I love how the Kyoshi Warriors episode handles sexism for a kids' show: Sokka's ignorance make sense, because he comes from a remote island where all the men went off to war, and he was left in charge of protecting everyone. But when he's confronted with a situation that disproves his narrow experience, he takes a day to realize he was wrong, apologizes, and grows as a result.

@@zippomageWhat would be the point of taking away a learning experience for 1. A character and 2. Kids? Not all kids grow up with open minded families. There are likely kids out there who saw this and were able to learn similar lessons. And it provides good, and fast character growth for Sokka. What would be the point if everyone went into the show perfect? Sexism is very very common.. Thus it should be a theme in the show that’s tackled. Nothing will change if its never talked about. And they chose to talk about it.

What helps is that the Kiyoshi warriors never brag or are arrogant about their positions as warriors. Along with bravery and honor, they also champion humility, being willing to help the community whenever they can. You’d never catch a Kiyoshi warrior being petty or hypocritical. A lot of people who write girl power stories make the mistake of thinking they should be promoting superiority and a disregard for others instead of fairness. Thankfully, the writers of Avatar were smart enough to avoid the pitfalls so many other shows and movies fall into (see any Hollywood movie from the past decade).

And _this_ is why Sokka is a big fan favourit. He can be cocky and judgemental, but his heart is in the right place and most importantly _he is able to learn._ How many men, or just people in general would have walked away from this humiliation and just stewed in their own resentment, just build up an anger? Sokka was able to see through his shame and realize that if he wanted to grow as a person and a warrior, he _had_ to eat some humble pie. Plus, i think he very much knows that he was a jerk and I do not think he likes himself when he is being a jerk. Also love Suki as a Badass _WOman_ Warrior. Modern portrail sometimes seems to have the problem that if a woman is Badass, she can't be feminine. But Suki clearly shows, you can very much be both. She kicks ass and takes names and would still love a romantic candlelight dinner.

If you look closely, you'll see monk Gyatso'd body is the only left in the room that wasn't destroyed when Aang went Avatar state. Also, yeah, they do great character work with all the main characters, and there's still a few to come. Zuko actually had his own writing team to flesh out that he has a proper consistent story throughout the whole thing, rather than just being an intermittently recurring character. Also also, Unagi is a generic term for sea serpent. Can refer to anything from an eel dish to a water dragon.

Gyatso was a menace. The only real explanation as to how he can be dead there surrounded by dead firebenders is that he just removed the air from the entire room and killed them all through asphyxiation. Either he held it up to the last second, or he was already dying of a wound and didn't asphyxiate himself. Also Aang tatoo's mean he's an airbending master so there's not much more he can learn in Airbending beside how to incorporate other styles into his.

I like the Netflix casting, my biggest concern with how they look is if they do the eye colours or not. In the original show you can almost always tell where a character is from because grey eyes are air, blue eyes are water, green eyes are earth, and amber eyes are fire. It might be easy to miss since most characters are earth or fire and their eyes don’t really feel out of place, and Aang is the only airbender we see much, but water tribe characters like Katara and Sokka generally have the darkest skin but brightest eyes. I feel like that visual contrast is really neat and the most noticeable, so if they don’t have blue eyes in the Netflix show it will feel really off in my opinion. Aside from that, no one ever seems to capture how bad Zuko’s burn scar is. Cautiously optimistic nonetheless!
@nicholes6000
@nicholes6000 Жыл бұрын
It’s interesting how they use eye color to distinguish between the different cultures. It reminds me of how in real life different ethnic groups have different features which easily distinguishes them. In a cartoon it’s not so easy because they’re drawings, therefore the need for the different eye colors is compelling. In live action though, it kinda feels like it would be weird if they did stay true to the eyes in the animated show. It would look unnatural and I kinda feel like it would throw a lot of people off unnecessarily. It makes sense in animation but imagine a real person walking around with pure golden eyes or a Native American with blue eyes. While it would be a cool touch, it’s just not important to the story for their eye colors to be like that. Plus then the actors would have to wear contacts and many of them are kids. It just doesn’t seem realistic

Avatar is animated so beautifully, and the story is written and performed so well. I'm just not sure what a live action remake could possibly add, but there's a lot of risk of them taking away from something already great. I'm not that big on Disney to begin with, but Disney's live action remakes of their classic animated films have not exactly been the sort of things people will watch again decades from now, or even remember. A lot of the reason for that comes down to how animation can do things that live action simply cannot do. Animated characters can be so much more colorful, expressive, and do things with their bodies that are physically impossible in the real world. Live action also means real world lighting, instead of the creative and physically impossible things animation can do with light and shading for dramatic storytelling effect. And if everything's just going to be CGI anyway, why do live action at all?

Some people think live action just means "the show but it looks better" and don't appreciate animation as a separate medium that has its own strengths and weaknesses. The live actions that aim to remake animated series/movies and retell them often have this air of "animated show but better" and usually falls flat because it doesn't focus on replacing what's lost in animation with what's gained in live action

But then they left, and the letter they released explaining their departure, and how what Netflix wanted to create, even if it was good or not, didn't commit to portray the true spirit of Avatar basically killed my expectations. But their departure also meant great news as Konietzko and DiMartino partnered with Nickelodeon to create Avatar Studios and now new animated sequel movies and a new show set in the Avatar universe are in the way, so the Netflix show helped rekindle the fire of the franchise.

@FunnyLilGalReacts Zuko isn't just trying to prove himself to his father so he will be worthy to succeed him, his father fully banished him. He isn't allowed to step foot on Fire Nation soil until after he captures the Avatar. Now, what is REALLY important context is that if you go back to the first episode, Zuko had been given this ultimatum to find and capture the Avatar before Aang was even free from the ice. He had been missing for over a hundred years; so long that everyone had given up even trying to find him. What Zuko's father, the Firelord, ultimately did was tell his son "either do this impossible thing, or never come back." Yet, despite it being considered this impossible fool's errand, Zuko had resolved to do anything it took to complete that mission. Disgraced, cast out by his own father, he's an angry confused boy that was forced to grow up too fast, and just wants the right to return home and be accepted by more of his family than just his uncle Iroh. This is also speaks volumes about what kind of person Iroh is. He may seem like comic relief, but he's not a character to be dismissed. This is why he's my favorite :D

The arrow tattoos that Aang has are actually symbols that he has mastered airbending (he also was the youngest air bending master ever). So he doesn't really need to learn more air bending but he does need to learn the other 3 elements.

They did a better job casting for the Netflix show than the movie. It’s always hard to go from animation into a live action adaptation bc most times the movements just don’t translate. But I’m hesitant about Netflix’s live action adaptations, haven’t done well in the past. And doesn’t help that the creators of Avatar left the Netflix show due to creative differences. But I’ll go into it with a neutral mindset and see

@@dunringill1747 wait I just thought of this I think the og creators left cause Netflix wanted to make the show a little more mature than the original series so that they can draw in more adults who've never seen the original series to watch it and that's what the disagreement was tbh I'm not looking for a one to one adaptation just a really good one

I am loving re-experiencing this series through your reactions! I initially watched the series a few years ago with my ex. That relationship ended poorly and made me not want to come back to the series solo because of memories, but watching you enjoy the show is letting me relive it apart from those memories! It is a masterfully written show. The character development across the board is just phenomenal. And you want to see more fire bending… just wait.

Here's my thoughts on the live action show: I just hope it's good. Nearly every Fandom out there has been burned by a crappy live action adaptation so I just want this one to be at least decent. That being said, my stance has always been this: can the show be improved in any way by converting it to a live action setting, and furthermore, if it CAN be approved, are the potential improvements substantial enough to warrant it?
@nuclearbirds
@nuclearbirds Жыл бұрын
I feel like what could improve it more than being live action is the story being told without needing to be child-friendly enough to air on Nickelodeon. Stories about war, extinction, and authoritarian empires can’t always be as effectively expressed as they should be while also being filtered for “all audiences”. ATLA does it better than any other show to date, in my opinion; but I can only imagine how good it would get if some of the darker elements didn’t need to be approved for G/PG audiences.

The movie pretty much adapts the first season of the show. i understand it was supposed to be a trilogy, with each movie coming from roughly a season. However, it bombed (and rightly so) so the rest of the trilogy was abandoned. I'm also cautiously optimistic for the Netflix show. As always, love the reaction! I can't wait for the next one!

1. Sokka has great big brother energy with Aang. His views on gender are partially based on the traditions of the Water Tribe but also because, as we see in the first episodes, he's the only warrior left in his village after the adults went off to fight. He manages to be the "best" largely for lack of competition, but he holds himself to an impossibly high standard and feels intense shame when he falls short. 2. Now you know part of Zuko's backstory. It gets even more intense later. Key episodes to watch out for in this regard are 1-12 and 2-7.

Aang named Momo, Momo because I think right before he said Momo is the name he stole a peach from Sokka. Momo means peach. Unagi means eel. Maybe not giant eel but eel lol I checked out the stills. The only one dressed right is Aang. I mean why is Zuko in green? He’s fire nation. Or Sokka like a soldier. Also they made Zuko kinda tan. They made him dark in the movie too but he is so pale in the cartoon.

I'm excited about the live action series, just because I want more ATLA, but I'm expecting it to be not great. It's always hard to translate animation into live action, all the more so when the animation is so readily available and beloved. I feel like the live action show is unnecessary. The cartoon is a masterpiece...not perfect, there are times it definitely shows more of it's kid show vibe and some episodes lean too far into the goofy. But taken as a whole it's three seasons of an incredibly moving, beautiful story. It didn't need to be remade, it's great as is. That said I'll still give the new show a shot, it could be decent. The movie completely lost what was special about the show, but one live action failure doesn't mean all live action adaptations will be failures.

A couple of small clarifications worth making: 1. Aang is always the Avatar even when his tattoos and eyes aren't glowing, the glow only happens when the "avatar spirit" activates as Katara alludes to in this episode. You'll learn more later, so I won't say any more for now. 2. Unfortunately for Sokka, bending the elements is an innate capability that you can only learn to use if you have it from birth. Most/some people have no bending. Regarding the live action show - while I don't expect it to come even close to being as good as this show, even if it just turns out ok I'll still be happy for all involved. It's not like we'll lose access to this version. The casting looks solid, and even if the stills they released gave me a small ptsd flashback to the movie, I'm cautiously optimistic. Although the original creators of this show leaving the Netflix adaptation due to creative differences doesn't bode super well. That being said, the original creators have founded "Avatar Studios" and have a whole bunch of animated projects on the way! So we've got plenty to look forward to either way.
