I see them being squeezed into a fourth or fifth player in the market, and that’s being generous. The vision here seems off, the X40 is underspec’d to differentiate it from the X50. It’s hard to understand where this fits in the lineup. Cost of an X7, size of an X5, but with less trunk. Tech seems less than Mercedes. The IX3 makes sense, an electrified X3. This one is expensive and leaves little room in the lineup.

Nice review. The one thing I'd like to clear up though is that Rory is stating empty to full charging times for daily charging at home and complaining that it takes too long. That's not how it works. The iX has a WLTP range rating of 380 miles but people won't be driving it 380 miles every day. They come home at night and plug in and the battery is usually topped off in 2-3 hours. On the rare occasion that they do drive it down to nearly empty, there's no issue leaving the next morning with the battery at 70% or 80%, because there will most likely still be more range than needed for the day. If your daily commute is close to 380 miles, then yeah, maybe it's not the best vehicle for you - and maybe you should also consider moving closer to your work address!

@redbaron68052 жыл бұрын
@@alanjenkins1508 That perception is false. Lithium Ion batteries are rated for a specific number charging cycles. If this car was rated for 1500 charging cycles, it would go roughly 600,000 miles before the battery was getting wear to consider replacing it and retiring it from EV use. People's perception of what a charging cycle is however is often wrong. Charging the car from 60% to 80% each day is not a charging cycle. Charging the car 5x from 60% to 80% is a charging cycle. Same applies to charging the car 10x from 70% to 80% or 2x from 30% to 80%. The charging cycles are based on adding 1x the total capacity of the battery, regardless of how many times you charge it. Since Lithium Ion batteries don't have a memory effect, you can break each charging cycle into pretty much unlimited number of charging sessions.

But people need to bear in mind how far that 50% battery will get you. If it’s only 50-100 miles then that’s a concern on the charge time, but if it is 180 miles then you just don’t use that much. It’s the range in kilometre per hour of charging time (say 7kw) that matters.
@AutoTraderTV3 жыл бұрын
@@alanngli So why use such a big battery if you're not going to use it at least some of the time? The XDrive50 wouldn't need to exist with that logic. I think it's always preferable to go long distances with as small a battery as you can manage. If someone does have the need to go 380 miles regularly and was considering this car for that purpose, then the charge time of a large battery is going to be a concern. If it could do 380 miles on, say, an 85kwh battery instead of a 105kwh battery, that would be preferable as it would save you about 3 hours of charge time.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, but there's quite unexpected luxury with the idea of always leaving with full "tank" with home charging. Most of our driving comes from wife's commute (200km/day), so basically we visit fuel station 6 times a month with diesel. And as it's not on the normal route, it takes about 10-15 minutes to visit. So basically we use 60-90 minutes/month on fuel runs. As we only use car for longer trips about 10-15 times per year and need to charge only once per trip, we actually should save time with electric. And anyho us meatbags need those stops too, so it will be interesting to see how things pan out when our Enyaq 80 4x4 comes.

I personally commute by bicycle and motorcycle, so don't really need a car (I've got project RRC for V8 rumbles). But really save money too with home charging. 2€/100km vs 10 is quite delta. And with our 50tkm/year, it's like 4k/year on fuel alone. And as it's company car, I don't have any other expenses, unlike wife's current X1 which seems to break something expensive every year.
@christhompson46303 жыл бұрын
Depending on how a person drives and the capabilities of the car's battery/motors, it could still be cheaper even if there was a need to charge with a faster charger everyday. Autotrader/Rory reviewed a Hyundai EV and while driving said he was getting 5mi/kWh and still getting 3mi/kWh with the heater on full blast. Even at 40-45p/kWh it would still be possible to get a better price per mile than with diesel. Especially at the bloody ridiculous prices fuel is now. But, as you've said, it wouldn't be convenient. For most people once solid state battery technology matures and finds its way into the market, EV's will become a lot more practical even if charging at home is not feasible

Market share projections are always made for the segment that the product is aimed at. So 50% market share of fully electric vehicles is for the segment of the market that purchases luxury electric EV. At least that's how I interpret that statement. And this is a competitively priced car in the luxury ev segment.

Im really curious what happens with the Polyurethane if it’s parked for a few hours somewhere really hot with direct sunlight and then driven on a country road. All the bugs that get crushed in that part of the vehicle would than stick to the Polyurethane and „heal“ right in it right ? That could give a real mess.

Great review.. although you made a mistake at the end and called it an iX3. In any case, this is definitely better looking and much more refined than a model X .. and cost is similar, so I think it's reasonably priced. We got the brand new BMW iX during Christmas time 2021. It is our 4th BMW and we were excited to ride on it. On January 10 2022, the iX made its freeway debut. We would never have thought the first drive would have been a nightmare. My husband drove the iX fine until that moment- about 20 minutes on the freeway. A loud “Bang!” struck us frozen. At that moment, the bonnet hood smashed the front glass! My husband on the driver’s seat, and I next to him, found ourselves being entirely blindfolded by the bonnet hood and were entirely unable to see the traffic. It was a moment of fear, fear of losing our lives.

I am very convinced that it will make more sense to people in the next few years. It's a departure from previous generations of BMWs, but it is made to be a statement. While most fans of the brand are happy with their 2010s models, it cannot be denied that in a greater picture BMW simply played it too safe, was stepping back in terms of EVs and also in terms of design. Many current models, especially the 5 and 7 series didn't really age well. They were modern when they came out, but as a brand like BMW you need to be innovative, not just following current ideas. I see the 20s as a decade where BMW will redefine itself completely new, but that is necessary. It will offend people, but it will also get them new customers and save them in the long term. It's not all about 6 cylinder coupés, these times are over soon.
@juricakovac56673 жыл бұрын
the current 5 series (I would personally choose the one before the facelift) is one the most beautiful sedans in that segment ever, every proportion and line is spot on IMO, yes the design is restrained and conservative but that is what that segment of buyers want I agree with your point about bmw redefining itself but it is very dangerous to alienate your existing customers with the new design and hope future customers like it the problem is ,the way I see it, bmw itself doesn't know which design path to take for the future (unlike merc) and they are throwing all kinds of designs out there to see what sticks, there is no continuity in design in 2,2 gc,3,4,5,8 series and electric cars you already know how mercs will look in the future, just eqs but make it shorter and take away fancy expensive tech depending on the class I'm afraid that bmw in the quest to redefine itself will lose most if not all that made bmw so special in the eyes of millions
@magnustan8413 жыл бұрын
Agreed, pre-2015 BMW was incredibly boring in terms of exterior and interior design. From the 2017/2018 5 Series onwards, BMW basically said “we’re back” and now they’re smashing it in terms of interior functionality, luxury and performance. Back then, they only really did performance very well. The iX is actually a okay looker, but unfortunately BMW fans are some of the most passionate and the only that is BMW to them is anything that looks like an E46 M3…. It annoys me too, but we move on.
@TD12373 жыл бұрын
@@juricakovac5667 Definitely see where you're coming from. I still think it'll pay off in the end. I say thid because the fans upset with the design will probably get over it eventually. And then there's a *ton* of people, like myself, who only like BMW nowadays, ever since they've changed their design direction.
@magnustan8413 жыл бұрын
@@juricakovac5667 I don’t know about millions. That in itself may be millions, but there a millions more who think differently.
@Tej1323 жыл бұрын
I always associate BMW with sporty cars. And even if they make a SUV it's usually sportier handling than others. I think this design was a test to see the reaction of the public and there's not a safer way to test out new design is to make an SUV. because no matter how good or bad they look people will still buy them. And yes, it's ugly

@@vidpetrovic8907 Heavy cars take more effort to accelerate and stop, so you use more energy and you have firm up suspension to ensure the car is comfortable through bends, meaning you may slightly compromise on comfort. Cinema. Cinema. The entirety of the content is, “oh my god beautiful”. All the colors are rich. The greens of the nature blend well with Rory’s brown skin. Other things also stand out. The close-up of the crystal switches, warm burgundy glow of that iX beast, etc. Aesthetic splendor. As for the car…IDK. I’m at a place where I don’t understand why auto manufacturers are still going big. From my side, even if electric and use recycled materials and have zero emissions, these metal monsters still consume too much of the earth’s minerals when made. Great review as always Rory 👍 - still seems to lack the ambition they showed (and then possibly regretted on an ROI basis…) with the i3, which to me is still the most iconic EV out there 🤔
@rob30183 жыл бұрын
I agree! Unfortunately, the iconic BMW i3 will be discontinued in 2022. BMW went all guns blazing with the i3. It was only the 2nd production car to ever use carbon fiber and aluminum in the frame, (which is usually reserved for such as McLaren Supercars & F1 Grand Prix cars). The only other manufacturer to do that before BMW was Jaguar, with their XJR- 15 Sport model that cost £500,000 in the early '90s. BMW spent an estimated $3.5 billion, (according to Forbes) which included a brand new purpose-built green factory- the Leipzig Plant in Germany- just to accommodate and produce the i3 and i3S. Which also uses 80% recycled materials! The ambition is still there, it just needs to be revisited by BMW, as we saw with their ingenious i3.
