What I love about Azula's cover story with the revolutionary cell at the beginning: it isn't a total lie. She has lost her mother and her brother. In the timeline of the series their mother was gone well before Ba Sing Se, but Zuko was probably banished shortly after Iroh's failed siege. Considering how they're building Azula's character in this series, it's actually kinda significant that she's drawing on her own experience, but twisting it to fit the situation. Gives me faith that the more subtle and 'realistic' approach to writing & characterization will pay off in the long term.

I thought Uncle Iroh shooting off those fire blasts and shouting "For the Fire Nation!" was a more meaningful replacement for when Uncle Iroh gets captured by the Earthbenders at the hot springs. Instead of just being lazy and oversleeping and getting caught off guard, he's actively sacrificing himself into Earth Kingdom custody for Zuko's chance to escape from the Earth Kingdom. Zhao even highlighted that they'll be in enemy territory in Omashu and won't be able to get help if any trouble occurs, so Iroh had to save them.
@eileensnow6153
@eileensnow6153 7 ай бұрын
It’s also incredibly smart to be playing off of the Earth Kingdom’s fears. Zuko and Iroh both know that these little, covert attacks aren’t coming from the Fire Nation, but the Earth Kingdom citizens don’t know that. So they are perfectly willing to believe that a random firebender would get into a kerfuffle and start throwing fire around. Terrified people aren’t going to question what he could possibly be trying to accomplish.

@cookie_of_nine

Yeah, aside from collateral damage, Jet is known for his drive to root out fire nation spies/traitors, which naturally fits in with how the Mechanist's story goes. I like a lot the top-level storytelling changes that have been made, either to incorporate what came later better, to fit in better with what else has changed (like making the fire nation more of a fearsome threat), or when they need to speed up some events that otherwise took significantly larger parts of an episode (e.g. the water bending scroll and appa's whistle). It is a sign that the writers both respect the original material, but also have the confidence to make significant changes. The original creators were on board for a while during production before leaving, so this may have been their influence at work. Hopefully that kind of creativity doesn't dissapear in the (recently announced) books 2 and 3.
@de.n30
@de.n30 7 ай бұрын
I kinda agree, it was a smart choice to mix those stories together. Is it well constructed, though? Some nonsense from the writers: - Jet trying to kill people from the Earth Kingdom? He only planned that in the animation cuz it was a fire nation village, and he sees them all as villains, not just collateral damage. Also, he needed Katara and Aang for their waterbending, and that's why he manipulates her. Here, Katara is basically useless and he does it just cuz he's a sociopath? - The whole "gonna blow up the king" makes no sense if Longshot could just... Put an arrow at the king's throat? - Azula infiltrating a low-level rebellion? Why? She's clearly well overqualified for that. - Here Zuko already seems to have his father's respect? Plus Zhao is below him in the order of things? The whole thing about Zuko is that he's a prince with zero respect and authority, Zhao, Ozai and Azula are always putting him down. -> so far Iroh is great, though!
@A_Beacon_Of_Hope
@A_Beacon_Of_Hope 7 ай бұрын
@@de.n30 You need to understand that not everything is gonna be the same, it's a live action not a copy paste. - Jet was trying to kill people who were working for the fire nation like the Mechanist etc... In this, Jet didn't really manipulate her but he thought that Katara was on his side because they both lost their parents because of the fire nation. Jet tried to kill King Bumi cuz he thought he was lazy and wasn't doing anything about the fire nation spies, therefore he's a bad King. - If you blow up Bumi you are less likely to get caught because Bumi's bodyguards will be dead too. - Azula is definitely overqualified, the point was to show how manipulative she is, her smiling when people are burning is the most Azula thing ever. - I can't believe that you really think that Ozai respects Zuko, Ozai was clearly just manipulating his children, he is literally using Zuko to make Azula angry. Damn Ozai manipulation goes so hard that it even fooled you into thinking that he actually cares/respects Zuko. Zhao doesn't actually respect Zuko, you'll see that in the last episode when he says that he knows that Ozai is just using him to fuel Azula. Zhao was putting him down in episode 8. -> Iroh is great!

@@de.n30 Don't forget that Zuko is a captain and Zhao is a commander. Zhao has his boat but doesn't give out orders to ship captains, he just coordinates the rendezvous point on land. Once Zhao becomes admiral THEN he can tell captains what to do. Lieutenant Jee is lower than commander. Yet in theory, if not banished, a prince is a prince, his orders are royal.

I'm glad other people enjoyed the combining and changes but this episode and the next are probably my least favorite, personally. I did not really enjoy the combining, it all felt like too much being smashed together at once. It led to characters not really feeling important to me and some of the lessons of the storylines got lost in translation. I feel like someone who didn't watch the original isn't really gonna feel much towards some of these characters, Jett for instance. I didn't feel anything for his betrayal of Katara in this like I did in the original. He kinda felt irrelevant. That's just me though, I'm glad others enjoyed it.

I remember when the trailers dropped that people were upset that Zhao was the one to raid Kyoshi Island (and there was no evidence that Zuko was there in the trailer), because it would "rob" Zuko of a moment of villainy, so people would be less likely to see him as a important threat while they were building up Zhao as the main badguy for book 1. However looking at the first 3 episodes shows that they did something neat. In the first episode, Zuko handedly beats Sokka, which was also in the original cartoon (albeit he didn't use bending in the cartoon). In the second episode he defeats Katara and even gives her traumatic flashbacks of her mother's death before Kyoshi shows up to wreck house. In the third episode, he mostly wins the fight against Aang even though Zuko was not allowed to bend, Aang only manages to escape when Zuko losing his temper sets the Omashu guards upon him. Basically, Zuko won, or was on the verge of winning every 1-1 fight so far against the members of Aang's group. This bodes well for him as a longer-term nemesis, and lets him serve as a measuring stick for when the others pick up new skills and techniques. This helps cement Zuko as a formidable threat to Aang's group, and even gives him the confidence (like it did this episode) to "go after the avatar himself" even though he currently has the support of Zhao.

I actually really liked this episode. The way they combined those 3 storylines(the mechanist, the freedom fighters, and Omashu) works really well. Even though there were stuff taken away(Aang seeing how they ruin the northern temple and Sokka saving the fire nation village form the dam), it’s still pretty good
@cookie_of_nine
@cookie_of_nine 7 ай бұрын
I do feel that the "desecration" of the northern air temple storyline was a big loss overall as it was one of the few things Aang ever gets truly angry about (even surprising himself). Not only was his people destroyed, but the relics and remnants of his culture were carelessly being trashed by people who didn't know or care about their significance. Even though the mechanist story has been changed, they could still incorporate these elements into a future story. Having more mature actors, and/or a better grasp on what works for the show would also be prudent to tell a story like that. My random shot in the dark: Instead of the ember island players putting on a recap episode, they could instead put on a "historically inaccurate" smear piece about the air nation with looted relics that drives Aang over the edge.
@manilafolder283
@manilafolder283 7 ай бұрын

Had Bumi just been himself from the beginning it would have been too much, but having him be somewhat depressed and angry makes him more relatable in relation to all the other characters. There's plenty of time for him to show his true colors in the following seasons.

The Bumi in this adaptation is a man who's lost hope after a century of warfare which fits perfectly with the theme that the return of the Avatar is also the return of hope. I honestly believe we will see Bumi more in line with his animated version come seasons 2 and 3. I understand the trepidation when it comes to beloved characters but I feel too many people are so focused on the fact these characters aren't *starting* their journeys in the same way as the OG show that they are losing sight of the fact that it's where those journeys take them that is more important. Katara is another one ive seen similar comments about but as long as they end the journey in the same place mentally, emotionally, spiritually etc as the cartoon then, in my mind, that is still a faithful adaptation.

This addition at the intro was so necessary. The ending of ATLA is fine for a cartoon, but irl there's absolutely no way after generations of genocide the other nations would all just welcome the fire nation, hold hands and sing Kumbaya. Now though it makes way more sense, that many citizens also feel oppressed and like they're being sacrificed for the firelords unending war, so in a way the "peasants" are also victims.

I think that unlike the cartoon, Zuko's banishment is not public-ish knowledge. In the cartoon Zhao calls Zuko a banished prince to his face, but in this show he welcomes Zuko and Iroh, in his weasely and somewhat sarcastic way, when they show up in his office unnanounced. This would also play into why Zuko isn't so "loud" about his honour, and his "triumphant" return with the avatar. Aside from being a little one-note and cartoony, he has also only ever mentioned these things in private conversations with Iroh. So when he is in public, it's about "dealing with the threats to the fire nation", such as when he's addressing his soldiers in the first episode. This even tracks with some history mentioned by the cartoon, that many of the prospective firelords: Ozai, Azulon, and maybe even Iroh himself had gone on quests to find the Avatar. It's just that in his case Zuko is not allowed to return empty handed, even if only a handful of people know the truth (like Iroh and Azula). Sure if he were to show up in the fire nation empty handed, there are likely orders to "escort" him to the capital, but it's in the Fire lord's best interests that Zuko not officially be banished, since he may either prove himself worthy in some other way (remember in the cartoon he's allowed to return when he "killed" Aang), or it may become necessary to let him return, if (for example) something unfortunate happens to Azula so Ozai needs him as an heir again.

[a little edit scrubbing because I had an odd case of mistaken identity with Azula, lol.] As someone who didn't see the original, I wasn't aware how many different threads they drew together for this and I know it is a little divisive but Im glad to see you reacting so well to it. For me it really worked to setting up a lot of character arcs, but also showing in one episode thendifferent responses different people in the community have to the current state of the world. The Fire Nation rebellion, a similar rebellion, but better organised, from Jet and his crew. The mechanist making hard decisions for his own reasons and so on. A few ofnthese are threads that will continue to get pulled on over the season and its great.

I love your reactions to this series! I will say, don’t worry about Zuko and Iroh’s journey (which will probably require a box of tissues by the time the series ends 😅) and keep an open mind about Bumi. No spoilers, but he’s more “human” feeling, and I believe in a way that fits into the theme of the live action story, but experiences may vary. I like Bumi, but he’s different, and might take some getting used to. And he’s much better in the episode than the random clips. He has a great actor. The next episode is in my top 3 favorites, so I’m looking forward to see your reaction. 😍

I can see what they were trying to do with Bumi, and I could see it making sense, but I almost wish they had tried to stay a little closer? Putting spaces for spoilers (in case anyone stumbles across this later) He doesn’t currently feel like a master of listening and waiting (neutral jing), but more importantly, I feel like here, he’s another adult that feels like he’s putting Aang down and pointing out the harsh nature of his role. Throw in the gemmanite and the duel where he seems..fully willing to kill Aang…I feel like his “think outside the box/airbender views” could’ve been a nice contrast, and played into Aang’s remark about not listening to his teachers here with him listening to Bumi.

Not to mention the voice actors, who did great, had many advantages to these kids. They only had to act with their voices. Definitely hard but that can be done in multiple iterations, multiple takes, and versions, and a skilled editor can splice in the best performances. Not to mention the fact that they had the script in front of them at all times in a small sound booth; no lines to memorize, no blocking to walk through, no martial arts to perform. All done by the animators. So yeah, give these kids a break and a little credit. This is a great big world they are stepping into.... quite literally.

Your reactions are priceless. Having never seen the animated series, I thought the story was woven very well. After completing this series and then immediately completing the animated series, I thought they did a magnificent job of removing less necessary animated parts to make the live action story seamless. Noticeable changes, but like you said, ones that haven't hindered the story at all. Aang set Katara up to be more receptive to positive thought reinforcement with Jet because she was already having positive thoughts about Jet. Zuko still only sees Aang as merely an enemy, and doesn't feel Aang's worthy of any explanations of his actions. I wasn't a fan of the turning point in Zuko's growth in the animated series...I thought it happened too abruptly, but live action Zuko's actor is knocking his role out of the park!

Unrelated to ATLA, bc I'm here for the journey, but you triggered a memory when you mentioned the HP early movies/kid acting, I absolutely don't know if this is what they are doing in ATLA (because the main cast is of a slightly more varied age bracket than the HP trio) - BUT one of the things they did in the Sorcerer’s Stone when filming is having a camera on a close-up or similar angle on Harry, Ron, and Hermione in every scene, so they could easily edit the footage if one of the youngesters accidentally broke character, which happened a lot bless them lmao. I never really noticed it before, but if you happen to rewatch the first movie you can see that a large portion of dialogue-heavy scenes are made up of solo close-ups with the children, whilst the adults are shown in more wider multi-character shots (consider the scene where Snape, McGonagall, and Quirell go to the girls bathroom after the troll attacks; Harry, Ron and Hermione are all close-up shots, whilst the adult characters aren't). It's an ingenious trick in directing when you're working with a large group of young actors.

I wasn't sure about the episode mash-up we get here, but in the end it seems to work. Oddly, some of the things that annoy me most in this adaptation continue to be minor details - like how airbenders (and even some firebenders) can fly, or the tiny wings on Teo's glider (Aang's gets a pass because as an airbender I figure he can manipulate the effectiveness of the glider).

While the re-shuffling of the locations does make some sense, I also feel that something is lost here. The northern air temple provided a great platform for a discussion on progress and preserving culture/tradition. This is lost here. And I feel that many such opportunities to address difficult subjects are lost in this adaptation of the series. Another thing that's lost is the forceful nature of Azula's relationship with her "friends". We don't get to see that here. It's almost like they did this stuff on purpose :/

For me, in terms of this episode alone, I think the Jet/Mechanist bits worked well together (though I do miss the themes of the Northern Air Temple episode). But I think I have a hard time taking it on its own because of how it ends and so episode 3 and 4 feel like a pt 1 and pt 2, and that’s kinda what makes the condensing give a “bloated” feel to me, among other issues. Outside of Zuko ands Iroh’s side of the story, the Omashu arc is probably the lowest point in the season for me. Zuko and Iroh are always a highlight , I could probably watch a series filmed only from their perspective 👀 Minor gripes: - The chute system seemed weird? How was it maintaining its momentum upward like that with nothing seemingly acting on it? Iirc, the chute portion was about going down, and earthbending raised the carts up? - as much as I love a cabbage man bit…I think the camera cutting to looking down on him was weird. If it just lingered on the shot before as he said “my cabbages!!!” I think it would’ve been better. Felt like too…dramatic of a cut?

Kiawentiio is an amazing actor. She was also in "What If...? " (as Wahta) and in a movie called "Beans," as Beans/Tekahentahkhwa. (That last movie is a powerful but tough watch...) The woman who played her mom in that movie is also playing her mom in this series (Rainbow Dickerson). I am watching this with a nearly blank slate, so that I am not too biased (looking at you, movie version) for a re-imagining. I think the writers are really good at weaving in elements of the animated version, but also making their own story. And that may mean that events happen differently or even in a different order. I am ok with that as long as it is a good story! And so far, for me it is! Enjoying your commentary and reactions and looking forward to the next episode!

I am a fan of the original, and I am genuinely loving this adaptation. I'm glad they're not doing a one for one retelling, and adding new stuff. Seriously, what would be the point of doing everything the same? Spoilers for those who haven't watched the original: They seem to be leaving out the love interest between Aang and Katara, and I'm fine with it. I mean, how many 14 year old girls would look at a 12 year old boy and be like, yeah, I'd hit that. I'm fine with them ending up together when they grow up, but it's not realistic for kids of that age to be romantically involved (perhaps the younger having a crush, but the older girl being attracted to a boy 2 years younger than her is not realistic at all). At first I had mixed feelings about the live action Bumi, but with each watch he's growing on me. And yeah, Cabbage Guy and Melon Lord are the true main characters of Avatar.

I personally DO have a problem with the way they combined these stories. I get that to a degree it may have been somewhat necessary, but it makes the world feel a lot smaller to essentially have 3-4 storylines take place in just one city. Not to mention that it deprives us of the best moments in those episodes: Aang getting angry that the Northern Air temple and some of the sacred sites within have been defaced and Sokka managing to save the town, because of his kindness to the firenation elder. It's a brilliant message and neither of those have made it in the show. Of course we still get Jet being a terrorist, but some of the impact is taken away for me. Not to mention that it's one of THE most important, memorable Sokka moments in season 1. It does so much for his development as a warrior and leader. Another thing that gets lost of course is the Northern Air temple as a location. And this may seem insignificant to some, but it's actually rather important. In the og animated series Aang travels to each and every Air temple. This is important, because the Gaang (but more specifically Aang) literally have to visit every nation in order to become whole. As uncle iroh said "when you take your knowledge from only one source, it becomes rigid and stale." By omitting the Northern Air temple, a crucial part of that coming of age by travel is missing. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that you enjoyed this episode and I still partially enjoyed it myself. The idea of showing a resistance movement within the fire nation for example was quite inspired. I just think that episode 3 and 4 are by far the weakest of the series.
