Zuko really did need to see how much hatred is out there for the Fire Nation. Even despite doing a lot of good this episode its still not enough to erase the pain that his nation has inflicted on others. One of the reason why this is one of my favorite episodes.

Even though the Fire Nation is objectively in the wrong in this war, this episode does a great job at showing that not everyone in the Earth Kingdom is a good person. And it shows that despite being raised by his warmongering father, that Zuko is not, by no means, a bad person

@Highway Unicorn If we believe Azula, anyway. We only have her word that's what actually happened, and she constantly lies and manipulates people. She's not exactly a reliable narrator. I totally believe that Azulon would order Ozai to kill Zuko - Ozai had to learn to be an asshole from somewhere, and it's not a stretch to imagine that his upbringing was profoundly abusive - but it's possible that it never happened, and his punishment was actually going to be something else, but that Ozai bumped into Azula eavesdropping and then got an idea to turn his fortunes around...
@Phyrior3 жыл бұрын
@@Talisguy Frankly, I think it would have made more sense (at least from a logic standpoint, not that logic really applies with Ozai's side of the family) for Azulon to have demanded Ozai surrender custody of Zuko to Iroh, thus satisfying both parts of the 'petition'. Iroh was without heir, so he is ineligible. 'You dare say this after he lost his son?! Then your claim to Zuko is forfeit!'

One of the things this episode highlights is Zuko's innate goodness. Just little subtle things here and there. Like not stealing food from that couple once he realizes the woman is pregnant, prioritizing food for the ostrich horse over a meal for himself, not selling out the kids even after the Earth Kingdom soldiers confront him/steal his feed. Working for his next meal (when he easily probably could have stolen it if he really wanted). You get the idea. Although Zukos done messed up things like stealing this episode shows that he does have good moral instincts that would lead him to the path of good if he tried. "I've always had to struggle and fight and that's made me strong. It's made me who I am." - Quote from the end of Book 1 but applies to Zuko's journey in general.

This episode is so good all the way through 💯 I love how the writers draw some parallels between Lee and Zuko in this episode: - Lee’s older brother is fighting in the war, Zuko’s older cousin fought in the war - Lee’s brother gets captured most likely to die in the war, Zuko’s cousin died in the war - Lee mentions “you’d like my brother Sen Su, he used to show me this kind of stuff” after Zuko teaches Lee about broad swords implying Sen Su was a mentor/role model to Lee before going to war, as well as Lu Ten may have been something like that to Zuko before passing I love how you guys noticed that Zuko wouldn’t take Lee’s family’s “charity” food, that he’d rather earn it through some sort of hard work. We see now that Zuko will only take something if he has to work for it, even if that means stealing, it’s still him working hard to get what he wants/needs. He went from at the beginning of this season saying stuff like “I wasn’t meant to be a fugitive” and “we’re royalty these people should be giving us what we want”, to now him being alone and not acting like a “spoiled” prince. We hate it because Zuko goes through and has been through A LOT, but we also love to see it 🥲😭

one of my favorite episodes I think you slipped on a tiny part of Zukos Mom. His mom vanished on the same night as Firelord Azulon died and even said "goodbye" to Zuko in a upset way (Zuko was still half asleep and didnt realy realise what was going on). And this happened, after she found out Azulon wanted to kill Zuko as punishment on Ozai (because Azula mocked Zuko with it). Now make up your mind of it :D Another funny thing of the scene of Azula mocking Zuko with Ozai killing him. She is pure evil and manupilating, even as child as you could see. But instead of letting Zuko die, she told him and said "you could go to an earthkingdom family". Even the evil Azula didnt realy want her brother to be killed and told him, so he could escape eventually But like always, great reaction. I like how you discuss certain topics, figuring out some stuff by your own, getting up some theories and asking the important questions all along. Gosh i hope there would be more atla per week xD

Azula got all the attention from their father because of her bending so she learned from him and strove to get his affection as a result. She had cutthroat instincts to begin with, he encouraged that and essentially taught her that being powerful is all she could do for him or anyone to love her. Zuko got all the attention from their mother because he was shunned by his father do to his lack lustre bending and lack of strategic skills, he learned from her and strived to impress her more than his dad as a result. He was torn between being aggressive and kind when he was young as we can see he inherited some of his fathers temper and difficulty with empathy. Him getting attention and validation from his mother and later his uncle helped make him more empathetic and prevent him from turning his anger on others. This is a classic abusive family dynamic. A child works to get love from the parent who provides attention the easiest to them, thus making them behave more like that parent/ that parents idea of good.

you guys watched the show by now, so i think I can say this, if yall see it anyway. its confirmed by the canon comics that came after the show that in order to spare zuko's life, his mom made an untraceable poison and gave it to ozai to use it on his father, azulon, the fire lord at that time. the deal was ozai would get the throne (instead of iroh) and zuko would be spared. but ozai told her to leave because that poison couldve been used against him when he took the throne. and the reason why he treats zuko badly is because the mom was taken from her home village and her original true love and forced to marry ozai. she kept speaking with him behind ozai's back after their marriage. she knew that ozai was intercepting her letters so she'd lie in them saying ozai wasn't the father of zuko which ticked ozai off because he knew for a fact it was a lie. the mom said she did so cuz she knew the letters were being intercepted and she wanted to make ozai feel pain for being a terrible person. so ozai basically said bet, you wanna lie and say zuko isn't my son? then i'll treat him like he ain't my son. and yeah. in the comics, its explained what happened to the mom btw, and yes, she's still alive.

To analyse key words and pick up the puzzles: Ozai: "With Lu Ten gone, Iroh's bloodline has ended. But I am here father and my children are alive. Revoke Iroh's birthright. I am your loyal son." Azulon: "You dare suggest I betray Iroh, my firstborn? Directly after the demise of his only son? I think Iroh has suffered enough. Your punishment has scarcely begun!" ● Analyse: 1) Grandfather may had loved his firstborn Iroh more than Ozai. Ozai may feel disdained toward this thus reflected it in his own children by hating his firstborn even more and loving the second child Azula. Making it worst is that Zuko the heir is not the ideal son Ozai thought unlike Azula. #ParentalFavourites 2) Not just speaking out, Ozai's words suggest high treason against the throne (Wanting to remove Iroh's birthright at first opportunity). Of course Grandfather Azulon is furious and Fire Nation is famous for their punishments especially royal family. 3) Ozai mentioned he is Azulon's loyal son. Ozai don't make me barf all over you. #YeahRight ------------------------ Azula: "Dad's going to kill you. Really he is." Zuko: "Haha Azula, not funny." Azula: "Grandfather said Dad's punishment should fit his crime. You must know the pain in losing your firstborn son by sacrificing your own." Zuko: "Liar!" Azula: "I'm only telling you for your own good." ● Analyse: 1) Remembering Grandfather Azulon's punishment to Ozai, I wouldn't be surprised if Azulon actually said that. #FireNationHarshPunishments 2) Knowing Ozai's favourite is Azula and not Zuko...even immesely disliked Zuko, somehow I could actually picture Ozai doing it aka sacrifcing Zuko. Difference is he may share no remorse abt the loss unlike Iroh towards his son Lu Ten becayse Iroh loved his son...Ozai highly questionable. So it may not have been a problem or 'punishment' in Ozai's eyes. 3) Here we see it again. In terms of what any kind of speaking out to your elders can do to you especially when it's not your place to do so. Zuko did that, got burned literally and then banished by his Father. Ozai did that to his father and was tasked with a punishment of killing his own son. 4) Azula lies so much it's hard to tell if she's actually telling the truth for once. Even if this was the truth, she says it in a sick and twisted tone that even I cannot tell if this was her way of protecting genuine concern for Zuko or another mind game. Best part is that what she says is logical based on my earlier argument plus children also tend to pick up what their elders say. --------------------------- Zuko: "Dad would never do that to me." Ursa: "Your father would never do what to you?" Azula: "I don't know." Ursa: "It's time for a talk." *grabs Azula and pulls her away

did you really expect them to accept zuko after he was fire bending and once he said he was the prince... remember their brother died in the war because of the fire nation and zuko is the prince of the enemy. The sad part is the bald topknot look was probably not by choice on Zuko's part... He certainly didn't wear it that way before he was banished, he is probably just now able to grow that part of his hair back.

Important lines my dudes. The responses of characters and their reactions....the dialogue here is what defines them...whether it reaffirms personalities you already know, or indicates dynamics that used to be...in the flashbacks of the past. Please....don't get too caught up in your own banter to miss it. You can see how Ozai reinforces Azula's behavior...while Zuko's more human nature...like his reaction to his cousin dying...or Uncle Iroh giving up....or his concern for Mai getting burned.....ALL get ridiculed and shunned by his family.....except.....for his mother. Don't dismiss the dialogue and script for background noise. It's time to tune in.

Actually if you think about the inscription "Made in Earth Kingdom", it's probably not the same thing as today on every product. In this show's setting with medievalish level of development and no globalization, most goods probably did not have any stamps at all because they were all sold locally, and only the really fine ones from established guilds or masters would have official stamps on them as proof of quality, which would make their value unquestioned in any remote part of the world they would end up even to people who had no understanding what quality is for a given type of product.

Initially I found discomfort in this episode when I watched it dyrung my younger days because I thought those villagers were ungrateful people. Only after watching other reactors, yours and presumebly maturing abit more, I realised it was the scars of war. They are depicting how it would be like in reality. Normally, when watching shows, most of our minds are turned off because we are jyst enjoying it as it is which is fine but ATLA always gives that something extra for us to enjoy and reflect. It's amazing!

Azula is a very interesting character, I don't want to spoil anything but, I'll just describe her as I can It's not exactly her fault, her dad raised her to be the 'perfect' warrior, training her day and night 24/7 as a little girl and she wasn't really her mother's 'favorite' either, she didn't even say goodbye to her, always left with her father only, she never really learnt compassion from her so all she knows is to be absolutely perfect for her father to get love and praise
@kpuda77223 жыл бұрын
Her mother did care for Azula and treated her with love though of course she was disturbed by her behavior. She even visited her room before she left if you rewatch the episode (it's a smaller detail since Zuko woke up and had a whole conversation with Ursa, probably because he was disturbed by that night's events, while Azula just smiled in her sleep and barely even noticed when her mom stopped down to kiss her). I think that Azula, having the ignorance and immaturity of childhood and knowing that her father approved and encouraged her behavior, read her mother's disapproval as favoritism. She didn't realize that the only reason why Ursa scolded her brother less was because he was more receptive since he had nowhere else to turn to, while she scoffed at her mother's direction. Since the one who was encouraging her bad behavior was the one with the most power, authority, and success in life ("might makes right") while Ursa was just a peasant who married into royalty, she ignorantly chose to emulate her father's view on life and disregarded her mother. That's not to say it's entirely Azula's fault, but I don't think Ursa's negligence was the problem. People just underestimate the influence of Ozai and Azulon as the members of the family with the most power and don't take into account how their own minds worked when they were kids and what could have happened if their parents weren't mostly aligned in morals.
@PleasantlyEmpathic99243 жыл бұрын
@@kpuda7722 I completely understand that, I'm not saying Ursa was the whole problem, I'm just saying it didn't exactly help, she could have been a little more influential to her, remember she was young a still impressionable even with Ozai there, she had time away from training, away from Ozai and she still made bad decisions. I feel like Ursa was alittle too afraid of what her husband's teachings were doing to her that she didn't think she could do much of anything, on Azula's time off, Ursa could have kept an eye on her, teach her from right and wrong BEFORE Ozai got in her head, she only knew war, practice and fighting. She was a princess but didn't know how to act like one, only an intimidating force that kept threats when she didn't get what she wanted, Ursa could have looked over that but she gave little effort into it compared to Zuko because he was easy. Basically Ursa really could have gave Azula discipline in the right way if she tried, it's not like she completely disrespected her mother at first, she just didn't understand her point of view and it only got worse over time.

@@PleasantlyEmpathic9924 Spoilers for comics: Ursa actually did kiss Azula goodbye while she was asleep. And she did try to help Azula. Ozai would immediately go behind her and reinforce her bad behavior. It was useless.
