Probably... But absolutely no different to other ridiculously overpriced SUVs... For example, on Autotrader right now you can buy a Range Rover D300 MHEV for £95,504 after discounts. The cheapest 3 year old, '21 plate D300 MHEV with only 28,800 miles is selling at £40,500 - a 42% retained value. Compare that to the BMW iX 50 - yours, brand new, for £90,360 after discounts. Again, the cheapest 3 year old, '71 plate iX 50 with 48,200 miles on the clock is selling at £53,475 - a 59% retained value, so WAY better than the Range Rover.

For all their focus on safety tech (which is laudable) the fact that they continue to go down the shitty Tesla route of a giant touchscreen for all controls is utterly and completely against the very fundamentals of safe driving i.e. having physical buttons and knobs for the most important and frequently used features. HVAC and audio should always be buttons and knobs - and if marques such as Volvo or BMW want to differentiate themselves from the lower tier marques they can use high-grade materials such as aluminum instead of plastic for the controls. I would never ever buy a car much less an overpriced luxury car which does not have proper controls. Get with the program Volvo!

@@peterharte88 the CO2 'breakeven' point for an EV vs the equivalent combustion-engined car is well known and dependent on the source of power generation in the country the vehicle is being used in. For example, in somewhere like Russia, with it's heavy dependence on coal-fired power generation, it would be around 77,000 miles. However, in a more 'environmentally forward-thinking' country like Norway, with its 98% clean hydro power generation, it's a mere 8,000 miles for parity. Fortunately, there's a rapid decline in coal-fired power stations - for example, in the UK, the last coal-fired power station, at Ratcliffe-on-Soar, is due to close in 3 weeks' time.

In the US, the base model is estimated to be less than 80k like the plug in xc90. Depreciation will probably bring it down to a firm 60 or 50k, which will make it an absolute steal for the tech and comfort

I should think all car companies should have a Human Machine Interface department that should run scenarios that require use of buttons. This trend of ultra minimalism is annoying. Even in computer companies like Apple and Microsoft who have tried to replace buttons with screens realized that sometimes you need those buttons and brought them back.

Clearly this EX90 has received 90% of the Volvos design and development budget as against the “new” XC90 which (astonishingly), has hardly changed at all. After all this time the XC90 deserves more than just a minor face lift.

Great review as always. At least this one has a driver display unlike the EX30. Volvo pride themselves on safety but ignored it with both those cars as far as driver interaction is concerned. Don’t forget mirror controls also on the screen

Rory? The Best Car reviews! I'll watch it even if the car means nothing to me! The EX90? I am sure it is an excellent vehicle but sadly another example of how the car industry lost the plot. It is irrelevant if electric appeals to me not: It is excruciatingly expensive (but in a world of leasing most people are probably just paying a deposit and a monthly payment that they can afford and after 3 years of chucking money away they press re-start ruin button and they go again) like almost everything nowadays besides a Dacia and another example of excessive weight and excessive stuff we just don't need but have to pay for it - I would to see an analysis of over 50k brand new car sales with a breakdown of what happens after 3 or 4 years... c'mon Rory bring this on!

Their imitation of Tesla is so ridiculous now that they're putting lives in danger, yet they claim to be a safety focused manufacturer. Putting lights under layers of screens is probably the silliest thing I've come across. Earlier this year, I was keen on buying the EX30, but this ridiculous interior (without any proper instrumentation) was a deal breaker and I went for a more sensible ICE vehicle instead.

I’m hoping for a bare essentials version, without the LiDAR, without moving parts in the headlights, without speakers everywhere. Just a big boxy comfortable and practical Volvo without all the complicated stuff that can and will go wrong (typically Chinese to have gadgets) How great could this car be with just simple reliable engineering. Oh, and therefor ultimately less pricy obviously.

Got the v6 version, bit sluggish but less issues than v8 or turbo. I absolutely love this car and I had many brands over the years. I'll bet it's better build than this volvo and will last another 10 years while this not so smart car will be in a dump after 10-15 years.

Again, the cheapest 3 year old, '71 plate iX 50 with 48,200 miles on the clock is selling at £53,475 - a 59% retained value, so actually WAY better than the Range Rover.

Such ashame. They make a wonderful looking car but ruin by putting nets in the seats. Makes the interior feel cheap. My 2011 s80 has lovely leather pockets adding the luxury feel of the car. Honestly how much more would airplane style pockets cost. Also that second row of seats should be electric aswell, hopefully they will added that into a face lift. It is impressive indeed But it’s all electric and that is a huge negative for me. All things considered it’s not going to save the planet and a half hr. to recharge while on a trip is one huge inconvenience. Then there’s the depreciation factor to consider. To sum it up EVs are a dumb idea to solve a problem that doesn’t really exist.
