Regarding your berley cage, may I suggest you get either a hard styrene float or even a ski tow rope float and thread the cage's cord through the float and then re- attach it to the cages bridle. That way, if you happen to accidentally drop your hand caster over the side, you will not lose the whole rig. A couple of years back I was pulling a solo all nIghter of Carrum and nodded off for about 10 minutes. When I woke up my hand caster was no where in the boat and my beloved, bloody expensive stainless, lead weighted cage was left on the bottom. I put in another session two nights later on the same GPS mark and heard some penguins calling so I turned on my spotty to check them out and there was my red and white ski rope float bobbing on the surface not 10 metres away! I got the entire rig back thanks to the float. I then upgraded to a larger styrene float with enough boyancy to stay on the surface no matter what the cage and loaded hand caster are doing should misfortune strike again.
