This goes to show the struggle Zukos been through his entire life. He's had a abusive father, bully sister,loving but banished mother, loving caring Uncle. And it seems that everyone in Zukos life who cares for him,the enemy always wants to do away with them to keep Zuko Alone. For example iroh or Zukos mom.they cared for him. Tho Zukos felt alone his entire life,all he wants is something that he'll never receive. And thats love from his Father. Being with that family makes him think and pounder. This is why Zuko feels alone. But he's not alone because Iroh has always and will always be there for him whenever he needs him. He's been a better father than Ozai ever was.

The Fire Nation don't want Zuko and the people of the Earth Kingdom don't want Zuko... He was truly alone in the end. This was a fantastic character episode for Zuko as well as another episode in showing us yet again how war and loss has affected everyone. We saw it with Iroh when he lost his son, with Zuko and Azula growing up, and with these townspeople who still felt prejudice and hatred towards Zuko despite his good deed. Overall, this was one of the best episodes of the series and that's saying a lot.

It really was one of my favourites. Episodes like this for me at least are when you truly start seeing the tone shift of what once may look like a kids show but has so many underlying themes that make the show as great as it was. Zuko's character is one of the most developed characters I've seen in a show and how he goes through his struggles and the way it"s presented is a masterpiece that i hope many get to enjoy.

One act of kindness doesn't undo 100 years of war and suffering that thwFjre Nation started and has maintained for the last century. Zuko naming himself as the prince essentially branded him as a symbol of the tyrrany his family has started, giving the townspeople someone to personally blame for all of the losses they've had. This was a very good episode for Zuko's development because he needed to understand what it's like on the other side, actually experiencing the suffering that his country is inflicting upon the other nations. In Book 1, he never interacted with any non Fire Nation people on a personal level, and this is the first time he's really seeing how this war isn't just affecting his family.

Their father wanted weapons, not kids. Azula, due to her status as a prodigy, was able to hide the human side better and just play the role of a weapon, so he favored her. And think about it, in a society that still clearly has patriarchal values it tried to force on her (emphasized in her childhood through iroh giving her the doll when he has met her and has no reason to think that girl would want a fashion doll over a weapon). Her mother appeared to love Zuko more, the culture around her looked to the men to lead & fight which was the only thing she's good at (see "the beach" for proof), meanwhile her father was giving her praise and favor. He was the only one who was at the time. She latched on and based her entire sense of self onto becoming the weapon her father wanted her to be, suppressing her human side more and more to fit that mold. Zuko had it really bad and Azula is a bully, I would never say otherwise, but people tend to forget she's literally just 14 during the present time of this show. Zuko is only 16. All of them are just kids. in this ep, Azula was even younger and being raised by a power hungry sociopath.
@neonoires5 жыл бұрын
I got a sense that Zuko wasn’t really a villain back in season 1 when we met Admiral Zhao but this episode really shows more of the family dynamic. I don’t think Ursa favored Zuko more than Azula but he was just an easier child to deal with. I also think with that being said, Ozai didn’t exactly love Azula more I think he noticed her strength which is more important to him. He saw Zuko as weaker while Azula was always a prodigy. Since Zuko was kind of pushed aside by his father, he was closer to his mom.

Hey! My bae Zuzu! His father is cruel and I’m pretty sure he hates Zuko because Zuko takes after his mother who is a kind loving woman. His sister is the devil like her father, so he doesn’t dislike her. I’m pretty sure that man isn’t capable of loving anyone, not even Azula.
@dariensampson79135 жыл бұрын
The sad truth is that they are both a result of bad parenting on both parts. Ursa favored Zuko and rejected Azula, while Ozai rejected Zuko and favored Azula. Their personalities come about because of this favoritism not the other way around. Also Ursa was no pleasant rose. The war had taken it's toll on everyone and even kind people like Iroh were twisted by the ideology that was being pushed. It is only when they lost what they loved to the war that they reexamined themselves.
@Midnight79705 жыл бұрын
She only paid that much attention to Zuko because of how both Azula and his father treated him. Everyone but uncle and the mom treated Zuko like he was less than, so of course the mom was going to give him more attention. @@Midnight7970 You only seem to empathize with Zuko because of the story your told. We know in the end he was looking for love his father would never give. But he always had hope. Azula just wanted her mother to care about her too but when her mom disappeared she lost hope of ever getting it. She was a devil because of her upbringing. It was who she needed to be to survive her fathers parenting since she didn't get anything positive from her mother. That does not excuse her behavior but it explains a lot about why she hated Zuko so much. He had what she never got, her mothers love.

all from this episode so im not really spoiling Ozai ask his father for irohs birthright --> the father gets offended and yells at ozai for his lack of sympathy for someone who's lost a son ---> azula prances around proclaiming that zuko(ozai's son), is gonna die ---> mom gets concerned--> mom disappears mysteriously in middle of the night, the same night the grandfather dies --> the grandfather, who was fiercely against the idea of ozai becoming firelord not too long ago, somehow, in his dying breath, grants ozai's wish out of the blue..... Connect the dots.
@Laxhoop5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they never state it in the show, but Ozai is worse than you think. You see, Ozai wanted to be fire lord, but his father would never normally allow it, since Iroh was supposed to be next in line. So Ozai decided that the loss of a family member would help him gain sympathy, and ensure he would get the throne, especially after Iroh lost against the Earth Kingdom. So Ozai decided he would have Zuko killed, and fein sadness over this loss. And Azula overheard him tell his assassins this plan. Yes, she literally heard her father plan to kill her brother, and her first thought was to go tease him over it. Anyways, Azula told their Mom about this after she dragged her out of Zuko’s room, and she confronted Ozai. Ozai simply gave her an ultimatum. Either she leaves the fire nation, allowing him to fake her death to use for sympathy, or Zuko dies. So she went to tell Zuko goodbye, and left forever. The show was never able to directly reference this, as Nickelodeon told the people behind the show that it was too dark for prime time, so they told all of this in a comic.

It seemed like Firelord Azulon ordered it bc Ozai must feel the same feeling of "losing his firstborn son" like Iroh lost Lu-ten. Ozai never felt loss hence why he kinda - ya know. So she struck a deal with ozai, she would kill the firelord allowing ozai to take the throne and Ozai would spare their son and allow her to leave with him. Ozai went to Azulon which is his father and told him he wanted to be the fire lord. Azulon didn't want to betray Iroh, since Iroh was suppose to be firelord. As punishment, Azulon said that Ozai should know how Iroh feels like after losing his son so Azulon said that Ozai should kill Zuko. According to people who have read the comics, they said that the comics reveal that Zuko's mom name Ursa, left Zuko once she gave Ozai the poison to kill Azulon. She never would have wanted Zuko to die. Then, after she gave Ozai the poison to use on Azulon, Ozai banish Ursa because he was afraid that she would use the poison on him. I think she wanted to take Zuko and I think Azula with her but Ozai said that the kids had to stay with him.

Ok. So how I understand it and based on my own theory (haven't yet confirmed it yet). Iroh wasn't firelord because at the time, he lost his son and in turn abdicated his claim to the throne and with Ozai being his power-hungry self, tried to convince Azulon (the granfather) that he should take the throne. I think what Azula taunted was actually true, Ozai really was going to kill him which leads to my theory, confirmed or not, Ursa actually killed Azulon so Ozai could be firelord and in turn wouldn't have to kill Zuko. This was one of my favorite episodes, it really changed my perspective on Zuko. There's more on Zuko and his past coming, those are the best episodes and I can't wait!

I understand they didn't like him and wanted him to leave after. I just hate how they spat at him and tossed him away the way they did. It's sad but also realistic in a way. There's also the fact that for these people, war and suffering is all they've known since the war is still ongoing. This of course would realistically factor in how they treat Zuko here, which again is sad but realistic.
