Bill sounds distinctly himself on any guitar - the tonal clarity, the melodic angularity, the peculiar note lengths, the little thoughtful pauses, the yearning scent of restraint.

Talking strictly gear, the Collings guitar I'm sure is exceptional, but the heart of that guitar is the Ellis pickup. It was built around that pickup, for that pickup, because of that pickup, which is one of a kind extraordinary.

To be fair, that's simply his style. It's characteristic of his collaborative style. He had the same body language last night at the Schubert with John Medeski and his own trio. And his synergy with his bassist is remarkable.

Without question. When I heard Julian play, I thought immediately of Bill Frisell. There is such a deep connection in their styles. To see them together is lovely. To see their connection is a thrill, an honor, a joy. It’s remarkable to see how much they enjoy the collaboration, and how they fill in each other’s lines and harmonies. Thanks to both.
