model starting price of around £67k, which considering inflation is probably realistic. Comparing it to a Porsche GTS4.0 is a bit confusing. You can get a 718 for £75k but you wouldn't want to. I just tried a basic configuration with decent headlights, some nice seats and basic driver aids and my price went well in excess of £85k in a few clicks (easily done). Fully load one and you will be WAY north of that. Keep the Emira in its first edition guise in context. It will inevitably be priced according to where it sits in the market. If you think it's over priced then it isn't the car for you. If you think a Porsche is better then its an easy decision. More important are the DCT shift issues. Can that be sorted with a firmware/software upgrade? Is it flawed to start with? It will be interesting to see how Lotus work out the already apparent i4 niggles. Personally for me it might be too heavy; Lotus was always about light weight. I drove the V6 in automatic and it was a sluggish mess, who's get up and go had got up and gone. The combination of that gearbox and kerb weight is terrible. Acceptable for a GT tourer but not for a B road blaster. The rest of it works but there is no getting away from two major factors; weight and power delivery. I'm sure the Manual V6 is fine but unfortunatly I can't drive one of those (old war wound). Various reviews have said the i4 with the DCT box is a bit more lively. I will be test driving one soon with anticipation, but would I buy one? Only if the package actually works, the experience is engaging and it pulls away without feeling like I am towing a caravan.

The i4 also has an alluminium rear subframe that’s 12 kg lighter than the steel one on the V6. In reality, the difference in weight between the 2 engines is negligible
