This episode is what made Zuko as one of my favourite characters in any media. The way it shows that Zuko isn't a bad guy but is trying to be good and made a few mistakes along the way is amazing. The ending is heartbreaking and it conveys everything great about Avatar The Last Airbender in one episode.

Notice that Zuko used to be pretty muscular and from now on he is going to be considerably smaller. That's because he lost a significant amount of muscle mass due to starvation. This show is pretty good at this sort of attention to detail.

Imagine you're a child, your brother may be dead from war, and the person who's family is responsible for the war just revealed himself in front of you. You can see why a child might be mad, even if that person helped you.

Her father praised azula for her fire bending so she mostly spent time with him. Zukos mom sympathized for zuko for not meeting his father’s standards so she spent more time with him. And azula became jealous. Because she spent so much time with her dad she talked like him. And when her mom left she was hurt because she thought she was the reason and that her mom thought she was a monster. A lot of people think that because azula is a prodigy and perfectionist her flames are blue. However another word for a perfectionist is a master. And the avatar is a master as well and prodigy when it comes to bending. And yet not one of the avatars in the past fire turn blue. She’s definitely skilled with the moves she uses when it comes to fire bending. Her bending was orange as a kid and had turned blue when her mom left and she was left in the toxic relationship of her father. Her blue flames could do more with the fact she has a drive to make everyone obey her so that don’t leave. We see more of her mental issues later in the series. It’s possible I’m wrong because we’ve never seen a fire bender with blue flames before. However we also have never seen another fire bender in the avatar universe with mental issues like azula’s.

I mean, imagine if you were a jewish boy during WWII and a similar scenario to this scene happened, but once the dust settled, you could see your savior had been hiding an SS uniform. would you be grateful or terrified? Also I think the mother killed Azulon to save Zuko which is why she left.

Exactly! It's not even just wearing an SS uniform, it's like the person PROUDLY announcing to them, "I'm the son and heir of Hitler". Would you seriously feel grateful to someone proudly announcing, "I'm the son and heir of the guy who is invading your country, got your brother killed and probably got your dad killed as well." Also, many people think the ending is a moment of growth for Zuko (the episode itself is but the ending is not). When his mother tells him not to forgot who he is, she doesn't mean "don't forget that you're the Fire Nation prince, son of the Firelord, and heir to the throne". Those are actually the superficial titles he's been obsessed with since the beginning of the show (seriously, since episode 1). What Ursa really means is don't forget who you are on the inside: a good person. Zuko's actions in this episode do show some character growth but his announcement at the end show that at this stage in his character development, he still lacks the insight for long term change.

@@solonec.4285That’s the true tragedy of the “never forget who you are” scene. His mom is literally spelling it out for him that his royal title says absolutely nothing about who he is, it’s his humanity and kind hearted nature that most often wins out in the struggle between his two sides, that makes him who he is. As much as Zuko is preoccupied with his title, status and birthright in the Fire Nation, he at this point just doesn’t understand that because he does have a soft nature and a conscience, unlike his father and sister he really doesn’t have what it takes to be a war time firelord. She is asking him to try to understand himself deep within, but he is interpreting it as what he is on a superficial level. Tragic indeed.

It’s funny we never really got a real conclusion to who’d win in a fight between the two. They’ve fought 1 v 1 three times if I remember correctly but neither one of them got a decisive victory over the other.

@@JonJayAllDay On their first fight Azula was about to execute Zuko with lightning so she'd have won On their next fight it was Azula vs Zuko vs Aang, and Azula just straight up ignored Zuko the entire time Spoiler alert for the next 1v1s On the sourthern riders it ended up in a draw, as the two were blasted away off the airship On the finale Zuko had won, and would've finished the fight if he didnt taunt her to use lightning

There are some things that I think get glided over. Ozai is a monster. Azulon, his father and Fire Lord, know this. Plus, Azulon loves his eldest son, Iroh, and grandson, Lu Ten. Ordering Zuko's death served many purposes. It shows the level of loyalty Ozai possesses. It all but ruins the chance of Ozai's offspring from becoming Fire Lord someday. It tears that family apart.

I always assumed Zuko meant to kick or even use his hands to knock off the apple, but realized too late he didn't have the coordination to do so, so ended up falling into her.
