In regards to the 'mystic natives' angle, something to consider is that Eywa is a character active in the story as well. There's a difference between the native deity being a bit of world-building and them literally, tangibly existing in the setting in a way that can be scientifically proven. Eywa can act and make choices, so when they see the sacred seeds floating around, Ewya is telling them to move there to send messages to the natives.

I would even say it goes further than that and acknowledges a universal need for spiritual reconciliation and ancient wisdom. The real difference between the humans and the na'vi, in my opinion, is that whether us humans no longer see the need for spirituality and the religious experience in our path to godhood (even though we psychologically need that very thing), the na'vi haven't yet "killed" their god and still have a clear distinction between the sacred and the profane. The haters keep talking about Deus-Ex Machinas and coincidences in the first movie without remembering even for a moment that a supposed goddess LITERALLY exists here. She can LITERALLY influence the world and make things happen according to her wisdom. This fact going completely over people's head goes to show that a bias against anything religious is truly at the core of many of the haters arguments. As if humans have never been religious themselves... It is so dumb.

The white savior argument really falls apart when you actually watch the battle. Despite Jakes efforts, the humans were going to WIN. The Na’vi were LOSING. It wasn’t until Ewya sent in reinforcements that the Na’vi stood any real chance. Even in the final face off, Quaritch was going to kill Jake, until Neytiri saved him. Even before the battle, we see time and time again Jake needing rescuing. Thanator inadvertently saving him from the hammerheads, Neytiri with the viper wolves, Neytiri with Tsu’tey. A major point is that Jake WASNT some white savior, Pandora saved HIM.
@ThreadBareHope12346 ай бұрын
Perfect point. Another point people say to prove he is a white savior is that he "can native better than the natives" when he absolutely doesn't. I get so mad when people say something has a White Savior narrative just because a white guy - or former white human here - learns the truth and helps the natives. Plus, the dictionary definition of White Savior includes that they are doing it for praise, and Jake did not want to be worshiped or anticipate that he would be a candidate for Chief.

Right. Pay attention and it's easy to see that Jake is a bumbling idiot from beginning to end. Neyiri saves his life, what, 4 times? 5 times? And she gets to kill the badguy right as he was about to slit Jake's throat. Dude goes from one failure to the next and can't get out of his own way, but he has divine help (and thematically this is represented by Neytiri as an archetype, too, not only Eywa) that he doesn't really "deserve" (but he kind of does just by way of being empty-headed) yet has stumbled into. It is a deeply spiritual film in that way.
@marshallscotАй бұрын
Also, worth pointing out that Jake is not "white" in the allegorical sense. His Avatar body is half human/half Na'Vi. In American history, there are many examples of mixed race Indian/Anglos who side with their native half and fight against European settlers. This is what Jake represents.

People need to remember that the acting can be seen on the faces of the Navi. Theres depth there. But its under some amazing CGI makeup. I love how excited Jake Sully looks and feels when he gets his Avatar body, when he gets his new legs. Excellent video , thank you so much for taking the time to create this. I am so baffled as to how this movie went over so many heads . But you broke it down precisely , revealing the deeper layers of the movie. Back when AVATAR was released, there were news articles depicting a large number of people feeling depression and suicidal after watching the movie. As someone who felt this depression after seeing the movie for the first time in cinemas, I can tell you that the depression does not stem from the want to be on Pandora, the depression stems from the fact that this Earth IS Pandora. The depression settles in as more realizations begin to occur. Humanity is allowing itself to become a disease to the planet, all for the sake of material gain. In any movie review of James Cameron’s AVATAR, we are mostly told it is praised for it’s CGI and not for it’s story. Which for the most part, lacked originality. Comparisons are made to previous stories. Stories such as Ferngully, Pocahontas, and Dances with Wolves. Yet, what astounds me is that while people compare AVATAR to these films, they do not compare it to the events and situations that these films are focused on. Events and situations that are still ongoing to this day. AVATAR uses symbolism and imagery to portray the atrocities committed by the Corporatocracy. And, how our ignorance not only allows these atrocities to occur - but, also has halted our evolution. AVATAR is not only a social commentary on the Extortion of Natural Resources, Exploitation of Indigenous Peoples, or Aboriginal Genocide. It is a simulation of what life can be.. The film not only shows that the planet we are from is the mother of all life, it shows an alternative form of humanity. The Na'Vi are representative of Neohumanism*, the next stage in our evolutionary path. The humans depicted in the film are clearly shown to be from the Western world. Working for Corporations that seek to maximize profits regardless of social or environmental loss. So, what we have here is a film depicting two possible forms of humanity, the old paradigm vs the new paradigm.

On the bit of "mystic native trope" - I have to disagree to some extent. While the trope is there, like other themes in the movie it's not quite the same. Avatar makes it explicit in multiple scenes that there is a biological basis for their deity Eywa. The 'sign' Neytiri sees as a seed from a sacred tree. It is shown many times that this tree and trees like it are the major points of connection (on land) to the planet sized "neural network" they can access. The idea being that the world itself is alive, and the emphasis seems to be that this is at least in part Eywa. Near the end of the movie when the Omaticaya try to transfer Graces consciousness permanently to her avatar body, Mo'at tells Jake "She must pass through the eye of Eywa, and return." Later as she is dying, Grace tells Jake "I'm with her Jake... * she's real *." It's a very in-your-face version of themes we see (most familiar to me, Native American cultures). "MOTHER Earth", the mother who provides for us all that we need, a world that we must be stewards of. But instead of 'shaking the stick' at it so to speak, it founds it in reality. It makes it clear that you cannot access this - you cannot fully understand it - you have no real proof of what they are saying - yet it is real to them. When Jake is learning from Neytiri through the eyes of an avatar, the moment he first connects to a sacred tree - the Tree of Voices - and hears the memories of ancestors of the Omaticaya, it is framed as a major turning point in his realization. The next scene, he immediately confronts the destruction his people have instigated.
@nope56572 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The film makes it explicitly clear the "religion" of the Na'vi is TRUE. Not true on some woowoo spiritual "this is the way" level. But BIOLOGICALLLY, ECOLOGICALLY real. Eywa is a REAL intelligence, even a character if you will with her own agency. And this another knock AGAINST the white savior accusations. Not even Jake's military planning and knowledge gets the job done. It's the planet itself that saves the day.

It is so awesome to see the themes and motivations of characters you describe and Cameron has shown in this movie be continued in the next, or how change has occurred. On a separate note of the first movie: one of my favorite details was the mention of Quaritch and Jake’s background. Quaritch mentions his deployment in Nigeria, which can be inferred that it was the last worker revolution that had chance to take root in the third world, with west Africa and the continent carrying the largest deposit of resources in the world. Humanities last hope through pan Africanism and a transition to a more egalitarian needs based society snuffed out. And Venezuela, with it being in the decades of 2100s, carrying one of the largest oil reserves (however, incredibly difficult and expensive to process due to its low quality), that invasion has occurred because of likely depletion of oil based fossil fuels. It truly is a tragedy: that you can sit, with confidence that humanity in this scenario will and must die because they could not transition into a post capitalist society. Stuck reaping the over production and consequences of ever increasing unnecessary consumption of resources. Illustrated perfectly when Jake describes how humans on earth “killed their mother.” Humanity’s downfall because of this does not justify colonization (or colonizing in general of another community) in addition to the systemic issues that have never been resolved. And on a side note, it makes it so incredible, the “I see you” comes from the raw interconnectedness with wild life and Pandora because of a neural extension that lets them interact and truly see what cannot be described. James Cameron did an amazing job at making you care about the consequences of losing such a world, to feel that it must be preserved.

THANK YOU Did James Cameron play it safe? Undeniably, sure, the envelope could have been pushed far more in regards to the alien designs and the Na'vi and especially the soundtrack, but it's still impressive as it is. Another issue is this idea that White people *cannot* be taught differently, that by participating in any of these cultures they are inherently going to take from it for their own financial gains is another reason why I detest media spaces nowadays. There have been white people who have been oppressed by other white people. Spain is one such region, Poland another, so much of eastern euprope feels the same fear of losing everything to a bigger, stronger white man. We can sympathize, empathize with indigenous people and still Identify that bc we look white, we gat a pass in day to day society, but that fear is never lost. It's taught and carried from our grandparents hiding and stealing free food from restaurants to take home and never wasting leftovers when we have them. In entire wardrobes of hand-me-downs and fixed and patched clothing from when your parents were teenagers. We see them. Sometimes it feels like the west is the only one who wont.

Calm down social justice warrior. Commies do colonialism too. They are also ultra nationalistic and they love capitalism also. Come on, they loved selling all those democratic socialist European leaders Petro. Those socialist European leaders who screamed about global warming and saving the earth are desperately digging up coal now cause they don't want to freeze to death. Lol. The funny part is most people angry at capitalism here in u.s love big designer wear clothing brands, they love big Hollywood personalities who wear the designer wear, and they all love the commie child laborers who make their clothing and brands. And the Big commie company owners love their child laborers and love western sjws who pretend to hate capitalism. Lol.

Jake didn't just take a wild gamble that "fortunately paid off" when he attempted to bond with the red dragon. He took a wild gamble, but he was in some way fated to do it *and* succeed. He is literally chosen by Eywa, the global supercomputing neural network that the Na'vi worship as a god. If not for that, he would have been killed by Neytiri the first time they meet

But for instance, Top Gun Maverick is universally loved and I’d argue that’s a pretty patriotic film. It just depends on craft, story, acting, emotions.

I watched Avatar in the cinema back in the day and I never had the desire to watch it again. Which is a first for me when it comes to James Cameron. One thing that has stood out to me personally is that the "mystical native" trope is touched on, but I think it was done very deliberately. The na'vi are a caricature for indigenous issues. People try to delegitimize the "sacred fern, for christ's sake" that it's absurd they believe the trees are actually an advanced biological species of life that allows them to upload and download data and memories even from people who have long since passed away and how dare they defend their land from the people who want the stuff in the ground underneath where they have lived for countless centuries. Notice how in A2 kiri didn't respond to human medicine but when the tsahìk stepped in that was when she woke up. I think that was just as deliberate as their connection to eywa. I enjoy that it legitimizes the "mystical" aspects because a human might see is as "pagan voodoo" but to them it is something real. More real than an alien (humans) could comprehend.

Your white saviour counter argument is definitely interesting I can’t say I fully am on bored right now, as I don’t hate Jake in his role but I can’t say I have ever been a fan either, more just something I can overlook. The fact he almost caught up to the native people in 3 months and still tames the big bird that only 5 people have EVER done was a bit silly to me as once again this was done in 3 months. I do believe that he really was open and wanting to learn the culture and I thought that was super cool and inspiring but you can’t deny if he wasn’t the best he was close to it and doing all that in such a short time can’t be overlooked. Like I said I’m on the fence overall.

I'm not sure how I feel about Avatar 1, I don't hate it, but I don't love it either, there are elements that I like in the film and things that I don't. I recently watched it again after many years and it surprisingly does hold up at times, some parts don't but you have ro expect that from a film that came out in 2009 and the current year is 2022. I have to say that, I know you've explained the story in a pretty interesting way, but I still feel it's pretty..... meh, I've been watching some of the deleted scenes, and I honestly think if a lot of these weren't cut, I'd have enjoyed the story a lot more, for example, Norm and Trudy having a relationship, this would have ment so much more when Trudy dies and more meaning when Norm cluches his heart when he climbs out of the pod thing (I can't remember what they're called), I also liked how Selfridge does actually go against Quaritch, to no avial of course but still shows he does still have some integrity, even if its not much. But I do respect the film as a whole because we do owe a lot to it in terms of its technology, I mean, without it, we wouldn't have got the behemoth that Marvel has become, who seem to be lacking in the years after Endgame (where the MCU peaked in my opinion). I will say that the action of this film was done beautifully. Nothing looked janky, no weird physics. Like I said, the CG might not have held up at times, but that just in terms of the visual, the animations do still hold up. I will say that I totally agree with you on Quaritch, Stephen Lang plays him so well, especially since this was the first time I had actually seen the actor before, left a lasting impression on me and despite me not really being exited for the sequel, I am curious about his return since he was still a tough enemy to go up against even as a human, so what will he be like now as an Avatar. I'd also like to point out that another reason as to why he may hate the Na'vi and Pandora as a whole is because of that scar, he says to Jake that on Earth he'd never been wounded or grazed, he remained unscathed, but day 1 on Pandora and he almost gets his head ripped off, honestly, if I was him, I'd feel a little resentful towards Pandora. I also agree that I don't think he's in it for the money like the others, at least not at the time we meet him, when he first signed up, maybe but after that scar? No, I think it's more of a vendetta. The pay is just a bonus. As a final note, like I said, I neither hate nor love the film, but I still respect it for what it did for cinema and film technology. Did it deserve a sequel? I'm not sure, I'll have to watch Way of the Water, but I'm in no rush to see it. But I will say that I hope people who loved the first one loved the sequel and the sequels to come, it would be a waste for so many people to put so much work into a film only for it to fail.

I think one thing many people are not aware of is the fact that we have historical examples of conquistadors who abandoned the conquest altogether & fought with the Natives instead. During the Spanish conquest there were men who fully integrated themselves with native societies, they came to be accepted & well-respected by their new indigenous tribe. They completely departed from their old identities, were given indigenous names, settled down & started a family. They became new people because they in some way they had connected with & genuinely appreciated the ways of indigenous people. In that sense, the story of Jake Sully does mirror history. The main difference between reality & the movie is that they were never the new tribe leaders, more often than not they didn’t survive. They posed such a threat to the conquest that they were primary targets & inevitably killed. I would actually love to see some of our real stories regarding the conquest depicted in a movie. There’s a lot that most don’t ever get the chance to learn.
