Thanks so much for posting this. I just started learning jazz, and I feel like a total beginner. For this lesson I was just keeping it to basics G major over the major sections, and E harmonic minor over the minor sections (exception being that small part w/ the flats which called for a couple Melodic minors). I especially appreciate the scrolling and accuracy. I'd have a lot of trouble figuring out where I'm screwing up if not for your addition, and taking the effort so all levels can approach. Some of these backing tracks start off okay, but by the B section I don't know what planet their chords are coming from. I see some people are complaining about Em6. Whatever, to that. You nailed the bulk of the FAKE BOOK aside from one little chord. Can't tell you how much I appreciate your backing tracks. They keep me sane, and calm as I stress my way through the difficulties of learning Jazz. Starting from the bottom after 20 years being self-taught is a harsh pill. Thank you for making my experience more pleasant. SUBBED. :)

@@guitareimprovisation No problem. man! Like I said, thank you! :) Still practicing your Backing Track, right now! Should be ready for tomorrow's lesson. I've got a good ear, but I'm a long way from the comfort of minors and majors. I'm sure everyone encounters these difficulties in the beginning. This is only my second improv assignment. Glad you have so much material, b/c after tomorrow I'll be needing you again for my third. lol. Have a great day, my man :) P.S - Those lame shredders have nothing on you Jazz musician's, that's for sure.

@@cx777o That's so awesome to hear, man. I can't shred to save my life. So, there. :) Jazz would be music for the sake of music. I've always really dug the more inspired roots of 60's and 70's music. I'm currently learning The Allman Bros. Fillmore West performance of Stormy Monday Blues. Check that one out. Dickie Betts always said, his style was so simple that anyone could play it.", but there's a big difference b/w this and "Jessica" lol. Even w/ the tab, it's just nuts. Probably b/c you just don't see tab like this anymore, man! I'd be curious to know what a guitarist of your skill thought about it. :)

Sometimes its really important, that you listen to an instrument or vocalist that has to breathe......Before you solo over a backing track.....(without getting into the whole debate about the pros of cons of the use of backing tracks, for me does it serve a purpose when i am alone practicing, yes this certain one we are using right here does.} no matter what level player you are, take it easy...Put on a beautiful trumpet solo over this tune, do not transcribe but absorb it....Hopefully now you are clear headed have a lot of beautiful inspiration....You are now ready to play at your level most of the slow ideas your ear is hearing pretty quickly....Now sing the melodies as you play them, if possible....piano, guitar, bass, etc......Some old school guy sat me down, he play in late 40-50s.and this was the first thing he made me do....I could not sleep and did not proof read, do the exercise for 3 days then go back and play a different song you been learning...See a difference??? If you do get in touch, this is no bullshit for the doubters and haters...Im much more a rock blues guitarist, who gets jazz gigs here and there, so i am reviewing all the material he taught me lately.....If you like to join me get in touch...Ronnie Fischer facebook...ruronnie2@gmail.com...this is not guitar lessons, its a program that has a start and finish....it takes 4months-1year to complete....im tired, get in touch if it works, this just a tiny piece.....plz do hate, just say nothing...or say it privately to me..ty

Sadly, AM a perfectionist lol.Have someone play a sax or Clarinet with it and see if you can see what I mean. It sounds good by itself and cant really tell where the weirdness is. Its something about how the guitar rings. dont notice it on your others much, but mainly on this one. could just be a stylistic thing. +Boristofu Povolotsky Look up "autumn leaves" on youtube and listen to some other players play through it. The idea is to use the harmony implied by the chords to construct your own improvisation! It doesnt always mean you need to play chord tones, but they help you to resolve melodic ideas or construct interesting contours. Basically, you can do what ever the hell you like! :D

Hi,let me say firstly that I really enjoy your traks. Concerning Autumn Leaves though, that Em6 chord has got to go .Although it's true that the tonic min. is usually a 6th, in this case the Em has a double role. It's a VI chord in the major key and a I chord in the minor key. When you're modulating from the minor to the major key, the min6th chord sounds terribly off. The min.7 or it's extensions ( 9th, 11th, or 13th) is the best choice. You could end the sequence with the min.6th, that's o.k. Hope you don't mind my constructive critisism.

Thanks Robert ! I like using m6 chords for the I, but in some case i like m7 too (in mes. 11 it works well, I guess that's what your were saying). But I don't think m6 sounds bad as you say. I randomly checked autumn leaves by Nat king cole (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGmXlppsiJ2Xedk) and at 1:14 the orchestra plays a m6. If you want a better version (uch better swing) it's here : kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIDZZJSfjaeAnrc Thanks for your comment, it was helpful. And if you have some nice versions with m7 chords don't hesitated to share them !

Hi, don't get me wrong, I do enjoy your tracks in general and the guitar comping sounds very good. I'm not trying to make you look bad either. I've been playing and teaching guitar for many,many years, and must have played this tune thousands of times. As I mentioned in another comment, this tune is definitely in the key of G major. Using a min.6 chord is risky business unless it's used as a passing chord. Extending it for two whole bars is not really a good idea though . Min.6 chords sound best in min. keys. A good example is Summertime. The song starts and ends in A min. Not the case with Autumn Leaves. Sorry, just trying to make a point.

I dont have nearly as much experience as you guys, but my teacher taught it to me this way (and that made sense): the Em starts with as Em;maj7, then over the course of those two bars moves down to Em6. Nicely completes the cycle of fourths AL goes through. The major 7th over the minor is carried over from the 3rd of the preceding B7, and then moves down in the movement which is expressed in many soloes and jazz versions of the song. When looping back to the beginning of the chorus, the m6 becomes the minor 3rd of the Am chord, or the 5th of the F# halfdim if going to the next part. Of course, the maj7 and m6 may both be left out since they are already part of the preceding and following chords, but I like this logic behind it. My 2 cents...
@tommy2318
@tommy2318 7 жыл бұрын
Chet Baker loves soloing on C, C#, D, D#, E on the minor root of AL for instance, which are the octave, maj7, m7, maj6, m6 of the Em chord.

The best advice I can give anyone is that before you re-arrange or try to improvise on a classic standard tune is to play the melody over the original chords.If you have any kind of musical sense, your ears will tell you what you can or can't do, and it's a mark of respect to the composer of that tune.

I can improvise on this pretty good on guitar but the piano needs a little work.. I know a fair amount of theory. Guitare Improvisation I give you a ✋ for that. planning to use my Bluetooth jam speaker to get good quality. One thing I like about your work is that it stays true to the score.. I don't get jam tracks that play minors or thirteenths where the dominant sevenths is what is called for, that just just throws off all the work you just did.. Do you have another music channel other than the jam track one? last but least do you have any free PDFs about music theory ECT.

PIANOSTYLE100 Thanks. yes I have free transcriptions and explanations about theory in French. But the best you can do is find a good teacher: if you're only looking for free stuff you're not gonna get very far to my point of view.

Guitare Improvisation I partially agree that you get what you pay for generally. there are many partially correct tutorials out there on the net.. I try to go the sources and work my way back. if I want to learn about geometry I read Euclid. Plane geometry hasn't changed. This requires work. So yes you get what you pay for.. I have owned and still own bookcases of music books. I trust printed things more than things on the net. So in that respect, things that are free sometimes have nobody with any kind of responsibility for what they write... and even though it may be extremely accurate it may be totally wrong as far as the the theory prescribes.

Yes I get what you say. Music doesn't change so much, but pedagogy can be great or awful depending on the teacher. For jazz piano I know "The Piano book" (Mark Levine) which is great, but there are others that I don't know. And what I was suggesting was more "if you want to save time and get right to the point find a teacher that teachs well, plays weel and has an approach that fits you".

I'd go with E minor. Same key signature as G major but the tonal center seems to arrive in measures seven and eight.

@Dhuzy64
@Dhuzy64 5 жыл бұрын
The triangle symbol means major 7th or 9th chord - for C, that corresponds to C E G (the triad), B (7th) and D (9th). The percent symbol means continue playing the most recent chord. The circle with a slash through means half-diminished, or minor 7th chord with a flatted fifth.

Sorry for the late response. In context, it should be F#, A, C, E. I hope that makes sense, and as always you can switch the notes and change the order around.

Ø means half diminished, or a min7b5. So basically F#Ø means F# half diminished or F#m7b5 (F# A C E). And yes, % means repeat the measure before. Hope this helps, and happy playing!
