I think the idea behind the manikin monster scenes were to show that other people were getting drawn into Silent Hill because of things that have happened in their own past. Basically that there were other stories going on in Silent Hill at the same time that were unrelated to the cult plotline. I actually liked this idea... I didn't like it's execution, but I liked the idea. I've always thought of it as the actions of the cult 'awoke' the town as a Genius Loci and it drew other people towards itself causing the events of all the non-Alessa related games. The town had spiritual power before but the cult's actions made it made it into something both more powerful and more dangerous. When SH2 (the game) came out I assumed that it was happening at the same time as the original game but was simply happening in another part of the town and never the twain shall meet. So the manikin scene in Revelations would just be Heather briefly intruding in someone else's movie.

I would almost argue that this film is worth seeing in a "so bad, it's good" kinda way. I had bought a used copy for cheap and watched it with a group of friends (some _Silent Hill_ fans, some not), and it got quite a few big laughs out of us. (The pop-tart jump-scare and the awkward hard cut to the giggling man on the bus being stand-outs.) And to their credit, the writer/director M.J. Bassett (formerly "Michael J. Bassett") actually apologized for the film because even she hated how it turned out and accepts all the blame. I read a fairly recent interview where she described it as a "nightmare dance" where she was trying to balance pleasing producers with trying to make a sequel to the first film while also trying to make it more like the games... and it just turned into a cluster-fuck early on and never recovered.

I'm not about to leap to the defense of this trash fire. But it must be said that even the greatest screenwriter on the planet would be unable to churn out something of quality when confronted with the studio mandates to include all of the necessary "branding" like Pyramid Head and sexy nurses, regardless of context, while also suffocating the production with a miser's budget. This wasn't made by a company who has any interest in the source material beyond furthering a brand and franchise, as a machine to produce sequels. No decision maker on this project cared beyond making an audience point at the screen and say, "ooh, hey, that's the guy from the other movie! Can't wait for the next one!"

That's a really good point. I'm sure the creative staff were having to check a lot of boxes during production.

They ruined every character, including pyramid head. Had they had a proper director/screenwriting team that put this closely to the original story, they could have actually made something good, maybe even great. I think some games are super-hard to translate, as the narrative is very “video gamey’, or the actual gameplay doesn’t really lend itself to a film adaptation. But a game like Silent Hill should be layup. Every aspect of the foundation is solid. And there isn’t the disconnect between narrative and gameplay that you see in a lot of other games. There’s no cognitive dissidence. It all ties in together cleanly. And even when you look at the stories and how the town functions (acting as a personal hell/purgatory based upon the ‘sins’ of the individual trapped/haunted by the town), the franchise readily lends itself to telling new stories, meaning you could take the town and workings of silent hill and easily apply them to a new protagonist without a ton of difficulty. And if you wanted to follow the storyline of SH1 & 3, it should/could be even easier, as it’s a very easy story to follow once you work it out. While this wasn’t actually “the worst movie/video game adaptation ever”... it certainly was the best franchise to adapt into a film, and they just screwed the pooch.

Hey man sorry to hear about your losses. Ive luckily not lost friends that way myself but I agree that's a serious issue. I was on trip once with a friend, we went to watch our football team on the road. My buddy has family out there and knows a few people so we joined a big tailgate. After the game we hopped in one of his friends cars to catch a ride. I was smashed myself but I could instantly tell this driver was pretty much on my level and should not be driving us. I started speaking up saying we need to switch drivers. I was being persistent and would not drop it, every one was getting annoyed, calling me a "buzz kill". And trust me it's hard to speak up sometimes around new people but I was like I'd rather they all hate me and I make it home alive. They actually ignored me but before we even got out the parking lot the driver hit a curb. At that point everyone realized I wasn't just being paranoid and we pulled over and switched drivers. I believe if I had not spoken up, considering we barely made it out the parking lot, I may of not made it home that night

I have two DUI’s, both in the same month. Was in a horrible place mentally and living a very self destructive lifestyle. Both times I was driving home from the same bar via the same back roads. Thought at the time that I was only putting myself at risk but that was because I had isolated myself completely and had no rational perspective. ANYWAY, the point I’m getting at is that you can justify anything to yourself as long as you never question your actions and thoughts. You can’t expect anyone to keep you in check because as soon as you do you stop checking on yourself. To me, I had a lot of friends that had left me. I thought I was just a loser, not fun, etc. and that was why. We hung out together and they seemed to like me; that was all it took for me to stop checking on myself and think others around me were. Now I realize they weren’t my friends and I was just being delusional. Now I don’t have friends, I keep good company that I can trust. A rose by any other name is still a rose and the same is true about friends. That word is as meaningless as the word “rose” to someone pricked by its thorn. That being said, having some “friends” that have died because of it is not an excuse to go saying people should be put to death “at the least”. That is a thought made in response to the outcome and doesnt take into consideration the cause. Yes, be mad at me or the individual or whoever. Our judicial system will carry out the punishment. If you want to change what that punishment is then go for it. Simply stating your opinion about the outcome doesn’t change anything and is directly adding to the problem. If you ever are in a situation where you *could* “let” a friend drive drunk that means you have wasted your time yelling at the condemned while ignoring the people you claim are your “friends”.
@Kullen644 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry to hear about your losses at the hands of drunk driving, it’s a terrible thing and I agree with you on the sentencing. As for the movie, complete doo doo ass. Couldn’t agree more. They really could have done something great with it too. I didn’t like the first SH movie either but at least they tried. I think it suffered from being an early 2000’s film, the worst decade for horror. The director was probably trying to please too many people at the time. I think the next movie really has a chance to shine with the resurgence of indie horror and smart 70’s style films like Hereditary, Us, Get Out, Oculus, The Lighthouse and whatnot. Hoping they adapt the second game this time. It’s not my favorite but it seems like the prime candidate for a film adaptation. Now go watch the taste of this movie out with the Sonic movie haha.

The film tried to combine elements of both the 1st film and the game, as a result, it was quite bad as a standalone product. I liked Christophes film adaptation, it was an adaptation that is arguably one of the best game to film movies I've seen. I get why some people didnt like it but as a stand alone film I enjoyed it and really got involved in the story it presented. It is clear Christophe has heaps of passion for the series and it's a damn shame this mess was his originals "sequel". I hope Christophe retcons the whole film with his sequel because even giving this film the satisfaction of a story connection in the next would be disheartening.

It's not the worse video game adaptation that still goes to Alone in the Dark but it had so much potential. If you watch the directors debut film Deathwatch (Silent Hill in WW1) you can see clearly why he was hired. It just unfortunate that the writing suck and so many characters where mishandled.

Tbh the first silent hill movie changed my life. I was too young to play the OG games when they came out, so I discovered silent hill through the 2006 movie. I absolutely love it even if I can see its flaws (like the pyramid head nonsense). So I was beyond excited when they announced revelations. But then I checked who the director was... And I knew we were in for a disaster. I think the only reason why it's the worst film you've ever seen is that you've probably haven't seen other films directed by this man. It seems that all his movies are THIS bad. I must admit his SH is a particular level of shitty, though. I decided to act like SH revelations never happened and wiped most of it from my memory. You've reminded me how insanely bad it actually was. Thank you for this great vid and your whole SH retrospective series, it has been a pleasure to watch, and we share about the same views on the first movie so I was really glad to hear a more nuanced opinion on it. Let's hope Christopher Gans is gonna make something good!

With a name like Revalations, you should come out of the movie with less questions than when you came into it.

While I won't defend this movie, I will say this: The most unrealistic thing in any of the Silent Hill games is when Cybil Bennet gives Harry Mason her sidearm.

8:05 Don't quote me on this, but I believe that Silent Hill: Revelation's director, Michael Bassett, has said that there was already a script for the sequel (perhaps written by Roger Avery before the incident) that he opted not to use. So instead Michael Bassett wrote his own script. I just thought he wrote a bad script, but now that you mention it, he probably incorporated elements from the original script. If so that would be very interesting, perhaps we have a glimpse of what the story could have been. On that note, the first film's director, Christophe Gans, will be returning to make another Silent Hill film. He hasn't said if he was going to do a sequel, an adaptation of one of the games, or an original - but I think it would be neat if he did a proper sequel to his film and used the original script. But whatever he chooses, I'm looking forward to it.

8:58 In the original film's script, Rose asks Christabella if they're Christian and she explicitly says no, they're manacheists (or however you spell it). I think they only appear outwardly as a Christian cult bc of the Bible verses and our western notions of cults in America.

9:38 I also have a lot of words about how Pyramid Head doesn't need to ONLY be only for James Sunderland. I'll just say that Silent Hill manifests monsters from various characters, antagonist and protagonist, and how there can be varying incarnations of the same monster across the franchise (take Mandarin from Silent Hill 2 and Closer in Silent Hill 3). Masahiro Ito also made a little comic with Pyramid Head existing outside of James Sunderland, however he felt that Red Pyramid was specific to James, so he made him white in his comic. So it makes me think there can be various incarnations of the same monster. There can still be specific monsters, but perhaps the rules can be bent. But I will agree that Pyramid Head is the mascot and cashgrab of the series, but he is just so iconic, and his appearances can be justified to an extent.

But yeah Silent Hill: Revelation is a pretty bad movie. There's lots of plotholes and reconning. Michael Basset lied to us when he said on his blog "sequel first, adaptation second". And like what you said, the transitions are really bad if non-existent. The first film was better overall, whilst I would say the second film had its moments. Its my guilty pleasure. And an interesting thing you mentioned, Alessa has created the monsters in Silent Hill, so the question would be "what's up with the sexy nurses?" Well they were in the first movie too, but their weird moaning was amped up here. Nothing at the top of my head, just fanservice like Pyramid Head. Oh and the monsters were really lame here, nothing super scary or monstrous, just people in costume. And that bit with the cult guy dying when Heather took off his mask, Vincent explained that they believed the air was poisonous so it manifested itself as something real to them. Its following the idea in Silent Hill 3, where your beliefs and nightmares can come to life (think of Heather reading the memos in the subway about the ghosts of people who have died, and to be careful of those locations or you could die too, and then Heather is pushed onto the subway tracks so this fear has fulfilled itself). But Revelation did not execute that idea well or clearly illustrated this, instead its told to us and it only happened once to one guy. It bore no consequence. Heather is told this but it doesn't carry over to her like in the game, or even to Claudia and Vincent who are part of the cult. So yeah, could have been better, definitely.

The total lack of transition may be an over correction due to film critics bashing the prior films abundance of "pointless running around". Critics oblivious to the fact that was another deliberate, subtle reference to the gameplay.

The original movie, as a stand alone thing, is pretty alright. It's got some plot holes and a LOT of contrivances, but overall a decent and cool looking horror movie. Revelations is not only more holey than swiss cheese and the pope combined, but can't even remain consistent with THE FIRST FILM. It's got shitty acting, shitty effects, shitty dialogue, shitty writing, and shitty cinematography. It's one of the worst movies I've seen with any sort of budget. And I absolutely love it. Ironically, to be sure, but I love it. It's so divorced from SH at this point I don't feel like it's a corruption of something I love, and how absolutely nothing like it's source material it is is also hilarious. So not only is it a hilariously terrible movie in it's own right, but it's a hilariously terrible adaptation too! I don't wanna wipe it from the timeline, I wanna put it on sometimes with someone I can point out all the wrong things it got about both the game AND the other movie.

The dvd for this movie sat in the backseat of my old Toyota for about four years before I totaled the car and scrapped it for a new one. It’s in a junk yard somewhere along with the dvd. I never watched it and probably never will but I’ve always heard good things about it.

If this is the worst movie (and video game movie) you've seen, don't try watching Uwe Boll's House of the Dead. I watched it in a theater where at least 6 people were smart enough to walk out and demand a refund by the halfway point. I was one of the other 6 that stayed to poison my soul.

4:53 watching this scene from 2020, I almost had a death stranding feeling about it. When I watch this movie in theatre, I almost felt this movie could be much better if it were a Musical!!!!! It looked so strange and I didn’t know (as a long term hardcore fan of silent hill), if this was supposed to be a horror film or something experimental. But I had to say the nurses were awesome
