It came down to these two cars for me in my search for a suitable EV. The Enyaq won it for me for pretty much the reasons in the video, bigger boot space and a more family oriented vehicle for £10k less. Once I sat down and did a comparison in was a no-brainer. I get the Enyaq later this month. The Mustang Mach-E is a lovely looking car though and a lot of fun to drive!!

Thank you for your great videos and your comments. They really help. Just read the reason why they use drum brakes at the rear is corrosion because they corrode less than disc brakes. 😉 “Problems with braking components are typical of electric vehicles because, compared to combustion engines, they are used much less frequently and therefore corrode more frequently,” says TÜV association boss Joachim Bühler. Incidentally, this is the main reason why, for example, Volkswagen uses drum brakes instead of disc brakes on the rear axles of the ID series. - frandroid"

At first it seemed so affordable that I thought there's got to be a catch somewhere. After watching dozens of reviews, it seems that there's very little compromise. The driver's cockpit is smaller than I'd like, though the touchscreen is the biggest in its class. The interior looks 98% as premium as an Audi. The boot is definitely the biggest in its class by a wide margin. All in all I find it hard to justify paying an extra 10 grand for the alternatives

Great review, Rory. I am amazed though, that EVERY review by ANYONE of ANY Skoda, seems to focus on the umbrella/scraper/ticket holder thing, which I think are good things BUT they are hardly IMPORTANT and worth picking out every time.. These items cost PENCE and the issues of handling performance and practicality/reliability such seem to be tagged on behind. Skodas are much more than a couple of bits of plastic, they are good, solid reliable cars, often much better than the VW/Seat/Audi derivatives and the dealers treat you as a person, and future customer, rather than a twit who has been fooled by the badge. More reviews like this please.

Skoda £10k less than the Mustang? Rory can you advise the price of your Enyaq as optioned?- my estimation is £49k to £51k (2WD 80). Skoda have made the ‘from’ base price very attractive by making almost everything an option…

@@drunkenwhiskeyeu To be fair, Rory mentioned £5k difference for the larger battery car, however that MachE is the 4x4 version so it's over £58k with the larger battery. Quoted range for that car is 335 miles, so almost identical to the 336 miles that Skoda claim for the RWD Enyaq 80. Think the Enyaq 80 as driven would be around £42k in that colour with the brown leather and the 21" wheels, but without any other options. Not really comparing apples with apples.
@ISuperTed

Probably £42K - £44K. I was going to get an Enyaq as my company car but once you spec it up to something that is worth having (Leather, Bigger battery etc) it gets very expensive and on my company scheme an Enyaq like this is more than an ID4 and also a Q4 E-Tron! I ended up ordered a Q4 as an Audi for £50 a month less than an equivalent Skoda was too good a deal to turn down.

Head to head, I would take the Skoda. I just haven't warmed up to the Mach-Es design even as it is an impressive product. Can't believe the Skoda has such poor 0-62 and braking scores, which could be a deal-breaker. Overall, I'd take the Ionic 5 over all of them. An Iconic design and a strong first-effort from the clever Koreans. As for saving the environment, doesn't matter what you drive as much as how much you consume and use and, more importantly, waste. If you can motivate people to live a more frugal life-style, that could change everything.

I'd be the first one to say that paying upwards of £30k is a lot for a car...! However, I've just gone on the Skoda configurator to price up a near-as-I-can equivalent Kodiac 5 seater - with 19" alloys and DSG auto gearbox - and the price comes in at £31,665, which is only about £1k less than the Enyaq with 19" alloys and an auto gearbox. Factor in £155 per year road tax and about 39mpg for the ICE car and the numbers definitely favour the EV.

@@garethedwards2883 For the private new car market, it's not an issue - monthly costs are lower once you take into account fuel costs (not how I've bought my cars previously but lots of people do). It's more of an issue for second hand car buyers who often buy with cash rather than finance. The monthly cost calculations can still work out for them, but they'd probably have to take a loan to do it. The difference is their money would go to a finance company rather than an oil company. Make your own decision about the relative evils of those two! Changing from a cash purchase to a finance purchase is a much bigger change of mindset and not something everyone would be willing or able to do.

Just a comment about the drum brakes on the back - that's a good thing believe me. I've owned an e-golf for the last 4 years and had to change the back brakes twice because they rust to bits from lack of use (I live in Bergen, Norway where it rains a lot). Unless you drive all over the place braking extremely hard, the back brakes don't warm up enough to dry out properly. It's quite a common issue with EV's here. Having drum brakes, mitigates the problem, as well as the fact that the Skoda is a rear-wheel drive, so all of the regen braking force is coming from that axel anyway (unless you have the 80x, which might also take regen from the front - not sure on that one).

Q4 etron better than both for me. Looked at both when looking but ultimately when you spec up you are looking at 45k ish, lot of £££ for a Ford and a Skoda. Plus the Skoda looks a bit MPV to me, don’t know why. Back is a bit strange. Ford looks nice in black though.

Surprised he didn't mention the fact that Skoda appears a lot cheaper than the Mustang till you look at the options list, once you spec the Skoda to the level of the Mustang it's a very different story. Hyundai and Kia are the way to go, better looking, better specced , much better warranties, better value, better efficiency ........
@sdemosi
@sdemosi 2 жыл бұрын
Thr Skoda is very poorly specced and it becomes a premium car when you add all the safety tech and luxury you would think belongs there. The Ioniq 5 and EV6 have much better equipment. The Skoda only looks like good value when you forget about the range and equipment.

Drum brakes on any car in 2021 is flat out unacceptable.
@Simon-dm8zv

Nope. Drum brakes make perfect sense on non performance EVs. Rear brakes one an EV are barely used in daily use. Disc brakes would easily rust and get dirty, whereas drum brakes stay nice and clean.

Not sure why we seem to be retrogressing to rear wheel drive when front wheel drive should be safer in slippery conditions. Is this not true for electric cars that are 'new architecture from the ground up'? Can anyone explain? It can't just be that it's easier to package (so easier for the manufacturer)...
@AutoTraderTV
@AutoTraderTV 2 жыл бұрын
Rwd is inherently better for driving dynamics. It leaves each axle with its own function (push the car or steer the car). ICE cars benefited from FWD as it offered better space, less cost and - with the heavy engine over the front - better traction - but EVs can have more space regardless, the cost of positioning the motor is the same, and won’t benefit from front traction as there’s no heavy engine pushing the wheels down at the front. FWD EVs have very little traction and are often prone to huge skids when you accelerate in slippery conditions…. See my Kona electric review. When you accelerate in a RWD EV the weight transfers to the rear (squats) and you have better traction.

Rory, the larger the tire, the more comfortable the ride; the lower the tire profile, the harsher the ride. That's not a conundrum, because the larger the tire and the higher the tire profile, then the more comfortable the ride. From an engineering standpoint, automobile suspensions are governed by the spring-mass-damper system rules. Otherwise known as suspension settings. This is why my Tesla Model S Plaid was personally optioned with really high profile wheels, strictly for a more comfortable ride. If wheel profiles are kept the same, then larger wheels will result in more comfortable rides, contrary to your assertions. Overall, I like your videos, and I'm a big fan. But, get the engineering and intuition correct going forward. In an unrelated matter, and for what it's worth, the Korean word for the car company is a bastardization of the badly translated word Hyeondae, wherein the first syllable is a blend of the words "hon" and "hone", and the second syllable is a slightly off-syllable blend of the words "day" and "die", commercially written as "Hyundai", but somewhat pronounced "Hyeondae". The Americans, your overlords, are more correct in this instance😛.

Not sure I agree with you, pal. The Skoda was running 235/45/21 tyres. The Ford was on 255/55/19. The car with the larger, lower profile tyres was more comfortable. In my experience, with identical profiles, larger wheels will usually be less comfortable due to greater unsprung mass compromising the ride.
@geirthieussbimkravahl
@geirthieussbimkravahl 2 жыл бұрын
@@AutoTraderTV Rory, ignore car company tendencies. In general, the more expensive the car, the more the engineers are tasked with fine tuning the suspension. It's why six-figure sports cars have magnetic ride dampers. You own a sports car (the Ford Mustang, I believe), put higher profile tires on your Mustang (keep the outer radius on your mustang tire rubbers the same), and I guarantee the ride will be much more comfortable.
