This is never really explained outwardly, so just for context: The reason Kyoshi's Avatar State looks different is because she's a fully realized Avatar; they showed the previous Avatars do the same thing in Chapter 1 of Book 2 when Roku was talking to Aang in the Spirit World. That's what it looks like when the Avatar has full control over the Avatar State; instead of their eyes (and tattoos if they're an Air Nomad) glowing the whole time they're in the Avatar State, it's just a quick flash, and they still hold all the combined power and knowledge of all the past Avatars.

The glowing eyes was her accessing the Avatar State. Avatar Roku told us in the first episode this season what the glow was. Aang hasn’t mastered the other 3 elements nor The Avatar state and that’s why he’s unaware of what The Avatar does when he’s out of that state.

About the question regarding Avatars just showing up by themself This is complete theory, not confirmed not denied, but I think its because of special occasions. When Roku first appeared it was during the Winter Solstice, and now on Avatar Kyoshi Day she appears as well, with the help of a couple relics. I guess certain days and times are when the Spirit World and the Real word draw closer for past Avatars, allowing them to manifest on Aang.

It shows us how different the Avatars can be. Aang would never have let him fall seeing how he turned back for Zuko. Kyoshi most likely confessed because she probs had intentions of killing him eventually because of how tyrannical he was and she wasn't gonna let him control her people. She said "I killed Chin the Conqueror" way too casually as if she killed before so it was nothing.

She did struggle to control earthbending but at least she could actually bend it. Other avatars couldn't even bend an element, for Aang it was earthbending and for Korra it was air.

I've been waiting for you guys to get to this episode. It shows us how different Avatars handle situations differently. And that they could be an anti-hero if they wanted to. Knowing Aang, he would have tried to somehow make everyone happy with his final decision and would never let someone die! As we see he turned back for Zuko even though he captured him in the North Pole. The Monks taught Aang that all life is important which is why they don't eat meat. Typical Airbending principles is to defend and evade. He will protect his loved ones and his enemies not just because he's the Avatar but because it's in his nature. Avatar Roku seems similar to Aang in some aspect but he's not hesitant to drive fear into someone as a warning rather than killing them, judging by the episode in the temple where he allowed it to burn down with lava but did not intentionally kill anyone by letting everyone escape, and when he demanded that Jhong Jhong teach Aang firebending because that's his duty. "You WILL teach the Avatar firebending". I bet that was scary. Avatar Kyoshi seems nonchalant and isn't hesitant to kill just to let everyone else have peace. The fact that she confessed to killing Chin the conqueror says a lot. Yes, he fell to his death but, she didn't even try to help him so she basically let him die. Maybe she saw him as a problem later down in the future because of his quest for expansion in the Earth Kingdom. So even if he didn't fall to his doom when she separated her land from the mainland seems to me she would have killed him eventually to save the nation and her people from his reign. Which makes me wonder how she was grown. I bet she was picked on a lot for having such huge feet and a tall height.

@@AkinReacts Thank you! If you're really curious about Kyoshi's life which isn't really touched on in the animated series there are two canon novels written about her life so far. Book 1, The Rise of Kyoshi and Book 2, The Shadow of Kyoshi. I heard they're really good. Another reference is made to her in a game that was on Nickelodeon but I'll share a KZbin link for you to watch it after your reaction to season 2 finale because it takes place between the end of season 2 to around the time season 3 will start. The game is considered a lost episode and is semi canon since it was found in the bonus section of the official DVD disc of book 2 earth that was released.

You know Uncle is trying so hard to get to Zuko but he knows there’s nothing he can do at this point, Zuko has to go off on his own. @@AkinReacts No, Zuko is pretty much lost right now. He's in enemy territory after losing everything, even a false hope that he can go home and be respected, get his honor back. He thought he'd been in exile for two and a half years on that ship - but that was with a Fire Nation crew, wearing his normal clothes and armor, eating regularly the food he was used to, knowing that he could at least stop by the Fire Nation colonies for supplies. Now he's wearing the wrong color clothes, no topknot, no ship, no crew, hiding as a fugitive in enemy territory. This kid is not having a good time, and Uncle is trying but can't get through to him.

I'm putting my full reply below a see more line just because it contains books information: In the books It's discussed that while she's incredibly powerful with large earthbending movements, she's almost incapable of performing small, precise feats of earthbending. She's actually really ashamed of it since it's her natural element and she struggles so much. Once she picks up the fans she notices that they help direct her bending energy to be able to handle those smaller, precise strikes. I'm sure they do help with her airbending as well, but not originally as she hadn't even started learning airbending yet.

Makes sense how it would since airbenders are spiritual which is why almost all monks are airbenders so the minute she lost her ways she lost her spiritual connection that links with her bending similarly to another element.

I dunno if you know this already or not, but there are two books about Kyoshi and they are totally awesome, i'm sure you'd enjoy reading them after you finish the show. Also, the official audiobook version narrated by Nancy Wu is really good as well, if you'd prefer that to reading, she narrates with such a wide range of tones and emotion that you can tell each character apart from her voice alone, it's really insane how she pulls that off, even the males sound convincing.

I think aang manifesting his past lives in that manner isn’t a trick he can pull out all the time. Being close to kyoshi’s island and wearing her stuff probably helped. The time he did it with Roku was entirely different since it was on the solstice and they was in his temple.

Just FYI Kyoshi was one of the strongest natural bender ever its why she needed fans to aid bending, they gave her fine and precision bending. She also was one the longest lived avatars as well, her avatarship was mostly hit first ask latter type she was a scraper and a brawler. And personally I think it was really cool that she was Bi 🏳️‍🌈 in the book with her firebending girl friend. Great review guy jokes dem was wicked 🤣 👍🏾💯

I'm not hating on this episode but this episode is also kinda filler, I mean sure it gives us a little bit of a back story on kyoshi but other than that this episode doesn't really contribute to the main plot of the story.

The only thing that it contributes besides showing us more of kyoshi is show us why zuko and iroh split up. Which plays well with the episode zoku alone which is arguably considered filler as well, what keeps it from being completely filler are the flash backs of zoku's childhood.
