Course deviation allows you to deviate the extended centerline to a runway in the event of obstacle clearance (mountains, radio towers, etc) or other things youd need to be clear of. (Stateside bases have a ton of restrictions like noise abatement zones where a 10-15 degree deviation to a 1/2 mile final are required. EA-6 and AV8's are loud and 500 feet over your house gets old )

Another tip for a perfect descent rate, take your approach speed, divide by 2 and add a zero. Works for nearly all aircraft.

Just came across this - a few real world considerations I’d like to pass on! - Dont chase the localizer and glideslope needles. The closer you get to the localizer (which ultimately operates on the principle of a VOR, and as we know about VOR’s they get more sensitive the closer you get, same with TACAN, etc.) the more precise and minor your corrections need to be. In this example you tended to overshoot your corrections and “snake” around the glideslope and localizer. Small corrections. 2. If you get close to 3/4 deflection under the slope or full deflection above, fly the missed approach. To get back on path may require a steep descent or climb you may not be able to make safely. At that point, it’s best to break off the approach and try again. 3. In this example you flew the AWLS below CAT I minimums (200ft DH), using your BARO altimeter. When flying an instrument approach in an airplane with a radar altimeter - use that instead. In this case you flew it all the way to the surface, which isn’t how low it’s intended to get you. The AWLS is intended to get you down to 200ft for a visual landing, try it again but with an overcast layer at 500 AGL. Then do it again at 250. You’ll see what I mean. Otherwise beautifully done :)

12:28 if you’re doing a circling approach by doing an offset it brings you closer to the other runway than just sticking to your original runway, breaking through the clouds, and then doing your turn to the desired runway.

If you set the nav mode into true instead of magnetic then do you not have to correct by the 6 degrees difference?
@launchsquid

You need to resist the urge to chase the AWLS lines when you're close to the runway, even though they are falling away rapidly your deviation isn't actually growing. The radio "beam" is actually a cone shape, rather narrow but still a cone. This means at 10 miles you could be showing directly on glide slope but actually be a few feet below or above the optimum. Conversely, up close you could see the line falling away as if your climbing above the optimum but irl you're still only feet above it. when you're close to the runway the deviations look many times worse than they are just as the same deviations would look small and inconsequential far out. This is why the end of your approach is so stressful but the beginning is well in hand, your flying isn't degrading, just the AWLS guides are magnifying your deviations and making them look much bigger than they are.

Great and very helpful guide as always! One question though, is there any reason you couldn't do a STOL landing in final stages of approach to make it slightly less stressful? Or would that actually have the opposite effect and make it worse, just thinking if you could get the speed down with STOL it might make it easier on the nerves as more time to adjust?

I know this video is a couple years old but I have a question. When you set up your initial course line for 68° (-6° for magnetic north) why not just set it up for 74° and then change the azimuth -6° in the AWLS?

Hi Cap. I understand that you would only use "receive" instead of "Transmit/Receive" on TACAN in a war scenario cause apparently enemy aircraft can detect you? Don't know how true that is.

There is that possibility, especially if you had an EW aircraft listening for TACAN DME interrogations. In addition, DME can only accommodate so many aircraft at once before it gets saturated (for civilian VOR/DME, I believe the limit is 100 aircraft), so in certain high-traffic environments, it may be necessary to go receive-only to prevent saturating the DME.

Sorry but I have to ask, is there any reason why you couldn't just 'plug-in' the airfield's ILS / AWLS channel instead of trying to intercept the TACAN with just the HSI? Reason why I ask is that there is no HUD symbology for the TACAN radial interception, yet (apparently) once you program in the relevant ILS / AWLS channel, it also programs in the relevant TACAN channel and you get the radial intercept line on the HUD. Sure you get no GS information until you are 10NM from the runway, but it would appear that the localiser capture is much further out. Does this AWLS localiser HUD symbology incorporate the TACAN and correct radial, or is this unreliable data until GS intercept? I'm "Guessing" that perhaps you would still need to input the TACAN radial, but all this guessing should be very indicative that I'm a little lost on this topic and am wondering why there are no HUD symbols to help capture said TACAN radial (very useful), like in the Hornet? Is this a feature of the Harrier, or is this another "feature" from Razbam?
@grimreapers
@grimreapers 6 жыл бұрын
Yes BUT I found dfoing it that way almost impossible to follow the symbology. Maybe Im doing something wrong, but the only way I can get ILS to become useable is to do HSI tacan and then handoff to ILS.
