Generation Kill, while not made by the same production company, is also an HBO production and absolutely worth a watch. It’s a true story based off a Rolling Stones reporter’s experience while he was imbedded with a US marines unit during the opening stages of the Iraq War.

I third this! While not as starry-eyed as the WW2-era movies, Gen Kill is an excellent war series. Being about a modern ongoing war makes it more relevant to today and I personally love the cynicism and moral ambiguity it forces us to confront.

In my opinion Eugene Sledge has written the best war memoir I have ever read. The way he describes the situation and how vivid he gets I couldn’t comprehend it. I first tried reading it at 13 after watching the show the first time and I had to set it down my young mind didn’t understand the brutality. Years later I picked it back up and read it in a 2 hour block period instead of doing my math work lol. This book let me understand my grandfather who fought from the age of 17 on Guadalcanal to 20 on Okinawa then 25/26 for Korea after being called back and landing at Inchon and being wounded at chosin reservoir then being in his mid 40s for Vietnam fighting in Hue.

Eugene breaking down and his father there to console him is the most heart-wrenching yet beautiful scene from a war series that I've witnessed. It hurts so sharply, but his father's love and consolation feels like a warm blanket in an ice storm. Edit: I highly recommend Eugene's book 'With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa'. A good bit of the series is based on it as well as Bob Leckie's 'Helmet for My Pillow'.

Leckie also wrote a very good book on the America Revolution called George Washington's War.

In real life, what happened was Eugene's father found him on the ground, weeping, after having killed a dove. Eugene said he could no longer tolerate seeing any suffering. His father then suggested instead of shooting birds, he could instead take on bird watching as a hobby. It started as a hobby, but he was so passionate about it he went on to study ornithology and became a big name in his field.

I saw an interview with Sidney Phillips telling a story about his Australian girlfriend. In reality her name was Shirley and their relationship in the Melbourne episode was strictly platonic. Shirley eventually married an RAF pilot and had several children. Sometime after the war she and her family made a trip to the US and visited Mobile. Sid got a call from his wife at his medical practice telling him that Shirley was at their home. He was a little confused and said who? To which she responded, you know.... Shirley. Well as it turned out on that visit, Shirley's son and Sid's daughter fell in love and were married. So Sid and Shirley ended up sharing grandchildren after all.

Henry Sledge, Eugene’s son, remembers while he was growing up, Snafu would come over to Sledges house and smoke cigarettes in the kitchen, to talk about the war. He’s recently re-watching the pacific, and was a large reason why this show was so good. Sledge struggled immensely after the war. With the help of his father, he went to school for biology, and his life passion became birds and science. But he never, ever forgot what he saw. There are several good interviews of Gene on KZbin from the 80s-90s.

The Pacific was based on memoirs of Eugene Sledge and Robert Leckie among others: "With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa": By Eugene Sledge, this memoir covers the later part of the war, from 1944 to 1945 "Helmet for My Pillow: From Parris Island to the Pacific": By Robert Leckie, this memoir covers the early part of the war "China Marine: An Infantryman's Life after World War II": By Eugene Sledge "Red Blood, Black Sand: with John Basilone on Iwo Jima": By Chuck Tatum, a Marine who fought alongside John Basilone at Iwo Jima "You'll Be Sor-ree!: A Guadalcanal Marine Remembers the Pacific War": By Sidney Phillips, a friend of Sledge "Islands of the Damned": By Romus V. Burgin, a squad leader for Sledge's mortar team. God bless them all.

Eugene sledge has a speech he gives on KZbin called “With the Old Breed and the Cost of War” it’s 36ish minutes I think and he goes in grave detail on how they personally felt the emotions on the battlefield and the idea of killing. The filth on the battlefield and at the end he gives some remarks on the men and what that cost truly was. Highly suggest listening to it when working out or when you’re free to. The tone of BoB is different because, although the experiences of individuals are highlighted, it is always in the context of the group, in this case Easy Company. The Pacific lacks that same unifying thread, instead giving you the impressions of individuals. The isolation produced is more harrowing and personal and there's no mutual social support. That helps make "The Pacific" darker and claustrophobic. Good job making it through the series. I have watched a few reactors bail out because it was too much for them.

The celebration by the soldiers was because they knew that the invasion of Japan was not in their future. As hard as the Japanese fought for Pelelieu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa imagine how hard the fighting would have been in an invasion of Japan. The military estimated over 1 million casualties. Millions of Japanese civilians would have certainly died of statvation, which killed more civilians than any bombs. There are many today that say it was wrong for the U.S. to drop the nuclear bombs on Japan. This is why series like THE PACIFIC, BAND OF BROTHERS, and MASTERS OF THE AIR plus accurate movies of all wars is so important.🤔 While it may be hard for us to watch it's infinitely harder for them to fight. God Bless all those who fight for our freedom.❤❤❤❤❤

I recommend The Best Years of Our Lives, which won Best Picture for its depiction of post war struggles for veterans. Alcoholism, PTSD, marital woes, unemployment, disability, etc. were all given attention so the American public can see what these men went through and what they faced coming home. Poignant, funny, sorrowful, thoughtful, yet ending with a note of hopefulness, it's well worth the watch with brilliant performances by the cast. William Wyler, the director, was a veteran himself and he wanted to bring awareness to the plight of veterans. It is probably the first film ever made that really brings home the postwar issues faced by returning servicemen. One of my favorite films of all time.

So glad you guys loved this series. A lot of people found it too disjointed compared to BOB because it used two books as source material compared to the one book used in the other series. But imo the characters in this series went through a much greater and profound arc and I think it showed how the war changed people better than BOB did. BOB was about camaraderie whereas this series was about the effects of war and combat on the individual. Please consider The Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind as a feature film to react to. It is a perfect screenplay and an amazing movie.

2:44 troops will be dismissed to return home, but a great number will be retained for occupation duties. Japan surrendered and the fighting stopped, but that also means that all the territories where the war was fought are in utter disarray. Troops were stationed there, especially in Japan to keep order and fight civilian resistance groups until stable governments were set up. Sledge served for a time in China. There is also the issue of Japanese holdovers, small groups and even singular soldiers who didn't believe Japan surrendered and kept fighting years after the war.

Thought I mention because you two are Aussies the scene where Eugene Sledge is speaking with the girl at the college, she's Michelle Williams the mum of Matilda Ledger Heath Ledger's daughter. You should watch Master of the Sky which is based on USAA Eighth Air Force flying over Europe, one startling fact is that the Eighth Air Force lost more men what the entire USMC lost in the Pacific but the one difference was the Marines lost their men filth, misery on disease infested brutal conditions whereas the Air Groups lived on bases in a lot better condition before each of their combat missions took place. Each bomber had a ten-man crew along with one man fighter escort pilots, so every time a bomber went down 10 men were at risk of death.
