I am so sorry to hear about your loss of Tiny......we become so attached to the birds, almost like part of the family. Wish I had the words to make it better. Loving an animal or pet and loosing it is traumatic. Good thoughts your way. I feel that somehow another bird will come into your life. Hang in there my friend

I am very sorry for the loss of that wonderful little chickadee. I hope you feel peace and comfort in knowing you helped her live a very happy and healthy life. I too have had a similar experience with a sweet chickadee I called little peep. It still breaks my heart and I have to remind myself to be grateful for the time I was privileged to spend with her.... Thank you for uploading this. Its comforting knowing someone else feels so much about earth's little creatures. Sometimes I feel crazy for caring as much as I do 😊

Lesley: we love you and your love of nature. You are clearly a special person! I have been feeding chickadees for decades, but only once or twice have I had one land on me. I know what you mean about the attachment. I make sure the birds have seed before I have my first sip of coffee. The chickadees are so sweet *and* brave. They live in such a wilderness and are so tiny. I always feel respect for them. I am so sorry you lost your friends. You are in a wonderful position to make some new ones. Peace and Love

What a beautiful video, Lesley. The autumn colors of the birds & flora is awesome. Your dedication to our feathered friends & in making these videos, is beyond words. I am SO sorry for your loss. I believe most of us know what you are feeling. A few years ago we had a squirrel, Sammy, who came everyday for 3 years & would eat nuts from our hand, & would even sit in my lap. Suddenly he disappeared for about 6 weeks. Hubby & I thought for sure he was hit by a car or got eaten by a Hawk. Then one afternoon we spotted him walking to our back door, skinny & very sick looking. I tried to give him a nut, but he refused it. Instead, he licked my fingers, then licked my hubby's fingers, & slowly walked away & we never saw him again. We're SURE he was saying good-bye. Blessings to you Lesley & may your pain lessen each day, as you hold those 2 precious Chickadees in your heart. ♥

Beautiful♡ Love your birds, they are more than just birds ..they have so much trust in you and a symbiotic relationship with them...you are blessed with a gift of communing with nature. How heartbreaking, as to what happened to Tiny and Tim losing his mate. That is why in my backyard my regular birds especially the mourning doves...I have my German Shepherd to help me chase the hawk...the other birds feel safe around my Shepherd girl... I know I can not stop predators ...but in my back yard I help out when possible.. you could have not stopped what happened..perhaps a bobcat or hawk that you did not spot.We try and protect the things we love, nature can be brutal.

I started watching this video which is amazing and I was thinking you should send your videos to Animal Planet and Nat Geo etc. because they are so well done and personal. One of my favourite Jays was grabbed first thing in the morning out of our apple tree by a Coopers Hawk while she was cracking a peanut. I was bringing more peanuts out when I saw the scuffle. The hawk took her ( Joker's mom), and all I could hear was her screaming out as she was kidnapped away. I lost it and went running down our rural road sobbing hoping to save her and I was defeated. I feel your pain and know how devastating it is. I love my birds so much, they make me happy and I like helping them any way I can. I am so sorry about Tiny and how you feel. You are such a wonderful person to help the birds the way you do. I am so attached to your birds like they are my own. Bless you and keep helping everyone else, those birds love you!!!

just beautiful dear Lesley!!!! amazing vids!! those are some beautiful grey jays!!! Just love Peanut! And LOVE Lentil!! I'm very sorry for Tiny!!! I'd have cried too... big time!!!! Yes, life is not fair. It's beautiful, but it's also very, very cruel!!!! We've had lots of frost on the ground for the past 2 weeks now here in western Massachusetts. Most of the leaves are already gone by now.... despite that, there have been so many white-throated sparrows, juncos, cardinals, finches, chickadees, nuthatches, mourning doves, woodpeckers and jays coming around to the feeders and suet i put out. Some nights, the temps were in the single digits (8 degrees F), and i was worried about them and my other little critters ( possums, skunks, squirrels, grey foxes). haven't seen the latter lately, but today, i saw all the birds and squirrels. hope my other little friends are keeping safe during this frosty time. take care of yourself. I'm looking forward to see more of your posts!

Oh Lesley - I've been crying over your loss of Tiny. :(:( How awful to hear the screeching noise and you can't go further due to the trees. My heart goes out to you. I've been around songbirds and parrots and when I've lost one it's devastating. I doubt it was a hawk as the Blue Jays would've been screaming (if any Jays were around). Maybe a snake or other predator? Tiny had your trust for 5 years - she was special. She lives on in your heart forever. She may still be out there, just taking time to heal - one never knows. Blue, Sweet Girl and the rest love you and look forward to seeing you. The forest brings you much happiness - it outweighs the sadness by far. My thoughts and prayers are with you (((Lesley))) - Stephanie

This is so beautiful, not just the birds and surroundings, but your relationship with so many birds. Peanut is turning into a "mama's boy." How neat about the little Chickadee stashing seeds in your jacket! When you go back, will you stash a few where she did in case she looks for them? So very sweet. I have not tried to learn how to tell the difference between the Jays and Chickadees since my short-term memory is not very good. However, I do think that was a different Janco (thank you for teaching me that name/species), the brown on his upper chest looked a bit different. Again, I thank you for teaching me so much. Wow! I did not realize the Jays swallowed the peanuts whole, shell and all! I thought they took them elsewhere to get the nuts out of the shells. I am very sorry about Tiny. You can't help but get attached to your little friends. :-( I love the photo of the little feat on the limb at 14:30. I agree with you that the Moose coming out was a sign, a sign of the ones that see you, even if you don't always see them, accept you as a friend and helper, not a threat. So, that was a positive note. I thank you for all that you share and teach. I so enjoy your posts.

Sorry for your loss. I have a similar relationship with a bunch of wild mallard ducks where I live, and can relate to the attachment. The sad reality is that all living things will eventually expire. Great footage! Blue and sweet girl are amazing at catching peanuts! Wow!! And I’ve never seen a junco with brown either, before you mentioned it I thought it was odd that it was brownish, (I noticed something that a bird expert noticed as well, I’m so proud of myself! Lol). And aww, poor tiny :( so sorry to hear about that. It’s stressful caring for these birds sometimes. I had to take a break once because I heard a scream sound outside of my room window (which faces the backyard where my birds visit) and I ran outside to make sure everything was ok and then for awhile after that I felt like I had to be so alert so I could listen for any sounds of distress in case I had to go outside and chase a cat away or something lol. But it became stressful so I took a break for about 2 weeks. I just kept my window closed and put food out and went inside and didn’t even want to look outside to watch them eat. The scream sound is so sad, until then I didn’t know birds made sounds like that. But I think it was just so stressful because it was my own backyard and I can hear the birds from my room. It was like my worrying for them was bleeding into my sleep time etc.. completely different scenario than you and tiny I know, just thought I’d share- there’s way more good times In birding than the bad and stressful times, and don’t forget you still have so many other bird friends!

So sorry about Tiny it’s a blessing you are able to feed and video these lovely birds and they’re blessed to know you and have a fan base. We have one jay who yells even when he’s happy there are peanuts. Just got dark eyed juncos here recently and they seem pretty comfortable around the rest but the jays are getting territorial about the peanuts when they see the chipmunk around.

I had a canary for 11 years that suddenly got sick. I loved that bird. I tried everything to make him better, but he just barley hung on. In the mean time I had a stray cat that showed up at my door and he seemed to want to stay. After about a week I decided to keep the cat. I took him to the vet and got him all checked out. That night my canary died. That cat, whom I named Happy was the best pet I ever had. I have had lots of dogs and I love them.....but this cat LOVED ME...it was obvious, he followed me around, slept with me all cuddled up, met me in the driveway when I came home from work, when my girlfriend would let him in he would bypass her and come running to me ….etc.etc. This is a possible case of syncronicity, I don't know, but I will never forget either one of them.

I'm so so sorry for your loss. Your loss is everyone's loss that knows you and the birds through you. I know that it is heartbreaking, but, 5 years is a long time to live for the tiny birds. The books say 2-4 years is normal for them. So, you gave her longer that she may have had; find peace in that fact. Life is filled with unfortunate happenings. Something happened to my little 'Tweet'; the tiniest dee you ever saw. So tiny you wonder how one so little could actually fly. I will miss that little one forever as you will miss Tiny. We've had a European blackbird that has learnt to tap on the kitchen window for treats, usually fruit. It’s common for him to disappear in autumn but thus far hasn’t returned this winter. There are now several males in what was his patch and he defended vigilantly. It is sad, but nature has a plan. I appreciate you are much closer on a personal level than with your birds than I am to those that visit my feeder station. The blackbird is only known as 'our blackbird'. However, I have had animals in my life that have broke my heart when I have lost them. One dog, Otis, stayed by my side through the worst of my alcoholism and for the first couple of years of my sobriety and he was my saviour more than once. I think the way your relationship with your birds is very special, and very rare. I think there is a spirituality in nature, left alone without man's terrible interventions it keeps everything in perfect balance. She does everything with a purpose, sometimes that purpose is easy to see, feeding young etc, sometimes not. All I know is that your birds have someone special in their lives and they are aware of that. Take care, thinking of you.

I had a similar thing with a much loved bird going.. I'd had a Eurasian Blackbird come to the garden and take up residence as one of the local "pets". He absolutely astounded me by getting the hand of the hanging feeders (no pun intended).. He could always be found clambering across the mesh on the outside and pecking out the tasty morsels. When he found a mate, he was always trying to teach her how to feed this way too (Blackbirds are ground feeding birds; I've never seen another one that's taken to hanging feeders), but she always found it hard.. After 3 years of their presence, I heard a frantic Blackbird alarm call, so ran outside to see what was going on, and all the magpies in the area were clustered around in the trees watching and cawing; I'd assumed there'd been a tussle with the magpies (they're abject bullies), but a minute or so later, I saw a kite fly off with a sad black shape in the talons. For the rest of the day, Blackbird's mate kept randomly alarm calling, knowing that her mate wouldn't be back, and just being very sad. I'm not normally an emotional person (well, I am, but have it well hidden), but on this, I was actually in tears. I get why you'd be so upset about the loss of a much loved feathered friend. That's exactly what they are, whether they know it or not.. Friends.. Being a city guy, I don't have huge numbers of birds (well, I never used to; one insomnia night, I really paid attention, and found that there was almost no morning chorus; a far cry from what I remembered hearing as a kid. I vowed then and there to do what I could to fix that, and I've been busy doing things to build up the bird populations since), and the ones that come, I bond to as through they were pets; part of the family. And this Blackbird had a behaviour so different to most that there was absolutely no mistaking him. He's still missed, several years later, and I've never had another Blackbird using hanging feeders..

I saved three baby house finches after each one repeatedly fell out of their damaged nest during a strong blow that lasted all day... I had to tie down the bush to keep it from swaying violently around and then I re-supported the nest as best I could, and luckily my efforts paid off. I got to watch them from my window each day until Windy, Stormy, & Lucky each finally left the nest a few weeks later one afternoon, never to return. I was sad to see them go, but very glad they all survived on my watch... However, the following Spring, the mom and dad returned and made a nest in the same Arborvitae bush, but then lost all 4 babies to a predator of some sort after their nest was again banged up by another strong blow (déjà vu all over again), but this time, my efforts to save them failed. I hope it wasn't a Blue Jay that got them.

Please keep in mind (much bigger picture), your videos of birds encourages many of us to mind our feeders, and attempt relationships with birds all over the world. I enjoy all my feeder birds, but have to realize i will provide them with food, but their world is out of my control. Enjoy them while you can. I've gained so much respect for the many birds in your videos. Lately, I've been entertained by a raucous family of crows. The '5 Stooges'. Keep up the good work! We're only on this rock for a finite amount of years... Enjoy!

It's been 4yrs now- since my daughter's and I lost 2 of our family members (Pumpkin Hulsey's) we raised them since day 1 "Sweetheart and Scrappy" 2 of the smartest, loveliest, kind bird one could have in there lives. My family and I did everything together: visit parks, beaches, road trips and movie theater's! Yes, they were house trained ♥️.. After 7 years of love, it was devastating. Lesley, may I leave you words that helped me with lost of 2 family members. We love, we are loved. We care with passion, so we are passionate. Eye's are the path way connection to the soul. Your soul has been seen; so your birds felt love, lived with love and understood love "through you" and they forever will carry your true seen soul with them no matter where they are. ♥️ I am sorry..💔

How sad to lose a favorite pair of chickadees so quickly. I've seen a few taken by hawks and it's always a jarring and sad experience. They are gone but never to be forgotten. On an up note, your photos and cinematography are outstanding. Your relationship with the jays is amazing. I hand feed chickadees and red breasted nuthatches, but my jays are so skittish I may never be able to hand feed them. I'm always amazed how yours land and seem quite comfortable in your hands. Concerning the brownish juncos, here in Nova Scotia I have had several brown ones come to my yard over the years. Some were a rich chocolatey brown on their upper parts, and some had notes of gold. We called those goldies. I always took those to be immature juncos. One junco I had here must have been a tad leucistic or something, because it was blond! It stood out from the other juncos like it was lit from the inside. I got a quick video of it(it was only here a moment then one never to be seen again) if I can dig that video up I may post it. Your videos are informative, fun, and beautiful to watch. Keep up the wonderful work!

I didn't know Bluejays would swallow peanuts whole like that! Lovely heartwarming video. A good way to start my day. Sorry about your wee chickadee Tiny. :( Don't worry about the death too much. Whatever happens, it's part of the natural process. I know you love the birds. I do too.

It could also have been a squirrel who attacked tiny. It’s not unheard of for them to attack adult birds. :-/ I lost one of my frequent (backyard) birds too. The first song sparrow who I became attached too, and would sing or call to me to give him sunflower hearts. I fed him out my window, and sometimes all I had to do was open my curtains and he would fly to my window. We had a freak snow day in November where I live(va) and that was the last day I saw him.

Wow- just found this video, where have you been. I have been feeding birds for the past 10+ years. I’m fascinated alone by watching them eat. How did you get them to eat from your hands like that- so magical! I want to do this. Just moved into a new home and I filled my feeders today- also got a bird house. There is a coup of bluebirds which excite me because I’ve never spotted them before. Thank you so much for sharing- I’ll be watching more of your videos;)

Ah, Lesley...you have bonded with "your" birds much like I have mine. I was cutting back my milkweed after a hard freeze a couple of weeks ago when I suddenly heard a Cardinal screaming....screaming....as I stood up and spun around, I saw a Cooper's hawk, with the screaming Cardinal in his talons. He quickly flew off, with his prey. All of this happened within 15' from where I stood. :( Like you, I become so very close to many of my "regular" birds - Cardinals in particular, and a family of Blue Jays, have come and fed close to me for years. The male Cardinal that was killed that afternoon was known to me as Franklin; I'd received him into rehab 7 years ago, as a nestling. I raised and released him and he's brought his fledglings in to meet me for several years. I loved him deeply. *sigh* So I feel your pain, I really do. Did you find any evidence of Tiny's death? Any feathers? Just curious. I'm so, so sorry.
