Lesley-----you sound a little better then last video. I felt so sorry about Tiny. A few years ago I had a chipmunk that we fed at out backdoor and my Golden Retriever thought it was his playmate. We fed him peanuts and water for a year and a half ( except hibernation at winter)going into our second year of peanuts and drink at the backdoor we found him dead.........I am not ashamed to say I cried and felt like I dont want to get close to nature anymore. Well you know how that goes.......I am trying to get close to my chipmunks again and my birds are like my children....guess I am a little crazy...........hang in there the good times are worth it.....thanks for sharing

Lesley so happy to hear from you again!🌛 I cried for two days from your last video. It's really hard when you lose your best friend and especially a bird. I still really don't believe peanut would eat a chickadee. Seriously? But It's not even listed as part of their diet anywhere. I'm confused. This video and the last video definitely keeps showing a large hawk wing several times, so I would take a closer look. I mean it doesn't matter really because its nature, but still. Find out the truth. On another note, a hawk came to my yard yesterday looking for a bird to eat. My mockingbird was outside next to me and I stood in the cold with him to ensure he was safe. He's my everything and I'm not sure how I could handle if anything happened to him. He's my piece of heaven. Enjoy every minute you have with the birds. Nature is beautiful, but also cruel. In the end all you get to keep are the memories. I totally relate that one special bird is the first thing that you think of when you step outside. It will take time to heal. Hugs and best wishes from Boston. 😘😭🐦

You're right about birds imitating one another. I have two parrots who don't even like each other, but they do copy what the other is doing all the time. If one starts eating, the other will do the same. At night when they go to sleep, they both grind their beaks at the same time for about 10 minutes, it's pretty funny.

Nerd - never apologize for having compassion, period. We all must eat and Peanut would not have seen "Tiny" as our sweet little strong hearted Tiny it was "Food" and agree no reason to blame an animal for doing what it's instincts to survive are. Caring for the tiny projects the way you would the giants....the difference only being the passion. You do you, love, heal and live for you. Your person shows is your work and I am great full to be able to look into your world a little and vicariously through you! For that thank you and keep doing you!! I am SO SORRY about Tiny you can hear it in your voice in the videos that she was "extra" special to you :) You work is absolutly stunning as your passion emminates from all aspects you touch. Yes, we have to deal with the sadness of nature. I've discovered "my" woodpecker has a missing tail. That's why he hops around and can't fly. Every day I look for him in the yard or by the neighbor's fence. She has a lot of bushes and tangled shrubs so I hope he does okay till (the other bird experts have assured me) his tail grows back. I also like the bluejays but my heart belongs to my red bellied woodpecker. Thanks for another sweet video. You're my inspiration.

Dear Leslie, I haven't watched your previous video yet, but I wanted to express my sympathy for you on the loss of your dear little bird friend. There are no words adequate to comfort your heart. But know this, the Spirit of this bird is still very much alive! You may find it healing to write him a letter telling him how much his friendship meant to you. You may also want to try the homeopathic Bach Flower, "Rescue Remedy," to help ease the stress of this loss. Ask your friend to come to you in your dreams. When I watch your videos, I usually share them on at least one of my boards on Pinterest. These are, "Fabulous Birds," "Blue Jays - Brazen and Beautiful," and 'Goldfinches - Symbols of Joy." You are the living representation of Dr. Doolittle. I always feel Nature's creatures understand us far better than we understand them. Their intelligence and intuitive abilities are so amazing. Thank you for your kind, thoughtful, informative and wonderful videos! Best wishes for all your nature encounters, good health, prosperity and joy! Dianna

Thanks, Lesley, for another edition of heartwarming bird stories! I'm so sorry for your loss :( I must confess I have been so jealous of your red-breasted nuthatches, because I hadn't seen any here in southern Indiana for years. UNTIL a few days ago they came back!!! They dart in so quickly to grab a sunflower seed and immediately they're gone. I had forgotten they are a little smaller than the white-breasted nuthatch. My Stan Tekiela Field Guide says they are irruptive and move around the state to find food; common during some winters and scarce during others. So that explains it. I'm so happy to have them back! Keep up the great work!

@@LesleytheBirdNerd Lesley, you will not believe! I ALMOST fed one of your darling little red-breasted nuthatches today! As I was filling the sunflower seed feeder one landed on the shepherd's hook 2 feet away, and then darted down to grab a seed and was gone. It took my breath away! I immediately thought, "Lesley! This bird knows Lesley!" So I grabbed a handful of seeds, tried to hold my hand exactly like you; after 2 tries, it landed on the shepherd's hook about 6 inches from my hand, gave the sweetest little chirps, but bypassed me for the feeder! I moved my hand closer but no luck. Will try again tomorrow. The white-breasted were also coming in, flying under my outstretched arm. Any pointers for getting started? I know you are truly a "bird whisperer," but do you actually whisper, and if so, what? Is it your cologne? I'll try it. Lol. I know you have said they helped you through a healing process, and I certainly meet that criteria, having lost my wife a few months ago. Maybe this too is being orchestrated from above, like my little Carolina Wrens that soothed my broken heart :)

If we love and respect birds, we need to respect and acknowledge all parts of them, even their predation behavior. When we become part of their world, we'll begin to witness real, raw nature. It's the circle of life when the Jays are preyed upon by the raptors, and so it goes.

Glad to hear that you're feeling a little better, despite losing Tiny and Tim. And with the knowledge that it was possibly Peanut and you're still treating him as a friend is very admirable, not enough people these days have that kind of attitude when it comes to the trials life hands us. I personally don't think it was him, it doesn't make sense that he would go after her when he has all the seeds you give them and grubs available. It was nice to see the jays again in all their comical mischief, thanks you for letting us into your adventures with the birds Lesley ^v^

I just discovered these vids. I love them, thank you and great job! Do you ever see the jays mimicking noises and other sounds? I have some in my yard that mimic the squeak of my window and my version of their call. The window freaked me out as I was in other room thinking someone was trying to get in my house. Lol. But I laughed as I saw the Jay in my Burch looking at me repeating it. The jays also mimic the red shouldered hawk that goes by sometimes to scare birds away from the peanuts I think. That's when I know to open the window and throw out sunflower seeds and peanuts. When I hear squeak squeak and soft noises. I have some Cardinals too. I know I'm a food source but I notice they come over to the highest bush in front of the window to almost be eye to eye with me and make quiet noises while looking at me. Red doesn't always want food right away and seems to get happy and excited. They brought their family last year. I was overjoyed. Mother red seemed a lil iffy and understandably protective but then was ok over time as the two babies got bigger and could feed themselves. So cute.

Such a great video with which to end the autumn season. I'm so glad you sounded better this time, Lesley. I was concerned about you, as was many others, after your last one with the loss of Tiny & Tim. You're right in that we cannot dislike or disown any of our other bird buddies 'IF' they were to attack another bird for a meal. Like someone mentioned below, as well fed as your gang of feathered friends are, I would be hard pressed to think one of them was at fault. Several years ago while our family was eating dinner, we looked outside our kitchen window only to spot one of our Scrub Jays stop in a Juniper bush & quickly devour 2 hatching Hummer Babies. Gone in an instant! Yes we were upset but we all moved on. My son who is 49, is the Sr. Aviculturist at the New Orleans Audubon Aquarium in the Penguin exhibit. My hubby & I still feed our Scrub Jays on a daily basis as they fly & sit on our hands for their peanuts. There's an instinct built into or feathered friends, & unlike humans, they don't kill for no reason or just for the joy of it. I cannot imagine a world without birds. Please take care of yourself & once again, thank you for sharing this fabulous video. We birders love your work & look forward to your next video. Blessings always! ♥

Lesley - Another great video with beautiful birds and colors.👍👍👍 I was worried about you and each time you are feeding the birds, you will continue to think of Tiny and Tim. I doubt Peanut attacked her. If she was on the ground, could it have been a snake or other ground dwellers that were there - staying very still - and she landed in just the right spot for it. I'm glad you continue to take your walks and visit with the birds. If you were missing, I'm sure Blue would fly to your house and rap tap tap on your roof or windows :) You could make postcards or holiday/event cards from many of the parts on this video with all of the different birds - just a thought.- Stephanie

Lesley, thank you for your thoughts on the nature of things. I often struggle with this too. I wonder when the occasional hawk swoops into my yard where I have a few hanging feeders. I worry that I am making the smaller birds easy prey. I am not sure what the correct thing to do is. But, I do know, the birds seem to appreciate the seeds especially in winter.

What cute tiny cones on the tree at the first of the video. I understand how bigger birds and animals prey on smaller ones. It hurts, but that's just the way nature is. I had a Chihuahua that I got at 10 weeks old. I was always very careful to be with her in the yard so a large Hawk or other bird would not take her. If that had happened, I would have been very upset, but would not hate the bird for doing what it needed to do to live. I'm very happy it did NOT happen. How neat that you can play with Hatch and Maggie like you do! I love that Blue follows you home. How very sweet, or greedy. ;-) Sweet Lentil hiding seeds.

I know they were competing for a nest box but I have two within 100 feet or so and eventually theyhad successful nests in each. One bluebird family and one tree swallow family. So they can co-exist in the same acre if they want to. Ever hear of this?

I like how trees drop apples and nuts on the ground. If they had brains, they would want this to happen. In fact, while humans may seem to be using trees and other plants, just think about it: we're doing their job for them. Farmers plant more seeds, so they do exactly what we want. It's like some sort of conspiracy: while we seem to be using plants, in fact plants are using _us!_

I also struggle mightily accepting the fact that animals eat other animals. I know it’s nature, and survival of the fittest, but it still breaks my heart. I hate to see any other creature die or even struggle (even insects). My heart breaks a little whenever I see it. I know Buddhism reminds us that everything is impermanent, which of course is true, but I have a hard time accepting it.

i feel exactly the same! i cry when i see birds or other animals wounded, sick, or in pain. i cried for two days when a coyote i fed got run over by traffic and i saw him/her on the other side of the road right across from my house. i can't even kill a fly, honestly. people may think i'm weird, but it's the truth. bless you for caring!

Adelaide Diana Carlea, you’re not weird. Life is a beautiful gift for every living creature, and death is a disaster. I understand what would happen if no flies died, etc., leading to extreme overpopulation. Still, I can’t accept any creature struggling, in pain, or dying.

@@AddieDianaC - I know what you mean. While driving with my right arm in a sling from a broken elbow, I saw a poor dove against a curb helplessly flapping it's wings. No one stopped or tried to avoid it. I stopped the car, got out and put the dove on the passenger side and took it to the wildlife shelter - they were still open. Sadly the dove didn't make it but I'm glad I gave it a place to pass with less noise and not trying to stay away from traffic. - Stephanie

sorry for the loss of your friend, most likely a sharpy got her. They are very active during they fall migration and quick as a flash of light. The sharp-shines and Cooper hawks are drawn to the feeders here in the winter. No doubt this activity didn't go un-noticed by a small keen eyed predator.

Thanks Allan, there was definitely no hawk around though. I was about 20 feet from where it all occurred and there were around a dozen jays there. No hawk would get past the jays without them going absolutely bonkers.

I like these kinds of videos best where you "tell the story" of a bird walk. What kind of video recorder are you using to capture this? Do you mount it on a tripod, or do you just have a very steady hold?

Beautiful views. You're very lucky to live there, and I'm sure you know that.🎃🎄🐦🐥 The nuthatches we see here in southern New England are different from yours; less colorful. I've heard that moose get drunk eating too many apples. Enjoy the natural world; few things are better for the soul than being out in an environment like that.

I agreed with your reasoning for not doing anything about the grey jays, but after a while of thinking about it longer, if I were you, I would get a squirt gun, fill it with water, and scare them out of the area. As winter comes and food dwindles, they may very well prey upon your smaller bird friends. Yes, they can go and find food, but encourage them to find it elsewhere. Nothing personal, just they have a better chance of surviving without preying on your little chickadees, than those chickadees have of surviving the winter with the grey jays around. And while Peanut is adorable, you don’t have to squirt him; he may leave on his own when his buddies leave.

Hmmm.. at 4:32 - did he take any seeds or was he expecting peanuts? 😉 So cool to see Canada Jays- haven't seen them for quite a few years. There used to be six of them here that were very friendly. BTW, can't take my eyes off of the photo at 12:48- maybe the most colors I've seen in a natural picture. Stunning! Thanks for the video!
