I have never collected before and I am going to be looking for Autunite and others real soon. I found a good place to look for spots. Your pegmatite video & this one have helped a bunch. Thanks. I will be looking around Spruce Pine NC. Its the only place I have found in NC that seems to have good of possibilities. Any tips & tricks for a newbie looking for radioactive minerals?
@GeoForge3 жыл бұрын
I don't have any tips for you on how to find radioactive minerals besides using a black light for Autunite. I would recommend searching online to see what minerals have been found around your location to get an idea of where to look as well. A good website to get started with that is mindat. I hope you find something nice, good luck!

@GeoForge Жыл бұрын
It is the one by Mt Spokane. Finger nail sized chunks are the good ones. If it got all over your clothes, then you might be at a risk for breathing it in too which isn't good either. I would wear a mask of some kind when I would dig it up. It usually gets everywhere once I bring it back to clean the bigger samples up. Tiny glowing flakes everywhere.

I have a weird looking radioactive stone. It deems to have been molten, has two more or less flat sides at 120 degrees angle, and has a silvery metallic inclusion that does not rust or tarnish... How can I identify it?
@giovannib.ortizhuanca4105 Жыл бұрын
You would have to look up a list of radioactive minerals and look for photos of each of the minerals you find. Maybe you have a uraninite or samarskite, but since you say the inclusion is metallic, then maybe not, but the color and its type of crystallization always influence.

@GeoForge4 жыл бұрын
@@fasteddie258269 A good Geiger counter will detect this stuff. I would like to get one eventually to help look for bigger chunks at this mine and in other locations. As far as storing, a plastic or glass container with a lid should do fine. This stuff releases radon gas over time which is something to avoid. Over all, this stuff is relatively safe to have.

@@donysiswanto8422 The radiation is not to much of a concern if exposed to it for a short period of time. The worst thing to do is inhale or ingest any of the dust from the Autunite. It is still important to wash any of the mineral dust off and not hold it or touch it for long periods of time.

Is that safe? Obviously I don't know much about radioactivity but is it safe to just be out around uranium and take it home like that?
@GeoForge4 жыл бұрын
Autunite is mostly safe. The biggest dangers are if you inhale the dust or ingest it but that goes with ever rock and mineral. It is radio active but its not super dangerous. If you handle it with your hands, just wash them afterwards. Storing them in a plastic or glass container is enough shield yourself from the radio activity. If you store them in a container, it should be opened outside because over time they decay and produce radon gas. So if stored properly, its safe to have.

Not enough info on self protection. No mention of collecting at night?
@GeoForge2 жыл бұрын
We used a UV light to find the minerals and it is best to go at night. As far as protection, autunite is a radioactive mineral and its fine to collect it and have it on display but one should avoid ingesting it, breathing it in or having it on you for long periods of time. A proper display container is also a good idea for it since it tends to flake.
