I really don't like the original trilogy for westerners as they discluded Japanese audio for games that take place in Japan. To even now the creators literally made this game not mentioned or non-canon in a sense. Rei never shows up again and Miku regresses in her survivors guilt in the 5th entry.
@marbles86416 ай бұрын
This is probably the best/scariest in the series, held only mildly back by the back tracking of the same location ever time you sleep/explore the manner and the fact you can max out your inventory by sleeping and exiting sleep regularly, since the items respawn. I can't wait till you play Game 5, since it links directly back to the first three again.. in the worst narrative way possible!

I love this series. It holds a special place in my heart as my sister and I played it a lot after our dad died. We spent HOURS upon HOURS playing FF2 to beat every single mode. She'd be on walkthrough duty, though often she'd get too focused on her fanfiction and forget to give me a heads up on incoming boss fights until I was begin attacked. Leading to "Oh yeah by the way boss fight" still being a running joke between us nearly twenty years later. I can remember playing 3 so much that when she called asking for help I was able to give her step by step directions through the house without even looking.

Fatal Frame 3 speedrunner here (NG+ mostly, current WR holder in all difficulties). About Kei's combat; you're right that he is far and away the hardest combat wise. His camera is significantly weaker and his filament is hard to gauge. That's why you're *not supposed to fight with him*. He's given the hide ability specifically to escape ghosts. Fighting is for a last resort. That's why his mandatory fights are relatively comparatively few and take place in more open floor plan type rooms. And due to the weak power of his camera, it changes which lenses work best. In NG+, you still use the Blast lens on him instead of the Crush lens like you do on Rei. Also, funny story; in NG+ with fully upgraded everything, you one-shot Reika on Easy and Normal, and two-shot her on Hard and Nightmare. And another point; this is the first Fatal Frame game where the good ending is considered canon, which is hilarious because it's only available on NG+ (you can complete a sidequest in Hour X or XII with Kei to get him an item which saves him from Reika). Yuu, Mafuyu, and Kei were all best buds; you can catch Kei talking in his sleep, and it's either about Mayu or *both* Mafuyu and Yuu. AND EVEN MORE CONNECTIONS; Rei's last name is Kurosawa, like Sae and Yae, but is not related to them as far as we know, though Yuu is a direct descendant of the Camera Obscura's creator. And lastly... Miku chasing after Mafuyu rather than trying to escape the manor is canon. *Gestures at Fatal Frame V and a certain... Product of their interaction*.

I feel so good seeing everyone confirm how bad Kei sucks. At the same time, it's not fun finding out that I'm dumb and could have hidden more to help. Ha! I do wish I could return to a time when I wasn't aware of the whole Miku and Mafuyu thing from part 5.....

Glad you got around to my favorite Fatal Frame. I especially loved the house segments. Had a Silent Hill 4 vibe to coming back to room 302 till it eventually starts getting haunted as well. I LOVED how her house/apartment changed and became progressively more haunted as the game progressed. It put Silent Hill 4: The Room to shame in that regard. It was a slow build up and masterful at the scares. Stop reading and experience it for yourself, but here are some moments that got me good... -Strange breathing noises... look all around seeing nothing. Then I look up at the skylight and see I'm being watched. -Passing by the bathroom as I have dozens and dozens of times before but having a bloody hand print at one point. -Waking up and looking around the room... the noticing someone was hiding under the bed. Had to change my underwear. -Her cat hissing and yowling at... something in another room. The game LOVES to mess with you, but it knows not to do it frequently. Its a SLOW build. I so wish there were more games that were nothing more than a haunted house with a slow build.

Anyone confused on why Yuu (or anyone) who was not dealing with the curse would be there should look into the far shore and Obon. The series touches on real world practices. This is why we see lanterns with spirits surrounding them. These are guiding them to the afterlife and the temple is a flood gate to that world. When Rei walks into the water she is now partly touching the land of the dead.

I believe at some point the story mentions that Reika is somehow able to trap the souls of literally everyone as they past from life to the afterlife in her sleep dimension. Something about trying to be with her boyfriend again by stopping the flow of souls and effectively halting the cycle of birth, death and rebirth. So that's why Yuu (along with a couple thousand other souls) is there.

To answer your question Avalanche ma man, Kei THOUGHT Reika wasn't nailed down, hence his suggestion to nail her back in the chamber, which is also why when he gets into the chamber he is horrified to realize Reika's body was already nailed down, but her spirit was refusing to sleep. Reika didn't just turn evil, but rather in viewing what happened to her unfair, she pulled everyone with torment into the manor to instead force them to relive their sorrows over and over instead of shouldering them herself. Kei manages to find his way there due to his stress over Mio's worsening condition as she is being taken by the manor because of the torment she feels from killing Mayu. SPOILER FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO PLAY That's also why while Kei failed, Rei managed to successfully make Reika pass on; because Reika's dead body had its eyes constantly looking at her lover due to that being the position the family head cruelly left her in and when Rei closed her eyes, Reika's spirit was finally able to rest. Kei wanted to forcefully put Reika back to sleep without resolving her pain, which made her angry and she killed him, while Rei at the end understood that the ritual wasn't the problem; it was the spirit that needed to be put to rest unlike 1 and 2 where the issue was the ritual itself having been left incomplete/impure. Remember, in 1, Kirie has to accept her role as the sacrifice to set everyone free, and in 2, Yae's spirit returns to Sae which finally convinces Sae to let the ritual be completed (through Mio and Mayu), setting everyone free. In 3, Reika was way beyond that point already, she didn't care about the ritual or setting her victims free, she wanted to rest but she can't because she has to always look at the corpse of her lover, resulting in her rage. Note that even during her boss fight she keeps repeating how the torment never ends because she can't be with the man she loved yet has to look at his dead body. Remember her words: "Over and over...please...I don't want to see...anymore..." Sorry for the rant, the third entry holds a very special place in my heart and it was the very first game where I got fully emotional, like bawling emotional after I finished it.

Listening to some of your comments as it goes on, with the knowledge of the "full lore" has got me excited for you to continue to unravel the lore. Yuu was already helping Kei with the folklore before he died. Rei's loneliness and Yuu's relevance with the lore could have given his soul the capacity to be tied down with the manor. I always felt like he was trying to help im the way a ghost can. Just remember, no matter what anyone says. There are only 4 Fatal Frame games.

The thing with Kei is that along with the hide ability, he has a high HP and is able to perform actions like jumping between roofs and moving heavy objects. The devs probably want to make his gameplay significantly unique compared to the others (Rei being all rounded? And Miku having the strongest camera with the overcharge), but the 2-bar charge camera is definitely a bit too much. Fortunately, the very next installment has the same formula (three protagonist with differing feats) but with the Kei-counterpart being far more unique on his own.

So happy to see another video. FF3 was my second favorite game for the longest time but is sort of fighting for IV since it launched last year. The themes of 3 are so sad when you watch how the characters deal with surviving such trauma. It's gonna be why the ending for Rei is something special because of how well it was done. It's also why I really liked Reika as the antagonist as well once you get more info on the story. The fact that your apartment slowly becomes haunted constantly messed with me. Whenever I exited my dream and left the room just to see the static effect, I would be on high alert. Seeing the feet peeking out of the closet or going back to your room just for the camera to change to under your desk are the moments I remember the most. Also, I hate whoever thought it was a good idea for Miku's crawling sections to be in first person. That crawling woman scarred me as a child lmao

I know what you mean about the visual appeal of graphics in this era. You know what it is? It's the lack of complex shaders + baked vertex lighting. PS1 had no material shaders, but PS2 still had very limited offerings. You basically had a matte material and a shiny material at best. All these other fancy shaders didn't arrive until PS3(although Shadow of The Colossus had that cool low tech fur material). This meant that all the material definitions needed to be expressed in 2d with the textures. Need something that feels like leather? The texture artist had to paint it on the 2d map on a small texture size. It gives these games a very hand-painted artistic look vs. the procedural look of modern materials + realistic lighting you see in a new AAA game.
@AvalancheReviews6 ай бұрын

Kei's the weakest character, yes, but I feel Miku's section was the hardest to play for me. Maybe because I don't know how to properly use her special attack, who knows. I'm glad that you like this one the best, and I believe many agree it's the most refined of the trilogy. Sadly, the jumping between characters surprised me and it took too long for me to grasp, and ended up disliking it a bit. The story is good, though, and I like the ending a lot. About the nailing part, the gang believes the ritual failed because of what you mentioned and she wasn't nailed yet at that point. By doing that, it would essentially rest her soul and the manor would disappear. Of course, then Kei saw she was already nailed so it's a bust and Rei had to "kill" her using the Camera Obscura as the only way. I forgot the real reason why Yuu appeared, but I think Reika technically dragged his soul into the manor to trap Rei and the same thing happened with Mafuyu for Miku. Also, you can save Kei in the 2nd playthrough, but it might be non-canon just like how Mayu can be saved in 2.

I've been waiting for this video!! Love your content. I love that you are exploring the franchise of Fatal frame. Fatal frame 3 is one of my favourite games of the franchise. 3 and 4 are my top picks. Unfortunately 5 didn't quite hit the mark for me interms of atmosphere, mechanics and story. I'd love to hear you thoughts on the subject when you get to that entry. I do love that this franchise has a tendency to put female protagonists as the main players. Is a girl, I do admit I find I do find games more engaging playing as a female character. This is what I loved about the Resident Evil franchise was the ability to play as multiple characters. Similar with silent hills spin off of forbidden siren. I kind of agree and disagree with your pointbon being snatched out of the manner of sleep just its getting was frustrating but in saying that I did like the anticlimactic feeling as it felt genuine to what its like waking up from an intense dream. To me it plaid into the realism of waking up before you finish a dream.💝💝

I can 10000% see where you're coming from on part 5. Also, I tend to prefer playing as women in games too. I'm really not sure why. Come to think of it, i think survival horror games tend to have disproportionately more women in main character roles. Maybe that's another reason I'm drawn to them???

In the original story conception of Fatal frame 5, Miku was supposed to enter the ghost marriage with Kei from fatal frame 3 although, this was later changed to Mafuyu. Which i under stand her desire to see her brother again although the idea of Miu being Mafuyu and Miku's daughter is kinda werid even though the don't get physical in her conception but still. If you look at Miu's design, you can deffo see more of Kei and Miku in her. Plus her name was very close to Mio who was Kei's niece. For mire deep dives into the lore of the Fatal frame franchise, I can't reccomend enough the youtube channel Tara A Devlin. Her fatal frame content is so indepth! 💝💝

While 2 is my favorite, 3’s vibes are absolutely unmatched- I legit listen to “Fatal Frame 3 soundscapes” to work/sleep because it’s so weirdly soothing. 😂 Never liked the run/hide segments though; it keeps me away from replaying it as much as the first 2 (I thought 2 gave us the right amount of it with Kusabi and Sae). Also kinda wish they went with Mio being the 3rd protagonist as originally envisioned, but Kei really grew on me. Such a lovely story about grief- the ending gets me so emotional!

Yeah I think the overall exploration in FF2 was better because it wasn't broken up by the day and night sections like 3. IF we could combine the two, we'd have the perfect Fatal Frame game.

Haven't watched this as I want to finish the games first, but the Switch version is great in portable mode as the Switch itself (inc motion controls) may as well be a camera. I seriously believe it's the definitive way to play.

Looking back on it, I think this game may be the reason why I didn't have that much difficulty with the previous two games, lol, this was the game that got me started with the franchise, and for some reason I ended up going in backwards order, so by the time I played the first, I was already well versed with the combat and other systems. It really is unanimous among everyone in the fanbase that Kei had the worst gameplay by far, which is a shame considering he's our first playable dude, I think that's why our next playable guy ends up feeling like a do-over with how awesome he is during gameplay. I'm glad my favorite entry in the series became your favorite too! These retrospectives are fire!

I was having fun, but "sappy j-pop" put me off. That was Tsuki Amano singing her song "Koe". She is one of my favorite artists of all time. She has some some pop songs, but most of her genre is rock. She's done every ending song in this franchise from Akai Chou through Nuregarasu no Miko. If they get to a 6th game I'm sure she'll be there for that too.

Really appreciate the video setting and port comparison stuff. As far as the "are the visuals good" question, I'd judge it for the time. This game looks amazing and I'd have definitely been jaw dropped on release. Shenmue is my favorite example though. It looks quaint and silly today perhaps, but on release it felt so insanely realistic down to the smallest details that I'd absolutely factor that in its favor. Thankfully having felt that playing it at the time it still amazes me just in how it holds up compared to games from the same year. Biased though, much as today's visuals blow my mind and HL Alyx especially made me feel like a kid in 96 seeing Mario 64 all over again, I'll take well realized 90s/early 2000s visuals everytime I can.
@AvalancheReviews5 ай бұрын
I wonder if people who weren't raised in the PS2 generation can look at graphics like this and still appreciate them for looking impressive? I actually think about that a lot.
@jamesshipley91645 ай бұрын
My kids do, but again probably bias there haha. I can't imagine anyone looking at something like Haunting Ground and not being visually impressed though. Just glad I got to see the rapid progress we made in the 80s through 2000s where every couple years games blew our minds at how real they looked. A lot of that "realism" aged poorly and the more stylized stuff has shown to be more timeless, but I still recall being impressed then and it hasn't fully rubbed off. Nowadays it seems we can't take visuals much further, I feel bad for this generation missing out on that sense of wonder and having a rougher time appreciating older classics. I often have that issue with Hayes Code era films though so guess I kinda get it? I can appreciate some classics but it's often the time capsule vibe that sells it. Harder for me to try to appreciate it like someone who was there would have and bet games are similar to the younger crowd.

I only hope that they will remaster all three Fatal Frame games. With better controls, and good amount of frame rates. Plus they put the extra features from the Xbox ports in it. Don't know if they'll remaster the original FF2 or its Wii remake. Either of them will be good.

@AvalancheReviews so heads up the next one 4 you are probably better off playing the remake first then the wii one after, its defiantly a case of quality life improvements practically makes the remake a replacement of the original(the original suffers from Dev's first time using motion controllers in a game. the 5th one defiantly improves and makes use of them a lot better) oh and the story was a collaboration with mr. suda 51 himself maybe why I consider the 4th one to have best story and enemy design in the series so far something to look forward to. but for real do the remake first you'll have a much better time

I can understand why some might like this the best, and it certainly fixes some issues from previous entries. The ghost design is better than FF2, and it has some of the best scares in the series. The dream setting is a good idea and I like how they bleed over into the waking world. But, I find it a slog to play. Even when I had way more time for games, I found it overly long and navigating the mansion to be tedious. Playing as Kei is also a chore. And the recycled plot got old by this game. Still, it's well worth a play and may end up being your favourite too. So track it down if you can. Apparently physical copies are getting pricey.
