Thank you for this articulate and in depth review. I was wondering if the device can be used with an HP laptop. Even if not, it's a great buy in my opinion from what I've seen because my wife and I would like to watch movies in the living room without waking the kids at night.

It should work, but your laptop probably has Bluetooth so your range of options are far wider than just the Avantree unit, Jon.

If I have an external surround sound bar connected to my TV via optical/hdmi arc, can I still plug the transmitter into the TV separately so they are both connected at the same time? Then if I don't want to use my sound bar, I can turn it off and just pick up the headphones to use instead? Would that work?

I believe that should work. Note that I would expect some latency if you wanted to have the soundbar live and soft, with the headphones louder to compensate, but I haven't actually tested that configuration to find out.

Would the latency issue resolve itself if I turn the sound bar off and just use the headphones? If I have them both plugged into my TV I think I should just have to change the audio output on the TV to toggle back and forth, if for example, I use AUX with the transmitter but Optical for the sound bar (which I personally don't think that is a big inconvenience).

I'm not saying it *will* happen, more that it may happen. And yes, disabling one will allow you to avoid the issue if it arises.

When the transmitter is turned on my wifi slows down so much it times out. How do you fix this.

Mine wont pair. So how about your video shows them magically pairing and explain why they have a pairing button on the stand and headphones. Ive tried everythig and they wont pair. And not one video Ive seen shows them actaullay paired and working.

Mine were paired out of the box as far as I recall. Check with Avantree; sounds like something's wrong with yours?

Does this unit shut down the TV speakers? Do I have to disconnect it to get sound back to the TV speakers? Thank you

That depends on how your TV is designed. Most modern TVs have the audio out jack or Bluetooth able to work independent of the TV speakers (or optical out, for that matter, which is typically how a soundbar or sound system is connected). Check your TV manual or call the manufacturer for the information.

Both of my headphones are only playing on one side any clues as to why?

Is there a balance setting? Maybe that's the issue, or the audio jack plugging into the TV?

It might be the cable or the aux port (either on the tv side or the dock side). If the cable isn't contacting properly with the pins inside, it won't transmit both/stereo sound

I read that you are not able to replace the batteries in these. I was all in until I learned this. Can any owners out the confirm this?

I closely inspected mine and it appears to be a correct statement; I did not see any user serviceable parts, including batteries in the headphones.

@@AskDaveTaylor Thanks, Dave! Too bad! I have Sennheiser RS-120s I want to replace, but I've been able to replace batteries in those twice over about 10 years. I don't think I would buy if I can't replace batteries. I'm close to pulling the trigger on a pair of Sennheiser RS-175s (but I can't make myself fork over the money). Take care!

I would reach out to Avantree customer service to see if they have an upgrade path for those batteries and/or a modest fee for replacement. Good luck, and ya can't really ever go wrong with Sennheiser in my experience.

The (discontinued) Sennheiser HDR140 is an excellent upgrade to the 120 and uses the same 2.4G signal; in fact the bases while not identical, are interchangeable. The 140 has larger "over the ear" cups and better sound than the 120. While the 140 is not audiophile, it's decent enough for music. But IMO these are one the best engineered products I've ever used. I got 12 years out of the original batteries! Shared a house with someone - we each had our own pair with separate bases, yet they never walked over each other. You could walk right up to the other base and your set would stay synched to it's base in the other room far away. But if you want to hop over to the new base, just hit the re-synch button on the phones you're there. Brilliant! I also own two pairs of the $300+ HDR 195 (deluxe version of the 175) and all I can say is decent audiophile sound, but very finicky and terrible, terrible range. Plus my microwave causes them to drop out! Hope this helps!

@@AskDaveTaylor Yeah I've watched many headphones reviewed and I never once expected them to awkwardly bring the headphones up to the camera. You can't know the quality of the sound for sure unless it's on your head in real life. Not sure what Domi is going on about lol.
