You don't have to use the screen for opening the glovebox. Just press the right steering wheel button and saying,' Open Glovebox'. Many more voice commands for a/c, music, nav, mirrors etc.

Best thing? There's now a proper choice. 18 months ago I chose a Model 3 and I'm still really happy with it and it was easily the best option a year and a half ago. No misconceptions about it being perfect though and really pleased that I'll have a choice next time. I hate SUVs though, so I'll have a look at the Mach E, but I'd be surprised if that's what I end up with.

A modern interior design does not have to look so bland (3 & Y). The Mach-E interior is better designed and organized with a sport lux vibe. A new customer for Tesla is leaving a German brand, lux. Japanese, or can easily drops 45 plus grand on a car. These consumers have expectations for their interior cabin and only the Model S, can some what compete. Case in point see the Ioniq 5, E-Tron, Taycan, etc.

I read today that the Model Y will have the 4680 batteries when Giga Berlin produces and ships to the UK - maybe in a year? That will be a larger, faster car than the Mach E but with likely 400 mile range. Other than the size everything else will be pretty much the same as the Model 3. So, if you were leaning toward MAch E, I'd wait the year for the EU-built Model Y.

I was going to say the same thing, picked up a model 3 LR last week and already starting to do everything by voice command, I think a lot of people forget that’s an option, it works really well. You can also setup Siri Shortcuts to control the majority of car functions too

I really don't get the hype about Android Auto or Apple Carplay. Good EV's e. g. use navigation data to preheat or cool the battery before the charging stopp, which will lead to siginificantly better charging speeds. In general the navigation will be a lot better since it can include car data such as the SOC. Spotify is also integrated in cars like a Tesla, so listening to music won't be a problem either.

The partition in the Mach E is removable. Also, the hatchback makes it easier to carry, load, and unload larger items in the Mach E. Tesla should make a liftback version of the Model 3. That shouldn't require any major retooling.

I think you've been a bit kind to the Ford on this one. I mean I am not saying it is a bad car- but it is just so much more expensive than the Tesla that In the real world, buying it would feel like a waste of money. The Model 3 simply has more real-world history behind it. It shows up in little things, and most definitely in the OS. The Ford needs more iterations to make the ownership experience better day in and out. 3's don't brick when charging, and the OTA updates are transparent and largely flawless. The charging network (specially in the US) is also unmatched. I'd bet a dollar Rory would have a much clearer decision if he lived with both for an extended time. Ask Tesla owners what they think after 2-3 years.

Both cars are great, but in Europe in 2021 *only the Tesla will be able to go everywhere* without any stress, ie as easily as an ICE car and with the performance and comfort of an EV. BTW the model 3 is cheaper, to buy and to run since Ionity is quite expansive. Anyway, both are fully electric so both are good choices for air quality and to help fight climate change.

Using the touchscreen for some things in the Model 3 can be a bit fiddly, so use voice commands instead. Yes, even "open glovebox". There's also a physical volume control on the steering wheel.

Voice commands are slower and less reliable for simple tasks (like opening a glovebox), but can be useful for more complex operations that would require many button presses or lots of searching through menus. Ideally, you want a mixture, which is what most cars do. It just looks like Tesla are cheaping out to me since there's no reason not to have the best of both worlds.

The lack of switches in the model3 is not an issue, 90% of the cars function can be controlled by voice including, wipers, lights, radio, glovebox , temperature, so much easier than reaching for a button or switch, my advice, test drive them both, do some proper research, then choose

Slightly weird. A Model 3SR+ is 34000€ after incentives here. A Mach E Standard Range RWD with the smaller tech pack (the one with glass roof, electric seats etc. [standard in the Tesla] isn't available with the base version) is 39830€ (after exactly the same incentives). That's 17% more for the slower, worse equipped car. And the Ford will be 30% more expensive regarding consumption. Gotta be rich to Ford nowadays..

If you don’t need the tech pack you should go with the Ford because you get a bigger car for the same amount of money with a NON LFP battery like in the model 3 SR+, which conforms way better than the LFP battery in cold conditions. If you ll check ABRP, you ll find out, that both nearly have the same range (because the standard battery of the Mustang is higher). Anyway, both great cars. But I would not buy a current SR+ with LFP battery.

For me, who drives sometimes by cold temperatures in southern Germany/Austria, the Model 3 LFP is not recommended by tesla. And for that amount of money I insist on a car, that works properly no matter what’s the temperatures. So I had to go for the LR ... but that’s to expensive for me. But if you are fine with the lfp and don t need the size of the Mustang the SR+ is the best choice for you I guess.

Great review. But Rory should started to: 1 - mention that Tesla Model Y is not available in Europe (thanks Elon) 2 - mention that the car giveaway is only for Uk residents. As for the result: both great cars so it’s a matter of preference. That’s why the brands offer test drives 😁

You kind a left out the driver assist, which Tesla rule completely, and one pedal driving. Also the Tesla also have a off screen volume control, its conveniently located in the steering wheal.

Matter of preference. The mustang looks way better in my opinion. But I think range is one of the most important things in which case the tesla wins.

Might be worth mentioning that the Mach-e didn't make the Moose test here in Sweden. Says a lot of the handling of the car. Also having the Super charging network in the Tesla makes it a no brainer for me. Would easily go with the Tesla.

You shouldn't lose 5% every year. Maybe 5% after 4-5 years. It depends if you use the high speed charging all the time and if you charge over 90% often. Those things degrade battery life. I personally use a home charger and charge to 65% daily. I only charge over 90% if I am going on a road trip. My battery shouldn't degrade much at all.

Obviously the Tesla is going to be superior as it's a clean sheet design and has years of EV expertise behind it. The Ford is a good first attempt but to say it is equal to Tesla is just silly.

really? imagine two gasoline cars - one is 200kg heavier, much slower, much worse mileage and can refuel only at some gas stations and even than can uses narrow hoses that result in longer refuel... yeah... no winner, both great cars :)
