I totally LOVED my K-car when I lived in Japan. I still remember the agony of having to choose between having the A/C on vs. getting the car over 50mph. You couldn't have both. We used to cry "activate turbo mode!" (and switch off the AC) for extra power.

As the owner of a '93 AZ-1 Mazdaspeed Version myself - of 3 and a half years - this review hit a lot of great points that other reviews don't - the enjoyment of using a lot of the car without going excessively fast, the attention and looks of bewilderment from the general public, and the whole essence of driving such a vehicle in modern North America with everything being so much bigger. I feel like a kid in a gokart that made his way off track and onto streets with adults and joyriding hoping to not get caught - even when I'm actually commuting somewhere no matter how mundane. It feels wrong... but that's a feeling that makes every drive special. Thanks for the great content!

16:54 - THIS is THE THING that matters in a road car. The faster and more capable a car is, the LESS you get to enjoy it on the road. Two cars can travel the same distance, and the drivers can experience vastly different amounts of "driving". I didn't understand this until I drove $150k high end sports cars with huge power and aero, and then realized that none of them even came close on the road to being as fun, engaging, and rewarding as a hot hatch or a lightly modified NA Miata. You can drive those cars like a maniac without endangering those around you, or breaking the law. Try that in your supercar!

The Japanese Kei car designation was mostly about pushing smaller car sizes to fit better within the cramped cities of Japan. They also provide better gas/petrol millage. They are limited in top speed/horsepower but you do get a tax break for buying one vs a normal sized car. Another benefit for Kei cars is that when buying a normal sized car in Japan you must prove you have a paring space for it at time of purchase but Kei cars are exempt from this regulation.

I think with some slight upgrades (For example, upgraded turbo, suspension, wheels, tires, exhaust and a small tune) would make this thing a perfect weekend cruiser, mountain/canyon driver, hell, even a sick little track toy. There is some serious potential here, but most importantly is how I can imagine just having a huge grin/smile across my face, constantly while driving this thing. Only downside for me personally, would be the cost. Imports, or anything that's remotely different from the majority of cars here, cost insane amounts of money (Living in down under). my neighbor has 1 of this but my other neighbor has a second generation Suzuki Alto and it is smaller, Mazda 2235mm long and 720kg, Suzuki 2175mm long and 630kg. I used to have a Subaru Vivio GX-R 660cc I4 supercharge 64hp, 3295mm long and 656kg, it was a really fun little car until I blow the transmission. I paid like $3000 USD back then now they are around $11000 here in Japan.

James Hunt (RIP), former F1 world champion, used to drive around in an Austin A35 van (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_A35#/media/File:Austin_A35_van.jpg) for pretty much that reason. He could drive it on the limit with no risk whatsoever of getting a speeding fine.
@SI0AX3 жыл бұрын
@@abarratt8869 LMAO that's pretty smart TBH. He can drive like he's racing and never loose the touch of driving on the limit.

I commuted for 45 minutes a day, each way, for 3 years, in a Suzuki GX Coupe. 360cc 2-stroke, sounded like a swarm of bees. I had SOOO much fun; my toes were only 12 inches from the front bumper! I recall a guy nearly falling out of his car on the motorway... he seemed to be trying to see something. When I got home I found someone had hung a pair of black frilly knickers on the passenger's side "hockey-stick" wing mirror, while I had been at work! 😱 🥴 This little baby would have been the perfect upgrade for me. 👍 Thanks for the video.

How angry are you at your life that you give this video and the AZ-1 a thumbs down? These cars are a blast to drive and the smiles per mile are unbeatable. The only pain is being on pot-hole patrol full time while driving. Hit one and it is extremely jarring. If you ever get a chance to drive one, don’t pass it up. I found when pulling into a parking spot that everyone who sees you smiles and then when you open the gullwing doors the smiles increase in size and everyone one turns happy. Great video gentlemen.

Swap the AZ-1's engine with a LS and now you get a death coffin
@onelyone69763 жыл бұрын
Well the car’s as big as an LS motor, strap a hayabusa engine in the back and it’s an absolute rocket
@TheLastCrankers3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you might swap a ls if you have absolutely no taste whatsoever (and you cut out half the car), OR you might swap something from a sportsbike.
@kevinobyrne80203 жыл бұрын
You could fit an LS motor easily. You just wouldn't have room for the driver and passenger. Lmao

That would be the *PERFECT* car to bomb up or down from Sky Londa in the Santa Cruz Mountains to San Gregorio on the beach. High revving, stick shift is what is needed for a decent speed run. You want to keep the RPM's high. When you approach a curve _Do not brake!_ take your foot off the gas going into the curve and put your foot in the carburetor when you're in the curve. The curves are extremely high banked and almost no steering is required. The second that you back off the gas in the curve, you're toast. The understeer will put you into oncoming traffic or, off a cliff.

An AZ-1 has been a dream for many years at this point but knowing the price is too much (since I'm only 21), having a Daihatsu Copen is the best middle ground I can have here in Ireland. : )

It probably has quite a bit more than 64hp. I mean 600cc bikes to 80-100 easy even back then and thats without a turbo. I really love the looks and sound of that little car. I would love to drive one. Sounds like a lot of fun :)

Some of the best times I have had back home was in subcompact and kei cars like the Suzuki Alto Works, Daihatsu Mira/Cuore Turbo. None stop redlining trying to keep up with EK3 SiRs and Nissan Primera GT. You had to time the overtake perfectly just to keep up by anticipating overtake, downshifting and flooring even before the oncoming car passed and then hit dipped out on the bumper of the faster cars and you stayed out there overtaking as much as possible then dip back in the line. Fun times.

I’m pretty sure Az1 has more than 64 HP. Kinda like how the Skyline was advertised as 270HP because of an agreement but dino runs usually hit 300ish.

In 2004 I went from a 1996 Twincam Saturn to a 2002 ZO6 Corvette. There absolutely IS something to be said for slower cars being more fun... I could drive the transmission right out of that Saturn on the street (three of them, in fact) and have an absolute blast without worrying (too much) about going to jail. Pull through the same gears in the Z and, well, let's just say you're asking for big trouble. For someone hopelessly addicted to the joy of rowing his own gears with a manual, a fun-to-drive and modestly powered car on the street absolutely makes sense. Don't get me wrong, the Z06 is an absolutely AWESOME car, even today, but as cars get faster and the penalties for enjoying yourself on the road relentlessly trend upward, modest fun is getting more valuable, in my humble opinion.

Years ago I visited a Japanese Importer of Kei cars , they had a red Autozam on the lot, I was smitten , asked if i could sit in it, smiling the salesman said sure , I crammed myself into it and proceeded to slam the gull wing door down on my head, there was no way I could drive it. Ended up buying a Suzuki Works Alto RS , an amazing car , super fun and reliable.
