This episode about Ba Sing Se and GoT have taught me to manage expectations as things may not always be what they seem. Imagine Ba Sing Se being raised up since season 1 on such a pedestal as a beacon of freedom and refuge against the tyranny of the Fire Nation only to realize that was built on lies and propaganda.

I wouldn't say that Jet's motive was just revenge here. Imagine if, instead of Zuko and Iroh, it was two random firebenders you had never seen before. It's easy to take Zuko and Iroh's side when you know their story, but to Jet they're just two firebenders that've infiltrated the last safe bastion of the Earth Kingdom, and he's the only one who knows it. He definitely acted too rash, but it's not like when he attacked that old man who just happened to be Fire Nation, or tried to drown an entire village just to kill all the soldiers there. This time there was genuine reason to be concerned.

Chilling episode, especially the end. I think it's fine to be frustrated at Aang, but as you say, recognising it's an important part of his personality. Great work!. This was one of the episodes I'd been looking forward to the most :) Regarding Aang's pacifism, I agree mostly agree with you. One thing to bear in mind: those philosophies are all he has left of his people, which might explain why he clings to them so closely. Through him and his adherence to their traditions, they live on. - As Toph pointed out in S2E9, Aang's preference for evasion and going around problems (rather than through them) is a personal flaw he needs to overcome (and a hindrance to learning a style as rough and direct as Earthbending). - Bumi said mockingly in their "fight" in S1E5 that avoiding and evading is a "typical Airbender tactic". - All the nations have flaws in their approaches and bending styles if you watch closely. Iroh also alludes to the characteristics of each nation when he teaches Zuko in S2E9. For every positive characteristic he pointed out, there's a corresponding negative characteristic. * People of the Fire Nation = desire, energy, drive and will. These, left unchecked, can lead to aggression, violence and imperialism. * People of the Earth Kingdom = diverse, strong, persistent, enduring. But they lack unity (being divided into several city states unlike the single centralised monarchy the Fire Nation has) and, though strong, are very rigid in their traditions and social systems, failing to adapt to changing circumstances (as you saw in this episode). * People of the Air Nomads = detached from worldly concerns, peaceful, free... but they were conversely inattentive, naive and scatterbrained (qualities Aang demonstrates early on) ... perhaps if they'd played closer attention to the world's politics sooner, the Fire Nation might not have been able to steal a march on them and wipe them out by ambush. Food for thought :)

I don't know why the concept of a non hybrid animal is wierd to them. Nearly every bird, bug & fish is a non hybrid. Most cats & dogs are not hybrids. Many reptiles & amphibians are not hybrids. "Why would they keep the earthking and not this strong figure?" ever been to a monarchy in modern day? The queen was beloved by her people. Kings ending up as stupid/useless figure heads with no actual power is something that's happened several times in Chinese history. I like the parallel here with Chinese history given how the earth kingdom is actually based off of 2 different Chinese dynasties.

Love this episode. Continue to be here for your honest reactions to the show & especially your genuine enthusiasm while watching. Don't worry, it is clear that you understand that Aang, while being extremely powerful, is not a warrior at heart. It has been and will be a conflict that helps drive the drama in the plot. I just love how no one would predict the Ba Sing Se arc to involve mind control and the state's censorship of ideas. And the Iroh/Zuko interaction in book two is so good. Some of the upcoming episodes in this arc are my favorites.

@@driezzy well totalitarianism is an aspect of fascism since fascism is inherently authoritarian so it can be used interchangeably in this context I guess
@ericfalley Жыл бұрын
Yeah, totalitarianism probably describes the situation at Ba Sing Se better, but the terms do often get mixed up. From my understanding, fascism usually involves some level of patriotic nationalism with a sense that they as a people are destined for greatness if they only remain true and pure to their country's original values. Authoritarianism usually arises out of a drive to enforce these values and filter out those who don't truly represent their nation.

If Aang changes the way he is, the the airbenders’ culture is gone forever
@TimberlakeTigerGirl8 ай бұрын
I call bs: it'll only die if he dies without living long enough to produce an Airbender child. He's the Avatar; he can't just adhere to his birth culture and philosophy. Him unwilling to do what he needs to do, regardless of how he feels about it, nearly got him killed at least twice. As both the Avatar and the last of your kind, if you are dealing with someone as evil as Ozai and you've exerted every other avenue to stop them without killing and it fails. Can you honestly say that feeling like preserving your practically dead culture is more important than doing what is necessary (killing the bad guy)? Saving millions of innocent lives, saving the world and other cultures from suffering a similar fate? If it weren't for that energy bending cop out, killing Ozai was literally his only option to stop the war. Fact is that men who are willing to commit genocide with no remorse or hesitation cannot be reasoned with. And they are too dangerous to be kept alive.

There’s nothing like watching Spartan and Pudgy coming to the slow realization that Avatar is a pretty messed up kids show. Still very good, but a little messed up for a kids show. P.S. In think the correct political term for Ba Sing Se is a “bureaucracy”. It basically means a multi-layered government structure that is ruled by state officials, involves the separation of social classes and uses a number of rules and procedures to regulate everything from its economy, to it’s local environment, and even what kind of media or propaganda is fed to the public.
