He sees a group of people living in harmony and in absolute freedom. Then he sees the earth kingdom. Filled with crime, authority, chaos etc. Obviously he comes to the conclusion the earth kingdom messed up. He believes that if there was no government, the earth nation could be free and peaceful like the air nation. If we take it from only one place, it becomes rigid and stale. Understanding other elements and the other nations will help you to become whole._ If you think about it, the entire philosophy of Zaheer is only based on the thoughts of Guru Laghima, totally contradicting Iroh. He even gets to misunderstand him. Guru Laghima had anarchist thoughts, but the Air Nomads did not have a government like the other nations, so his way of thinking would apply only to them. Also, he was a pacifist, I don't think he was looking for a way to impart his philosophy by force.

Zaheer took philosophy from air nomads who are supposed to be detached from the world, and applied it to the world. It was not going to work. He's not a political scientist, and the air nomads were not political scientists. He completely missed the point of governments - in its simplest form, governments are basically people recognizing that they live in a society in which their actions have consequences on themselves and each other and would likely benefit from setting certain limits and agreements. The method/institution they use to set such limits and agreements is basically a government. Even an "anarchist" community will settle on some basic rules, and in essence the entire community is the government - they govern themselves, as informal as it will be. He also doesn't recognize how decision-making bodies become increasingly important in a society that becomes increasingly more complex. People do not have the time to study and make informed decisions about every single aspect of a modern society, and this problem becomes worse as the society progresses, with everything becoming heavily specialized. You need to delegate decision-making powers to those whose jobs will be to specialize in certain issues and be sufficiently informed so that they can (probably) make the right decisions. For example, let's say Republic City were to begin using Spirit Vines as a power source, like Varrick originally intended. They city needs to determine the required research, labor, materials, disruption to the community/businesses during the transition, potential environmental impact, among other things. The city then needs to decide how much of its resources it should divert to this project based on its potential benefits and the current economic situation. It needs to set up a timeline of how the project will proceed, starting from continuing Varrick's research to the actual implementation and testing. Does Zaheer seriously think that the citizens of Republic City will be able to come to anything resembling an informed decision on this project if the government was taken out of the picture?

I think he misunderstands how governments are formed, or why they exist. They throughout history, are created by an elite who maintain the levers of society. Who then mold people and that society towards their own ends. That creation of power dynamic, can oy lead uneven relationships between those elites and everyone else. Meaning there is always one group of society forcing others against their will. Hence are inherently immoral. This concept is core to how anarchists of any stripe understand the governments who rule.

The idea of an Avatar going rouge... Quite scary to think about. And when you look at all the events of Harmonic Convergence and take them together, you realize something that's potentially horrifying. Korra lost Rava in the battle with Vatu, making Korra the Last Avatar in that cycle. However, as Dark can't exist without Light, Korra was able to pull Rava out of Vatu during Harmonic Convergence, ensuring that the next Avatar would be the start of a new Cycle. However, Vatu wasn't simply sealed away like how Wan did. Vatu was erased just like how Rava was moments prior. Meaning, Vatu is now growing within Rava like how she was within him moments prior. And since Rava is a part of the Avatar spirit, and Vatu is within Rava, it now means that all future Avatars will have the voices of both Rava & Vatu within them. Even if Vartu's current influence is akin to a whisper compared to Rava's Loud & clear message, it stands to reason that the influence will balance over time. Both within the Avatar. The next Avatar cycle will be impacted by Darkness in addition to Light. *The possibility of a rouge Avatar actually seems plausible in the next cycle.* Think about that.

That is were the white lotus failed, they were the avatar's check and balance now they through that purpose out to raise the avatar higher. his whole concept is wanting a world of equally strength beings. his methods to doing such may be cruel, but would never be reached otherwise. In his perfect world, he would only want real world earth, no superpowers or anything, not even dictatorships. in an extreme it's like people saying they want pokemon to be real, we can't have that, some control the weather, or space and time separately. generations later an avatar could even go rogue, that's zaheer's biggest fear.

well, the second season was the setup for the greatest of all time. Without the events happening in season 2, season 3 would had a much different start. Altough, there's a lot, that should have been noticed during the editing of the script for season 2 and should have been rewritten

I don't agree that Zaheer wanted to return the world to a state of nature. What he meant was that unjust heirarchies go against human nature, but just dismantling them is not the end. He wants to then rebuild a just society without said unjust hierarchies, not just chaos. That's the most charitable take at least.

I'm pretty sure the avatar cant be corrupted because not any random can be born as the avatar. I'm sure the spirit choses the vessel, somehow knowing who will have a strong will and compassion, and having the spirit of light and peace inside you must shape you. plus traveling the world learning not only the bending but the cultures is what makes them more neutral and open minded. That's why when we follow the avatar stories is when they are young, when they are learning and do get fooled and manipulated.

If Zaheer had a theme song, John Lennon's "Imagine" would be the best choice. Sounds nice in theory but would only makes things worse

wErE tHeY RiGhT - NO. They had points but they took said points to extremes. Why is this a conversation that always has to be had? Yes, it’s true that some rulers shouldn’t be, but that doesn’t mean take out everyone that you see for the sole fact *you* don’t like them.

pretty sure Avatar is essentially incorruptible and can't be made into anything resembling a true Tyrant precisely because its the same soul reincarnating. Even though each incarnation is different they have the same goal and are affected by previous lives very very heavily. I believe even with broken Avatar cycles just because Korra still shared those ideals(and its still same soul) its still passing on. Zaheer had twisted, but noble cause. Utopian cause imo.

I so want a what if episode for if Zaheer succeeded in kidnapping Korra back when she was a child. The world would be so different with a avatar under the teachings of the red lotus
